1 Surahs5 Versesركوع 254
18:18
وَتَحۡسَبُهُمۡ
And you (would) think them
أَيۡقَاظًا
awake
وَهُمۡ
while they
رُقُودٌ‌ۚ
(were) asleep
وَنُقَلِّبُهُمۡ
And We turned them
ذَاتَ
to
ٱلۡيَمِينِ
the right
وَذَاتَ
and to
ٱلشِّمَالِ‌ۖ
the left
وَكَلۡبُهُم
while their dog
بَـٰسِطٌ
stretched
ذِرَاعَيۡهِ
his two forelegs
بِٱلۡوَصِيدِ‌ۚ
at the entrance
لَوِ
If
ٱطَّلَعۡتَ
you had looked
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
at them
لَوَلَّيۡتَ
you (would) have surely turned back
مِنۡهُمۡ
from them
فِرَارًا
(in) flight
وَلَمُلِئۡتَ
and surely you would have been filled
مِنۡهُمۡ
by them
رُعۡبًا
(with) terror
١٨
And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror.
18:19
وَكَذٰلِكَ
And similarly
بَعَثۡنَـٰهُمۡ
We raised them
لِيَتَسَآءَلُواۡ
that they might question
بَيۡنَهُمۡ‌ۚ
among them
قَالَ
Said
قَآئِلٌ
a speaker
مِّنۡهُمۡ
among them
كَمۡ
How long
لَبِثۡتُمۡ‌ۖ
have you remained
قَالُواۡ
They said
لَبِثۡنَا
We have remained
يَوۡمًا
a day
أَوۡ
or
بَعۡضَ
a part
يَوۡمٍ‌ۚ
(of) a day
قَالُواۡ
They said
رَبُّكُمۡ
Your Lord
أَعۡلَمُ
knows best
بِمَا
how long
لَبِثۡتُمۡ
you have remained
فَٱبۡعَثُوٓاۡ
So send
أَحَدَكُم
one of you
بِوَرِقِكُمۡ
with this silver coin of yours
هَـٰذِهِۦٓ
with this silver coin of yours
إِلَى
to
ٱلۡمَدِينَةِ
the city
فَلۡيَنظُرۡ
and let him see
أَيُّهَآ
which is
أَزۡكَىٰ
the purest
طَعَامًا
food
فَلۡيَأۡتِكُم
and let him bring to you
بِرِزۡقٍ
provision
مِّنۡهُ
from it
وَلۡيَتَلَطَّفۡ
and let him be cautious
وَلَا
And let not be aware
يُشۡعِرَنَّ
And let not be aware
بِكُمۡ
about you
أَحَدًا
anyone
١٩
And similarly,1 We awakened them that they might question one another. Said a speaker from among them, "How long have you remained [here]?" They said, "We have remained a day or part of a day." They said, "Your Lord is most knowing of how long you remained. So send one of you with this silver coin of yours to the city and let him look to which is the best of food and bring you provision from it and let him be cautious. And let no one be aware of you.
18:20
إِنَّهُمۡ
Indeed, [they]
إِن
if
يَظۡهَرُواۡ
they come to know
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
about you
يَرۡجُمُوكُمۡ
they will stone you
أَوۡ
or
يُعِيدُوكُمۡ
return you
فِى
to
مِلَّتِهِمۡ
their religion
وَلَن
And never
تُفۡلِحُوٓاۡ
will you succeed
إِذًا
then
أَبَدًا
ever
٢٠
Indeed, if they come to know of you, they will stone you or return you to their religion. And never would you succeed, then - ever."
18:21
وَكَذٰلِكَ
And similarly
أَعۡثَرۡنَا
We made known
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
about them
لِيَعۡلَمُوٓاۡ
that they might know
أَنَّ
that
وَعۡدَ
(the) Promise
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
حَقٌّ
(is) true
وَأَنَّ
and that
ٱلسَّاعَةَ
(about) the Hour
لَا
(there is) no
رَيۡبَ
doubt
فِيهَآ
in it
إِذۡ
When
يَتَنَـٰزَعُونَ
they disputed
بَيۡنَهُمۡ
among themselves
أَمۡرَهُمۡ‌ۖ
about their affair
فَقَالُواۡ
and they said
ٱبۡنُواۡ
Construct
عَلَيۡهِم
over them
بُنۡيَـٰنًا‌ۖ
a structure
رَّبُّهُمۡ
Their Lord
أَعۡلَمُ
knows best
بِهِمۡ‌ۚ
about them
قَالَ
Said
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
غَلَبُواۡ
prevailed
عَلَىٰٓ
in
أَمۡرِهِمۡ
their matter
لَنَتَّخِذَنَّ
Surely we will take
عَلَيۡهِم
over them
مَّسۡجِدًا
a place of worship
٢١
And similarly, We caused them to be found that they [who found them] would know that the promise of Allāh is truth and that of the Hour there is no doubt. [That was] when they1 disputed among themselves about their affair and [then] said, "Construct over them a structure. Their Lord is most knowing about them." Said those who prevailed in the matter, "We will surely take [for ourselves] over them a masjid."2
18:22
سَيَقُولُونَ
They say
ثَلَـٰثَةٌ
(they were) three
رَّابِعُهُمۡ
the forth of them
كَلۡبُهُمۡ
their dog
وَيَقُولُونَ
and they say
خَمۡسَةٌ
(they were) five
سَادِسُهُمۡ
the sixth of them
كَلۡبُهُمۡ
their dog
رَجۡمَۢا
guessing
بِٱلۡغَيۡبِ‌ۖ
about the unseen
وَيَقُولُونَ
and they say
سَبۡعَةٌ
(they were) seven
وَثَامِنُهُمۡ
and the eight of them
كَلۡبُهُمۡ‌ۚ
their dog
قُل
Say
رَّبِّىٓ
My Lord
أَعۡلَمُ
knows best
بِعِدَّتِهِم
their number
مَّا
None
يَعۡلَمُهُمۡ
knows them
إِلَّا
except
قَلِيلٌ‌ۗ
a few
فَلَا
So (do) not
تُمَارِ
argue
فِيهِمۡ
about them
إِلَّا
except
مِرَآءً
(with) an argument
ظَـٰهِرًا
obvious
وَلَا
and (do) not
تَسۡتَفۡتِ
inquire
فِيهِم
about them
مِّنۡهُمۡ
among them
أَحَدًا
(from) anyone
٢٢
They [i.e., people] will say there were three, the fourth of them being their dog; and they will say there were five, the sixth of them being their dog - guessing at the unseen; and they will say there were seven, and the eighth of them was their dog. Say, [O Muḥammad], "My Lord is most knowing of their number. None knows them except a few. So do not argue about them except with an obvious argument1 and do not inquire about them among [the speculators] from anyone."
