What Is Surah Al-Mulk?
Surah Al-Mulk (The Sovereignty) is the 67th chapter of the Quran and the first surah of the 29th Juz. It is a Makkan surah of 30 verses, also known as Tabarak after its opening word. Its message is simple and powerful: all dominion belongs to Allah, and this life is a test.
"Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion, and He is over all things competent. [He] who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed." (Surah Al-Mulk 67:1–2)
Because of its virtues, millions of Muslims recite Surah Al-Mulk every night. Below are the benefits that come from authentic narrations, with their references and gradings, so you know exactly what is established.
1. It Intercedes for Its Reader Until They Are Forgiven
The Prophet ﷺ said: > "There is a surah in the Quran of thirty verses which interceded for a man until he was forgiven: Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-mulk." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2891; Sunan Abi Dawud 1400 — graded hasan)
A surah that pleads for its companion is a reason to make it a lifelong habit, not an occasional reading.
2. Protection From the Punishment of the Grave
The Companion Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) said: > "Whoever recites Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-mulk every night, Allah will protect him by it from the punishment of the grave. In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to call it al-Mani'ah (the protector)." (Sunan an-Nasa'i al-Kubra — graded hasan by al-Albani)
This is why the surah is known as al-Mani'ah — and why the words "every night" matter: the protection is tied to making it a regular practice.
3. It Was the Prophet's ﷺ Bedtime Sunnah
Jabir (RA) reported: > "The Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited Alif-Lam-Mim Tanzil (As-Sajdah) and Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-mulk (Al-Mulk)." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2892 — graded sahih by al-Albani)
Reading Surah Al-Mulk at night therefore follows the Prophet's ﷺ own routine. Many people also add Surah As-Sajdah to complete this Sunnah.
4. A Nightly Reminder of What Matters
Beyond the reward, the meaning of Surah Al-Mulk shapes the heart. Each night it reminds you that:
- Allah alone holds all sovereignty and power.
- Life and death are a test of who is best in deed, not who has the most.
- The perfection of the heavens and the earth points to their Creator.
- Every person will be asked about how they responded to the truth.
Ending the day with these reminders helps you reflect on your actions and begin the next day with better intentions.
A Note on Weak Narrations
Some popular statements about Surah Al-Mulk circulate without reliable chains, and scholars have graded certain narrations about it as weak. The three benefits above come from narrations graded sahih or hasan by hadith scholars, which is why we have focused on them. It is always best to share virtues with their source.
How to Make Surah Mulk a Nightly Habit
