4:15
وَٱ لَّـٰ تِى
And those who
يَأۡتِينَ
commit
[the] immorality
مِن
from
your women
فَٱ سۡتَشۡهِدُواۡ
then call to witness
عَلَيۡهِنّ َ
against them
أَرۡبَعَةً
four
among you
فَإِن
And if
they testify
فَأَمۡسِكُوهُنّ َ
then confine them
فِى
in
their houses
حَتَّىٰ
until
يَتَوَفَّـٰ هُنّ َ
comes to them
[the] death
أَوۡ
or
يَجۡ عَلَ
makes
Allah
لَهُنّ َ
for them
سَبِيلاً
١٥a way
Those who commit immorality [i.e., unlawful sexual intercourse] of your women - bring against them four [witnesses] from among you. And if they testify,1 confine them [i.e., the guilty women] to houses until death takes them or Allāh ordains for them [another] way.2
4:16
وَٱ لَّذَانِ
And the two who
يَأۡتِيَـٰ نِهَا
commit it
مِنك ُمۡ
among you
فَـَٔـاذُوهُمَاۖ
then punish both of them
فَإِن
But if
they repent
وَأَصۡلَحَا
and correct themselves
فَأَعۡرِضُواۡ
then turn away
عَنۡهُمَآۗ
from both of them
إِنّ َ
Indeed
Allah
كَانَ
is
تَوَّابًا
Oft-Forgiving
Most-Merciful
And the two1 who commit it [i.e., unlawful sexual intercourse] among you - punish [i.e., dishonor] them both. But if they repent and correct themselves, leave them alone. Indeed, Allāh is ever Accepting of Repentance and Merciful.
4:17
إِنّ َمَا
Only
the acceptance of repentance
عَلَى
by
Allah
لِلَّذِينَ
(is) for those who
يَعۡمَلُونَ
do
the evil
بِجَهَـٰ لَةٍ
in ignorance
then
يَتُوبُونَ
they repent
مِن
from
soon after
Then those
يَتُوبُ
will have forgiveness
(from) Allah
عَلَيۡهِمۡۗ
upon them
وَكَانَ
and is
Allah
عَلِيمًا
All-Knowing
حَكِيمًا
١٧All-Wise
The repentance accepted by Allāh is only for those who do wrong in ignorance [or carelessness] and then repent soon [after].1 It is those to whom Allāh will turn in forgiveness, and Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
4:18
وَلَيۡسَتِ
And not
(is) the acceptance of repentance
لِلَّذِينَ
for those who
يَعۡمَلُونَ
do
the evil deeds
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
إِذَا
when
حَضَرَ
approaches
أَحَدَهُمُ
one of them
[the] death
قَالَ
he says
إِنّ ِى
Indeed I
تُبۡ تُ
repent
now
وَلَا
and not
those who
يَمُوتُونَ
die
وَهُمۡ
while they
كُفَّارٌۚ
(are) disbelievers
أُوۡ لَـٰٓ ئِكَ
Those
أَعۡتَدۡ نَا
We have prepared
لَهُمۡ
for them
عَذَابًا
a punishment
أَلِيمًا
١٨painful
But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "Indeed, I have repented now," or of those who die while they are disbelievers. For them We have prepared a painful punishment.
4:19
يَـٰٓ أَيُّهَا
O you
who
ءَامَنُواۡ
believe[d]
لَا
Not
يَحِلُّ
(is) lawful
لَكُمۡ
for you
أَن
that
you inherit
the women
كَرۡهًاۖ
(by) force
And not
تَعۡضُلُوهُنّ َ

لِتَذۡهَبُواۡ
so that you may take
بِبَعۡضِ

مَآ
(of) what
ءَاتَيۡتُمُوهُنّ َ
you have given them
إِلَّآ
except
أَن
that
they commit
بِفَـٰ حِشَةٍ
immorality
open
And live with them
بِٱ لۡمَعۡرُوفِۚ
in kindness
فَإِن
But if
you dislike them
فَعَسَىٰٓ
then perhaps
أَن
that
you dislike

a thing
and has placed
Allah
فِيهِ
in it
خَيۡرًا

much
O you who have believed, it is not lawful for you to inherit women by compulsion.1 And do not make difficulties for them in order to take [back] part of what you gave them2 unless they commit a clear immorality [i.e., adultery]. And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allāh makes therein much good.
4:20
وَإِنۡ
And if

أَتَأۡخُذُونَهُۥ
Would you take it
بُهۡتَـٰ نًا
(by) slander
and a sin
open
But if you want to replace one wife with another and you have given one of them a great amount [in gifts], do not take [back] from it anything. Would you take it in injustice and manifest sin?
4:21
وَكَيۡفَ
And how
تَأۡخُذُونَهُۥ
could you take it
وَقَدۡ
when surely
أَفۡضَىٰ

another
and they have taken
مِنك ُم
from you

٢١strong
And how could you take it while you have gone in unto each other and they have taken from you a solemn covenant?
4:22

And do not marry those [women] whom your fathers married, except what has already occurred.1 Indeed, it was an immorality and hateful [to Allāh] and was evil as a way.
