17:1
سُبۡ حَـٰ نَ
Exalted
(is) the One Who
أَسۡرَىٰ
took
بِعَبۡ دِهِۦ
His servant
لَيۡلاً
(by) night
from
Al-Masjid Al-Haraam
Al-Masjid Al-Haraam
إِلَى
to
Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa
Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa
which
بَـٰ رَكۡنَا
We blessed
حَوۡلَهُۥ
its surroundings
لِنُرِيَهُۥ
that We may show him
مِنۡ
of
ءَايَـٰ تِنَآۚ
Our Signs
إِنّ َهُۥ
Indeed He
هُوَ
He
(is) the All-Hearer
the All-Seer
Exalted1 is He who took His Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] by night from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām to al-Masjid al-Aqṣā,2 whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing,3 the Seeing.4
17:2
وَءَاتَيۡنَا
And We gave
مُوسَى
Musa
the Book
وَجَعَلۡنَـٰ هُ
and made it
هُدًى
a guidance
for the Children
إِسۡرٰ ٓءِيلَ
(of) Israel
أَلَّا
That not
تَتَّخِذُواۡ
you take
مِن
other than Me
other than Me
وَكِيلاً
٢(as) a Disposer of affairs
And We gave Moses the Scripture and made it a guidance for the Children of Israel that you not take other than Me as Disposer of affairs,1
17:3
ذُرِّيَّةَ
Offsprings
مَنۡ
(of one) who
حَمَلۡنَا
We carried
مَعَ
with
نُوحٍۚ
Nuh
إِنّ َهُۥ
Indeed, he
كَانَ
was
عَبۡ دًا
a servant
grateful
O descendants of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah. Indeed, he was a grateful servant.
17:4
وَقَضَيۡنَآ
And We decreed
إِلَىٰ
for
بَنِىٓ
(the) Children
إِسۡرٰ ٓءِيلَ
(of) Israel
فِى
in
the Book
لَتُفۡسِدُنّ َ
Surely you will cause corruption
فِى
in
the earth
مَرَّتَيۡنِ
twice
وَلَتَعۡلُنّ َ
and surely you will reach
عُلُوًّا
haughtiness
great
And We conveyed1 to the Children of Israel in the Scripture that, "You will surely cause corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely reach [a degree of] great haughtiness."
17:5
فَإِذَا
So when
جَا ٓءَ
came
وَعۡدُ
(the) promise
أُولَـٰ هُمَا
(for) the first of the two
بَعَثۡنَا
We raised
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
against you
عِبَادًا
servants
of Ours
أُوۡ لِى
those of great military might
بَأۡسٍ
those of great military might
those of great military might
and they entered
خِلَـٰ لَ
the inner most part
(of) the homes
وَكَانَ
and (it) was
وَعۡدًا
a promise
fulfilled
So when the [time of] promise came for the first of them,1 We sent against you servants of Ours - those of great military might, and they probed [even] into the homes,2 and it was a promise fulfilled.
17:6
ثُمّ َ
Then
رَدَدۡ نَا
We gave back
لَكُمُ
to you
the return victory
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
over them
وَأَمۡدَدۡ نَـٰ كُم
And We reinforced you
with the wealth
and sons
وَجَعَلۡنَـٰ كُمۡ
and made you
أَكۡثَرَ
more
نَفِيرًا
٦numerous
Then We gave back to you a return victory over them. And We reinforced you with wealth and sons and made you more numerous in manpower.
17:7
إِنۡ
If
أَحۡسَنت ُمۡ
you do good
أَحۡسَنت ُمۡ
you do good
لِأَنف ُسِكُمۡۖ
for yourselves
وَإِنۡ
and if
أَسَأۡتُمۡ
you do evil
فَلَهَاۚ
then it is for it
فَإِذَا
So when
جَا ٓءَ
came
وَعۡدُ
promise
the last
لِيَسُــۥٓ ــُٔواۡ
to sadden
وُجُوهَكُمۡ
your faces
وَلِيَدۡ خُلُواۡ
and to enter
the Masjid
كَمَا
just as
دَخَلُوهُ
they (had) entered it
أَوَّلَ
first
مَرَّةٍ
time
and to destroy
مَا
what
عَلَوۡاۡ
they had conquered
تَتۡبِيرًا
٧(with) destruction
[And said], "If you do good, you do good for yourselves; and if you do evil, [you do it] to them [i.e., yourselves]." Then when the final [i.e., second] promise came, [We sent your enemies] to sadden your faces and to enter the masjid [i.e., the temple in Jerusalem], as they entered it the first time, and to destroy what they had taken over with [total] destruction.
17:8
عَسَىٰ
(It) may be
رَبُّكُمۡ
that your Lord
أَن
that your Lord
(may) have mercy upon you
وَإِنۡ
But if
عُد تُّمۡ
you return
عُدۡ نَاۘ
We will return
وَجَعَلۡنَا
And We have made
جَهَنّ َمَ
Hell
لِلۡكَـٰ فِرِينَ
for the disbelievers
حَصِيرًا
٨a prison-bed
[Then Allāh said], "It is expected, [if you repent], that your Lord will have mercy upon you. But if you return [to sin], We will return [to punishment]. And We have made Hell, for the disbelievers, a prison-bed."
