Introduction to Fajr Prayer

Fajr is the first of the five daily obligatory prayers in Islam. Praying Fajr on time establishes spiritual discipline and places the believer under Allah's divine protection throughout the entire day.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: > "Whoever prays the Fajr prayer is under the protection of Allah." (Sahih Muslim 657)

How Many Rakats are in Fajr?

Fajr prayer consists of 4 rakats in total:

  1. 2 Rakats Sunnah Mu'akkadah: Performed first. This Sunnah was never abandoned by the Prophet ﷺ, even while traveling.
  2. 2 Rakats Farz (Obligatory): Performed second. Recited aloud (Jahri) when leading or in congregation.

Step-by-Step Method to Pray Fajr

Step 1: Perform Wudu (Ablution) and Face the Qibla Ensure you have valid ritual purification (Wudu), clean clothes, and face the Kaaba in Makkah. You can find your exact Qibla direction on our Namaz Timings Page.

Step 2: Make the Intention (Niyyah) Formulate the intention in your heart to pray the 2 Rakats of Sunnah of Fajr (or Farz of Fajr) for the sake of Allah alone.

Step 3: Takbiratul Ihram Raise your hands to your earlobes (or shoulder level) and say: > Allahu Akbar (الله أكبر) — Allah is the Greatest. Fold your right hand over your left hand across your chest or below the navel.

Step 4: Recite Thana and Surah Al-Fatihah - Recite the opening supplication: Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdika... - Seek refuge: A'oodhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajeem. - Recite Surah Al-Fatihah attentively: Bismillahi-r-Rahmani-r-Raheem. Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil 'alameen... - Say Ameen.

Step 5: Recite an Additional Surah Recite any short Surah from the Quran, such as Surah Al-Kafirun or Surah Al-Ikhlas for the Sunnah.

Step 6: Ruku (Bowing) Say Allahu Akbar and bow forward with hands placed on your knees and back straight. Recite three times: > Subhana Rabbiyal 'Azeem (سبحان ربي العظيم) — Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent.

Rise from Ruku saying: > Sami' Allāhu liman hamidah, Rabbanā wa lakal-hamd.

Step 7: Sujud (Prostration) Say Allahu Akbar and prostrate on the ground with seven points touching the floor (forehead, nose, two palms, two knees, and toes). Recite three times: > Subhana Rabbiyal A'la (سبحان ربي الأعلى) — Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.

Rise to a sitting position saying Allahu Akbar, pause briefly, then perform the second Sujud identically.

Step 8: Stand for the Second Rakat Stand up saying Allahu Akbar and repeat the sequence: Surah Al-Fatihah, an additional Surah (e.g., Surah Al-Falaq or Surah An-Nas), Ruku, and two Sujuds.

Step 9: Tashahhud and Durood Ibrahim After the second Sujud, remain sitting on your left foot with the right foot upright. Recite: - At-Tahiyyat: At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat... - Durood Ibrahim: Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala aali Muhammad... - Rabbana Du'a: Rabbana aatina fid-dunya hasanatan...

Step 10: Tasleem (Ending the Prayer) Turn your head to the right shoulder and say: > Assalamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah (السلام عليكم ورحمة الله) Then turn your head to the left shoulder and repeat the same greeting.

What to Do After Fajr Remain seated and recite: - Astaghfirullah (3 times) - Ayatul Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255) - SubhanAllah (33x), Alhamdulillah (33x), Allahu Akbar (34x)
