Surah Al-Mulk is one of the most loved and most recited chapters of the Holy Quran. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ made a habit of reciting it every night before sleeping, and encouraged his companions to do the same. But why is this short surah of just 30 verses so important, and what are the benefits of reading Surah Mulk every night? Here is what the authentic sources tell us.

1. Protection from the punishment of the grave

The most well-known benefit of Surah Al-Mulk is that it protects the reader from the punishment of the grave. In a narration, it is described as the surah that defends and pleads for the one who recites it. For this reason it is sometimes called 'Al-Mani'ah' (the preventer) and 'Al-Munjiyah' (the saviour), because it saves its reader from the torment of the grave by Allah's permission.

"Whoever recites Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-mulk every night, Allah will protect him by it from the punishment of the grave. In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to call it al-Mani'ah." (Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA), Sunan an-Nasa'i al-Kubra — graded hasan by al-Albani)

2. It intercedes until the reader is forgiven

Another narration tells us that Surah Al-Mulk is a surah of thirty verses that will intercede for its companion until they are forgiven. This shows the great status of these verses and the mercy Allah has placed in regularly reciting them with understanding.

"There is a surah in the Quran of thirty verses which interceded for a man until he was forgiven: Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-mulk." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2891; Sunan Abi Dawud 1400 — graded hasan)

3. Following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ

Simply by reading Surah Al-Mulk every night, a Muslim is reviving a beloved Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, who would not sleep until he had recited it. Reviving a Sunnah carries its own reward, and turns an ordinary nightly routine into an act of worship.

"The Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited Alif-Lam-Mim Tanzil (As-Sajdah) and Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-mulk." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2892 — graded sahih by al-Albani)

4. A nightly reminder of Allah's power and the Hereafter

Beyond the reward, Surah Al-Mulk is deeply meaningful. It opens by glorifying Allah, in whose hand is all sovereignty, and reminds us that life and death are a test to see who is best in deeds. Reading it each night keeps the reality of the Hereafter fresh in the heart, which is why reading it with understanding — not just the words — brings its full benefit.
