12:1
الٓر‌ۚ
Alif Laam Ra
تِلۡكَ
These
ءَايَـٰتُ
(are the) Verses
ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ
(of) the Book
ٱلۡمُبِينِ
[the] clear
١
Alif, Lām, Rā.1 These are the verses of the clear Book.
12:2
إِنَّآ
Indeed, We
أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ
We have sent it down
قُرۡءٰنًا
(as) a Quran in Arabic
عَرَبِيًّا
(as) a Quran in Arabic
لَّعَلَّكُمۡ
so that you may
تَعۡقِلُونَ
understand
٢
Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’ān1 that you might understand.
12:3
نَحۡنُ
We
نَقُصُّ
relate
عَلَيۡكَ
to you
أَحۡسَنَ
the best
ٱلۡقَصَصِ
of the narrations
بِمَآ
in what
أَوۡحَيۡنَآ
We have revealed
إِلَيۡكَ
to you
هَـٰذَا
(of) this
ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ
the Quran
وَإِن
although
كُنتَ
you were
مِن
before it
قَبۡلِهِۦ
before it
لَمِنَ
surely among
ٱلۡغَـٰفِلِينَ
the unaware
٣
We relate to you, [O Muḥammad], the best of stories in what We have revealed to you of this Qur’ān although you were, before it, among the unaware.
12:4
إِذۡ
When
قَالَ
said
يُوسُفُ
Yusuf
لِأَبِيهِ
to his father
يَـٰٓأَبَتِ
O my father
إِنِّى
Indeed, I
رَأَيۡتُ
I saw
أَحَدَ
eleven
عَشَرَ
eleven
كَوۡكَبًا
stars
وَٱلشَّمۡسَ
and the sun
وَٱلۡقَمَرَ
and the moon
رَأَيۡتُهُمۡ
I saw them
لِى
to me
سَـٰجِدِينَ
prostrating
٤
[Of these stories mention] when Joseph said to his father,1 "O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me."
12:5
قَالَ
He said
يَـٰبُنَىَّ
O my son
لَا
(Do) not
تَقۡصُصۡ
relate
رُءۡيَاكَ
your vision
عَلَىٰٓ
to
إِخۡوَتِكَ
your brothers
فَيَكِيدُواۡ
lest they plan
لَكَ
against you
كَيۡدًا‌ۖ
a plot
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنَ
the Shaitaan
لِلۡإِنسَـٰنِ
(is) to man
عَدُوٌّ
an enemy
مُّبِينٌ
open
٥
He said, "O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they will contrive against you a plan. Indeed Satan, to man, is a manifest enemy.
12:6
وَكَذٰلِكَ
And thus
يَجۡتَبِيكَ
will choose you
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
وَيُعَلِّمُكَ
and will teach you
مِن
of
تَأۡوِيلِ
(the) interpretation
ٱلۡأَحَادِيثِ
(of) the narratives
وَيُتِمُّ
and complete
نِعۡمَتَهُۥ
His Favor
عَلَيۡكَ
on you
وَعَلَىٰٓ
and on
ءَالِ
(the) family
يَعۡقُوبَ
(of) Yaqub
كَمَآ
as
أَتَمَّهَا
He completed it
عَلَىٰٓ
on
أَبَوَيۡكَ
your two forefathers
مِن
before
قَبۡلُ
before
إِبۡرٰهِيمَ
Ibrahim
وَإِسۡحَـٰقَ‌ۚ
and Isaac
إِنَّ
Indeed
رَبَّكَ
your Lord
عَلِيمٌ
(is) All-Knower
حَكِيمٌ
All-Wise
٦
And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives [i.e., events or dreams] and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your fathers before, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise."
12:7
۞لَّقَدۡ
Certainly
كَانَ
were
فِى
in
يُوسُفَ
Yusuf
وَإِخۡوَتِهِۦٓ
and his brothers
ءَايَـٰتٌ
signs
لِّلسَّآئِلِينَ
for those who ask
٧
Certainly were there in Joseph and his brothers signs for those who ask, [such as]
12:8
إِذۡ
When
قَالُواۡ
they said
لَيُوسُفُ
Surely Yusuf
وَأَخُوهُ
and his brother
أَحَبُّ
(are) more beloved
إِلَىٰٓ
to
أَبِينَا
our father
مِنَّا
than we
وَنَحۡنُ
while we
عُصۡبَةٌ
(are) a group
إِنَّ
Indeed
أَبَانَا
our father
لَفِى
(is) surely in
ضَلَـٰلٍ
an error
مُّبِينٍ
clear
٨
When they said, "Joseph and his brother1 are more beloved to our father than we, while we are a clan. Indeed, our father is in clear error.
12:9
ٱقۡتُلُواۡ
Kill
يُوسُفَ
Yusuf
أَوِ
or
ٱطۡرَحُوهُ
cast him
أَرۡضًا
(to) a land
يَخۡلُ
so will be free
لَكُمۡ
for you
وَجۡهُ
(the) face
أَبِيكُمۡ
(of) your father
وَتَكُونُواۡ
and you will be
مِنۢ
after that
بَعۡدِهِۦ
after that
قَوۡمًا
a people
صَـٰلِحِينَ
righteous
٩
Kill Joseph or cast him out to [another] land; the countenance [i.e., attention] of your father will [then] be only for you, and you will be after that a righteous people."1
12:10
قَالَ
Said
قَآئِلٌ
a speaker
مِّنۡهُمۡ
among them
لَا
(Do) not
تَقۡتُلُواۡ
kill
يُوسُفَ
Yusuf
وَأَلۡقُوهُ
but throw him
فِى
in
غَيَـٰبَتِ
the bottom
ٱلۡجُبِّ
(of) the well
يَلۡتَقِطۡهُ
will pick him
بَعۡضُ
some
ٱلسَّيَّارَةِ
[the] caravan
إِن
if
كُنتُمۡ
you are
فَـٰعِلِينَ
doing
١٠
Said a speaker among them, "Do not kill Joseph but throw him into the bottom of the well; some travelers will pick him up - if you would do [something]."
12:11
قَالُواۡ
They said
يَـٰٓأَبَانَا
O our father
مَا
Why
لَكَ
(do) you
لَا
not
تَأۡمَ۫نَّا
trust us
عَلَىٰ
with
يُوسُفَ
Yusuf
وَإِنَّا
while indeed, we
لَهُۥ
(are) for him
لَنَـٰصِحُونَ
surely well-wishers
١١
They said, "O our father, why do you not entrust us with Joseph while indeed, we are to him sincere counselors?
12:12
أَرۡسِلۡهُ
Send him
مَعَنَا
with us
غَدًا
tomorrow
يَرۡتَعۡ
(to) enjoy
وَيَلۡعَبۡ
and play
وَإِنَّا
And indeed, we
لَهُۥ
for him
لَحَـٰفِظُونَ
(will) surely (be) guardians
١٢
Send him with us tomorrow that he may eat well and play. And indeed, we will be his guardians."
12:13
قَالَ
He said
إِنِّى
Indeed, [I]
لَيَحۡزُنُنِىٓ
it surely saddens me
أَن
that
تَذۡهَبُواۡ
you should take him
بِهِۦ
you should take him
وَأَخَافُ
and I fear
أَن
that
يَأۡكُلَهُ
would eat him
ٱلذِّئۡبُ
a wolf
وَأَنتُمۡ
while you
عَنۡهُ
of him
غَـٰفِلُونَ
(are) unaware
١٣
[Jacob] said, "Indeed, it saddens me that you should take him, and I fear that a wolf would eat him while you are of him unaware."
12:14
قَالُواۡ
They said
لَئِنۡ
If
أَكَلَهُ
eats him
ٱلذِّئۡبُ
the wolf
وَنَحۡنُ
while we
عُصۡبَةٌ
(are) a group
إِنَّآ
indeed, we
إِذًا
then
لَّخَـٰسِرُونَ
surely (would be) losers
١٤
They said, "If a wolf should eat him while we are a [strong] clan, indeed, we would then be losers."
12:15
فَلَمَّا
So when
ذَهَبُواۡ
they took him
بِهِۦ
they took him
وَأَجۡمَعُوٓاۡ
and agreed
أَن
that
يَجۡعَلُوهُ
they put him
فِى
in
غَيَـٰبَتِ
(the) bottom
ٱلۡجُبِّ‌ۚ
(of) the well
وَأَوۡحَيۡنَآ
But We inspired
إِلَيۡهِ
to him
لَتُنَبِّئَنَّهُم
Surely, you will inform them
بِأَمۡرِهِمۡ
about this affair
هَـٰذَا
about this affair
وَهُمۡ
while they
لَا
(do) not
يَشۡعُرُونَ
perceive
١٥
So when they took him [out] and agreed to put him into the bottom of the well...1 But We inspired to him, "You will surely inform them [someday] about this affair of theirs while they do not perceive [your identity]."
12:16
وَجَآءُوٓ
And they came
أَبَاهُمۡ
(to) their father
عِشَآءً
early at night
يَبۡكُونَ
weeping
١٦
And they came to their father at night, weeping.
12:17
قَالُواۡ
They said
يَـٰٓأَبَانَآ
O our father
إِنَّا
Indeed, we
ذَهَبۡنَا
[we] went
نَسۡتَبِقُ
racing each other
وَتَرَكۡنَا
and we left
يُوسُفَ
Yusuf
عِندَ
with
مَتَـٰعِنَا
our possessions
فَأَكَلَهُ
and ate him
ٱلذِّئۡبُ‌ۖ
the wolf
وَمَآ
But not
أَنتَ
you
بِمُؤۡمِنٍ
(will) believe
لَّنَا
us
وَلَوۡ
even if
كُنَّا
we are
صَـٰدِقِينَ
truthful
١٧
They said, "O our father, indeed we went racing each other and left Joseph with our possessions, and a wolf ate him. But you would not believe us, even if we were truthful."
12:18
وَجَآءُو
And they brought
عَلَىٰ
upon
قَمِيصِهِۦ
his shirt
بِدَمٍ
with false blood
كَذِبٍ‌ۚ
with false blood
قَالَ
He said
بَلۡ
Nay
سَوَّلَتۡ
has enticed you
لَكُمۡ
has enticed you
أَنفُسُكُمۡ
your souls
أَمۡرًا‌ۖ
(to) a matter
فَصَبۡرٌ
so patience
جَمِيلٌ‌ۖ
(is) beautiful
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
ٱلۡمُسۡتَعَانُ
(is) the One sought for help
عَلَىٰ
against
مَا
what
تَصِفُونَ
you describe
١٨
And they brought upon his shirt false blood.1 [Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. And Allāh is the one sought for help against that which you describe."
12:19
وَجَآءَتۡ
And there came
سَيَّارَةٌ
a caravan
فَأَرۡسَلُواۡ
and they sent
وَارِدَهُمۡ
their water drawer
فَأَدۡلَىٰ
then he let down
دَلۡوَهُۥ‌ۖ
his bucket
قَالَ
He said
يَـٰبُشۡرَىٰ
O good news
هَـٰذَا
This
غُلَـٰمٌ‌ۚ
(is) a boy
وَأَسَرُّوهُ
And they hid him
بِضَـٰعَةً‌ۚ
(as) a merchandise
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
عَلِيمُۢ
(is) All-Knower
بِمَا
of what
يَعۡمَلُونَ
they do
١٩
And there came a company of travelers; then they sent their water drawer, and he let down his bucket. He said, "Good news! Here is a boy." And they concealed him, [taking him] as merchandise;1 and Allāh was Knowing of what they did.
12:20
وَشَرَوۡهُ
And they sold him
بِثَمَنِۭ
for a price
بَخۡسٍ
very low
دَرٰهِمَ
dirhams
مَعۡدُودَةٍ
few
وَكَانُواۡ
and they were
فِيهِ
about him
مِنَ
of
ٱلزّٰهِدِينَ
those keen to give up
٢٠
And they sold him for a reduced price - a few dirhams - and they were, concerning him, of those content with little.
12:21
وَقَالَ
And said
ٱلَّذِى
the one who
ٱشۡتَرَٮٰهُ
bought him
مِن
of
مِّصۡرَ
Egypt
لِٱمۡرَأَتِهِۦٓ
to his wife
أَكۡرِمِى
Make comfortable
مَثۡوَٮٰهُ
his stay
عَسَىٰٓ
Perhaps
أَن
that
يَنفَعَنَآ
(he) will benefit us
أَوۡ
or
نَتَّخِذَهُۥ
we will take him
وَلَدًا‌ۚ
(as) a son
وَكَذٰلِكَ
And thus
مَكَّنَّا
We established
لِيُوسُفَ
Yusuf
فِى
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
the land
وَلِنُعَلِّمَهُۥ
that We might teach him
مِن
(the) interpretation of
تَأۡوِيلِ
(the) interpretation of
ٱلۡأَحَادِيثِ‌ۚ
the events
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
غَالِبٌ
(is) Predominant
عَلَىٰٓ
over
أَمۡرِهِۦ
His affairs
وَلَـٰكِنَّ
but
أَكۡثَرَ
most
ٱلنَّاسِ
(of) the people
لَا
(do) not
يَعۡلَمُونَ
know
٢١
And the one from Egypt1 who bought him said to his wife, "Make his residence comfortable. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son." And thus, We established Joseph in the land that We might teach him the interpretation of events [i.e., dreams]. And Allāh is predominant over His affair, but most of the people do not know.
12:22
وَلَمَّا
And when
بَلَغَ
he reached
أَشُدَّهُۥٓ
his maturity
ءَاتَيۡنَـٰهُ
We gave him
حُكۡمًا
wisdom
وَعِلۡمًا‌ۚ
and knowledge
وَكَذٰلِكَ
And thus
نَجۡزِى
We reward
ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ
the good-doers
٢٢
And when he [i.e., Joseph] reached maturity, We gave him judgement and knowledge. And thus We reward the doers of good.
12:23
وَرٰوَدَتۡهُ
And sought to seduce him
ٱلَّتِى
she who
هُوَ
he (was)
فِى
in
بَيۡتِهَا
her house
عَن
from
نَّفۡسِهِۦ
his self
وَغَلَّقَتِ
And she closed
ٱلۡأَبۡوٰبَ
the doors
وَقَالَتۡ
and she said
هَيۡتَ
Come on
لَكَ‌ۚ
you
قَالَ
He said
مَعَاذَ
I seek refuge in Allah
ٱللَّهِ‌ۖ
I seek refuge in Allah
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, he
رَبِّىٓ
(is) my lord
أَحۡسَنَ
(who has) made good
مَثۡوَاىَ‌ۖ
my stay
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed
لَا
not
يُفۡلِحُ
will succeed
ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ
the wrongdoers
٢٣
And she, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him. She closed the doors and said, "Come, you." He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allāh. Indeed, he1 is my master, who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed."
12:24
وَلَقَدۡ
And certainly
هَمَّتۡ
she did desire
بِهِۦ‌ۖ
him
وَهَمَّ
and he would have desired
بِهَا
her
لَوۡلَآ
if not
أَن
that
رَّءَا
he saw
بُرۡهَـٰنَ
the proof
رَبِّهِۦ‌ۚ
(of) his Lord
كَذٰلِكَ
Thus
لِنَصۡرِفَ
that We might avert
عَنۡهُ
from him
ٱلسُّوٓءَ
the evil
وَٱلۡفَحۡشَآءَ‌ۚ
and the immorality
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, he
مِنۡ
(was) of
عِبَادِنَا
Our slaves
ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ
the sincere
٢٤
And she certainly determined [to seduce] him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof [i.e., sign] of his Lord. And thus [it was] that We should avert from him evil and immorality. Indeed, he was of Our chosen servants.
12:25
وَٱسۡتَبَقَا
And they both raced
ٱلۡبَابَ
(to) the door
وَقَدَّتۡ
and she tore
قَمِيصَهُۥ
his shirt
مِن
from
دُبُرٍ
the back
وَأَلۡفَيَا
and they both found
سَيِّدَهَا
her husband
لَدَا
at
ٱلۡبَابِ‌ۚ
the door
قَالَتۡ
She said
مَا
What
جَزَآءُ
(is) the recompense
مَنۡ
(of one) who
أَرَادَ
intended
بِأَهۡلِكَ
for your wife
سُوٓءًا
evil
إِلَّآ
except
أَن
that
يُسۡجَنَ
he be imprisoned
أَوۡ
or
عَذَابٌ
a punishment
أَلِيمٌ
painful
٢٥
And they both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back, and they found her husband at the door. She said, "What is the recompense of one who intended evil for your wife but that he be imprisoned or a painful punishment?"
12:26
قَالَ
He said
هِىَ
She
رٰوَدَتۡنِى
sought to seduce me
عَن
about
نَّفۡسِى‌ۚ
myself
وَشَهِدَ
And testified
شَاهِدٌ
a witness
مِّنۡ
of
أَهۡلِهَآ
her family
إِن
If
كَانَ
[is]
قَمِيصُهُۥ
his shirt
قُدَّ
(is) torn
مِن
from
قُبُلٍ
the front
فَصَدَقَتۡ
then she has spoken the truth
وَهُوَ
and he
مِنَ
(is) of
ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِينَ
the liars
٢٦
[Joseph] said, "It was she who sought to seduce me." And a witness from her family testified, "If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth, and he is of the liars.
12:27
وَإِن
But if
كَانَ
[is]
قَمِيصُهُۥ
his shirt
قُدَّ
(is) torn
مِن
from
دُبُرٍ
(the) back
فَكَذَبَتۡ
then she has lied
وَهُوَ
and he
مِنَ
(is) of
ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
the truthful
٢٧
But if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied, and he is of the truthful."
12:28
فَلَمَّا
So when
رَءَا
he saw
قَمِيصَهُۥ
his shirt
قُدَّ
torn
مِن
from
دُبُرٍ
(the) back
قَالَ
he said
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, it
مِن
(is) of
كَيۡدِكُنَّ‌ۖ
your plot
إِنَّ
Indeed
كَيۡدَكُنَّ
your plot
عَظِيمٌ
(is) great
٢٨
So when he [i.e., her husband] saw his shirt torn from the back, he said, "Indeed, it is of your [i.e., women's] plan. Indeed, your plan is great [i.e., vehement].
12:29
يُوسُفُ
Yusuf
أَعۡرِضۡ
turn away
عَنۡ
from
هَـٰذَا‌ۚ
this
وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرِى
And ask forgiveness
لِذَنۢبِكِ‌ۖ
for your sin
إِنَّكِ
Indeed, you
كُنتِ
are
مِنَ
of
ٱلۡخَاطِــِٔينَ
the sinful
٢٩
Joseph, ignore this.1 And, [my wife], ask forgiveness for your sin. Indeed, you were of the sinful."
12:30
۞وَقَالَ
And said
نِسۡوَةٌ
women
فِى
in
ٱلۡمَدِينَةِ
the city
ٱمۡرَأَتُ
The wife of
ٱلۡعَزِيزِ
Aziz
تُرٰوِدُ
(is) seeking to seduce
فَتَـٰهَا
her slave boy
عَن
about
نَّفۡسِهِۦ‌ۖ
himself
قَدۡ
indeed
شَغَفَهَا
he has impassioned her
حُبًّا‌ۖ
(with) love
إِنَّا
Indeed, we
لَنَرَٮٰهَا
[we] surely see her
فِى
in
ضَلَـٰلٍ
an error
مُّبِينٍ
clear
٣٠
And women in the city said, "The wife of al-ʿAzeez is seeking to seduce her slave boy; he has impassioned her with love. Indeed, we see her [to be] in clear error."
12:31
فَلَمَّا
So when
سَمِعَتۡ
she heard
بِمَكۡرِهِنَّ
of their scheming
أَرۡسَلَتۡ
she sent
إِلَيۡهِنَّ
for them
وَأَعۡتَدَتۡ
and she prepared
لَهُنَّ
for them
مُتَّكَــًٔا
a banquet
وَءَاتَتۡ
and she gave
كُلَّ
each
وٰحِدَةٍ
one
مِّنۡهُنَّ
of them
سِكِّينًا
a knife
وَقَالَتِ
and she said
ٱخۡرُجۡ
Come out
عَلَيۡهِنَّ‌ۖ
before them
فَلَمَّا
Then when
رَأَيۡنَهُۥٓ
they saw him
أَكۡبَرۡنَهُۥ
they greatly admired him
وَقَطَّعۡنَ
and cut
أَيۡدِيَهُنَّ
their hands
وَقُلۡنَ
they said
حَـٰشَ
Forbid
لِلَّهِ
Allah
مَا
not
هَـٰذَا
(is) this
بَشَرًا
a man
إِنۡ
not
هَـٰذَآ
(is) this
إِلَّا
but
مَلَكٌ
an angel
كَرِيمٌ
noble
٣١
So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared for them a banquet and gave each one of them a knife and said [to Joseph], "Come out before them." And when they saw him, they greatly admired him and cut their hands1 and said, "Perfect is Allāh!2 This is not a man; this is none but a noble angel."
12:32
قَالَتۡ
She said
فَذٰلِكُنَّ
That
ٱلَّذِى
(is) the one
لُمۡتُنَّنِى
you blamed me
فِيهِ‌ۖ
about him
وَلَقَدۡ
And certainly
رٰوَدتُّهُۥ
I sought to seduce him
عَن
[from]
نَّفۡسِهِۦ
[himself]
فَٱسۡتَعۡصَمَ‌ۖ
but he saved himself
وَلَئِن
and if
لَّمۡ
not
يَفۡعَلۡ
he does
مَآ
what
ءَامُرُهُۥ
I order him
لَيُسۡجَنَنَّ
surely, he will be imprisoned
وَلَيَكُونًا
and certainly will be
مِّنَ
of
ٱلصَّـٰغِرِينَ
those who are disgraced
٣٢
She said, "That is the one about whom you blamed me. And I certainly sought to seduce him, but he firmly refused; and if he will not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned and will be of those debased."
12:33
قَالَ
He said
رَبِّ
My Lord
ٱلسِّجۡنُ
the prison
أَحَبُّ
(is) dearer
إِلَىَّ
to me
مِمَّا
than what
يَدۡعُونَنِىٓ
they invite me
إِلَيۡهِ‌ۖ
to it
وَإِلَّا
And unless
تَصۡرِفۡ
You turn away
عَنِّى
from me
كَيۡدَهُنَّ
their plot
أَصۡبُ
I might incline
إِلَيۡهِنَّ
towards them
وَأَكُن
and [I] be
مِّنَ
of
ٱلۡجَـٰهِلِينَ
the ignorant
٣٣
He said, "My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant."
12:34
فَٱسۡتَجَابَ
So responded
لَهُۥ
to him
رَبُّهُۥ
his Lord
فَصَرَفَ
and turned away
عَنۡهُ

إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, [He]
هُوَ
He
ٱلسَّمِيعُ
(is) All-Hearer
ٱلۡعَلِيمُ
All-Knower
٣٤
So his Lord responded to him and averted from him their plan. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
12:35
ثُمَّ
Then

حَتَّىٰ
until
حِينٍ
a time
٣٥
Then it appeared to them after they had seen the signs1 that he [i.e., al-ʿAzeez] should surely imprison him for a time.2
12:36
وَدَخَلَ
And entered
مَعَهُ
with him
ٱلسِّجۡنَ
(in) the prison
فَتَيَانِ‌ۖ
two young men
قَالَ
Said
أَحَدُهُمَآ

وَقَالَ
And said
ٱلۡأَخَرُ

إِنِّىٓ
Indeed, I

إِنَّا
indeed, we
نَرَٮٰكَ
[we] see you

the good-doers
٣٦
And there entered the prison with him two young men. One of them said, "Indeed, I have seen myself [in a dream] pressing [grapes for] wine." The other said, "Indeed, I have seen myself carrying upon my head [some] bread, from which the birds were eating. Inform us of its interpretation; indeed, we see you to be of those who do good."
12:37
قَالَ
He said

٣٧
He said, "You will not receive food that is provided to you except that I will inform you of its interpretation before it comes to you. That is from what my Lord has taught me. Indeed, I have left the religion of a people who do not believe in Allāh, and they, in the Hereafter, are disbelievers.

And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allāh. That is from the favor of Allāh upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful.
12:39

You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them,1 you and your fathers, for which Allāh has sent down no evidence. Legislation is not but for Allāh. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.

Said [the king to the women], "What was your condition when you sought to seduce Joseph?" They said, "Perfect is Allāh!1 We know about him no evil." The wife of al-ʿAzeez said, "Now the truth has become evident. It was I who sought to seduce him, and indeed, he is of the truthful.

And thus We established Joseph in the land to settle therein wherever he willed. We touch with Our mercy whom We will, and We do not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.

٥٨
And the brothers of Joseph came [seeking food], and they entered upon him; and he recognized them, but he was to them unknown.1
12:59
وَلَمَّا
And when
جَهَّزَهُم
he had furnished them

he said

And when he had furnished them with their supplies, he said, "Bring me a brother of yours from your father.1 Do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of accommodators?

But if you do not bring him to me, no measure will there be [hereafter] for you from me, nor will you approach me."
12:61
قَالُواۡ
They said

وَإِنَّا
and indeed we
لَفَـٰعِلُونَ

٦١
They said, "We will attempt to dissuade his father from [keeping] him, and indeed, we will do [it]."
12:62
وَقَالَ
And he said
لِفِتۡيَـٰنِهِ
to his servants
ٱجۡعَلُواۡ
Put
بِضَـٰعَتَهُمۡ
their merchandise

٦٢
And [Joseph] said to his servants, "Put their merchandise1 into their saddlebags so they might recognize it when they have gone back to their people that perhaps they will [again] return."
12:63
فَلَمَّا
So when
رَجَعُوٓاۡ
they returned
إِلَىٰٓ
to
أَبِيهِمۡ
their father
قَالُواۡ
they said
يَـٰٓأَبَانَا
O our father
مُنِعَ
Has been denied
مِنَّا
to us
ٱلۡكَيۡلُ
the measure
فَأَرۡسِلۡ
so send
مَعَنَآ
with us
أَخَانَا
our brother
نَكۡتَلۡ
(that) we will get measure
وَإِنَّا
And indeed, we
لَهُۥ
for him
لَحَـٰفِظُونَ
(will) surely (be) guardians
٦٣
So when they returned to their father, they said, "O our father, [further] measure has been denied to us, so send with us our brother [that] we will be given measure. And indeed, we will be his guardians."
12:64
قَالَ
He said
هَلۡ
Should
ءَامَنُكُمۡ
I entrust you
عَلَيۡهِ
with him
إِلَّا
except
كَمَآ
as
أَمِنتُكُمۡ
I entrusted you
عَلَىٰٓ
with
أَخِيهِ
his brother
مِن
before
قَبۡلُ‌ۖ
before
فَٱللَّهُ
But Allah
خَيۡرٌ
(is) the best
حَـٰفِظًا‌ۖ
Guardian
وَهُوَ
and He
أَرۡحَمُ
(is the) Most Merciful
ٱلرّٰحِمِينَ
(of) the merciful
٦٤
He said, "Should I entrust you with him except [under coercion] as I entrusted you with his brother before? But Allāh is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful."
12:65
وَلَمَّا
And when
فَتَحُواۡ
they opened
مَتَـٰعَهُمۡ
their baggage
وَجَدُواۡ
they found
بِضَـٰعَتَهُمۡ
their merchandise
رُدَّتۡ
returned
إِلَيۡهِمۡ‌ۖ
to them
قَالُواۡ
They said
يَـٰٓأَبَانَا
O our father
مَا
What
نَبۡغِى‌ۖ
(could) we desire
هَـٰذِهِۦ
This
بِضَـٰعَتُنَا
(is) our merchandise
رُدَّتۡ
returned
إِلَيۡنَا‌ۖ
to us
وَنَمِيرُ
And we will get provision
أَهۡلَنَا
(for) our family
وَنَحۡفَظُ
and we will protect
أَخَانَا
our brother
وَنَزۡدَادُ
and get an increase
كَيۡلَ
measure
بَعِيرٍ‌ۖ
(of) a camel's (load)
ذٰلِكَ
That
كَيۡلٌ
(is) a measurement
يَسِيرٌ
easy
٦٥
And when they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise returned to them. They said, "O our father, what [more] could we desire? This is our merchandise returned to us. And we will obtain supplies [i.e., food] for our family and protect our brother and obtain an increase of a camel's load; that is an easy measurement."1
12:66
قَالَ
He said
لَنۡ
Never
أُرۡسِلَهُۥ
will I send him
مَعَكُمۡ
with you
حَتَّىٰ
until
تُؤۡتُونِ
you give to me
مَوۡثِقًا
a promise
مِّنَ
by
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
لَتَأۡتُنَّنِى
that surely you will bring him to me
بِهِۦٓ
that surely you will bring him to me
إِلَّآ
unless
أَن
that
يُحَاطَ
you are surrounded
بِكُمۡ‌ۖ
you are surrounded
فَلَمَّآ
And when
ءَاتَوۡهُ
they had given him
مَوۡثِقَهُمۡ
their promise
قَالَ
he said
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
عَلَىٰ
over
مَا
what
نَقُولُ
we say
وَكِيلٌ
(is) a Guardian
٦٦
[Jacob] said, "Never will I send him with you until you give me a promise [i.e., oath] by Allāh that you will bring him [back] to me, unless you should be surrounded [i.e., overcome by enemies]." And when they had given their promise, he said, "Allāh, over what we say, is Entrusted."1
12:67
وَقَالَ
And he said
يَـٰبَنِىَّ
O my sons
لَا
(Do) not
تَدۡخُلُواۡ
enter
مِنۢ
from
بَابٍ
one gate
وٰحِدٍ
one gate
وَٱدۡخُلُواۡ
but enter
مِنۡ
from
أَبۡوٰبٍ
gates
مُّتَفَرِّقَةٍ‌ۖ
different
وَمَآ
And not
أُغۡنِى
I can avail
عَنكُم
you
مِّنَ
against
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
مِن
any
شَىۡءٍ‌ۖ
thing
إِنِ
Not
ٱلۡحُكۡمُ
(is) the decision
إِلَّا
except
لِلَّهِ‌ۖ
with Allah
عَلَيۡهِ
upon Him
تَوَكَّلۡتُ‌ۖ
I put my trust
وَعَلَيۡهِ
and upon Him
فَلۡيَتَوَكَّلِ
let put (their) trust
ٱلۡمُتَوَكِّلُونَ
the ones who put trust
٦٧
And he said, "O my sons, do not enter from one gate but enter from different gates; and I cannot avail you against [the decree of] Allāh at all. The decision is only for Allāh; upon Him I have relied, and upon Him let those who would rely [indeed] rely."
12:68
وَلَمَّا
And when
دَخَلُواۡ
they entered
مِنۡ
from
حَيۡثُ
where
أَمَرَهُمۡ
ordered them
أَبُوهُم
their father
مَّا
not
كَانَ
it
يُغۡنِى
avail(ed)
عَنۡهُم
them
مِّنَ
against
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
مِن
any
شَىۡءٍ
thing
إِلَّا
but
حَاجَةً
(it was) a need
فِى
of
نَفۡسِ
Yaqub's soul
يَعۡقُوبَ
Yaqub's soul
قَضَـٰهَا‌ۚ
which he carried out
وَإِنَّهُۥ
And indeed, he
لَذُو
(was) a possessor
عِلۡمٍ
(of) knowledge
لِّمَا
because
عَلَّمۡنَـٰهُ
We had taught him
وَلَـٰكِنَّ
but
أَكۡثَرَ
most
ٱلنَّاسِ
(of) the people
لَا
(do) not
يَعۡلَمُونَ
know
٦٨
And when they entered from where their father had ordered them, it did not avail them against Allāh at all except [it was] a need [i.e., concern] within the soul of Jacob, which he satisfied. And indeed, he was a possessor of knowledge because of what We had taught him, but most of the people do not know.
12:69
وَلَمَّا
And when
دَخَلُواۡ
they entered
عَلَىٰ
upon
يُوسُفَ
Yusuf
ءَاوَىٰٓ
he took
إِلَيۡهِ
to himself
أَخَاهُ‌ۖ
his brother
قَالَ
He said
إِنِّىٓ
Indeed, I
أَنَاۡ
[I] am
أَخُوكَ
your brother
فَلَا
so (do) not
تَبۡتَئِسۡ
grieve
بِمَا
for what
كَانُواۡ
they used (to)
يَعۡمَلُونَ
do
٦٩
And when they entered upon Joseph, he took his brother to himself; he said, "Indeed, I am your brother, so do not despair over what they used to do [to me]."
12:70
فَلَمَّا
So when
جَهَّزَهُم
he had furnished them
بِجَهَازِهِمۡ
with their supplies
جَعَلَ
he put
ٱلسِّقَايَةَ
the drinking cup
فِى
in
رَحۡلِ
the bag
أَخِيهِ
(of) his brother
ثُمَّ
Then
أَذَّنَ
called out
مُؤَذِّنٌ
an announcer
أَيَّتُهَا
O you
ٱلۡعِيرُ
(in) the caravan
إِنَّكُمۡ
Indeed, you
لَسَـٰرِقُونَ
surely (are) thieves
٧٠
So when he had furnished them with their supplies, he put the [gold measuring] bowl into the bag of his brother. Then an announcer called out, "O caravan, indeed you are thieves."
12:71
قَالُواۡ
They said
وَأَقۡبَلُواۡ
turning towards
عَلَيۡهِم
them
مَّاذَا
What (is it)
تَفۡقِدُونَ
you miss
٧١
They said while approaching them, "What is it you are missing?"
12:72
قَالُواۡ
They said
نَفۡقِدُ
We are missing
صُوَاعَ
(the) cup
ٱلۡمَلِكِ
(of) the king
وَلِمَن
And for (one) who
جَآءَ
brings
بِهِۦ
it
حِمۡلُ
(is) a load
بَعِيرٍ
(of) a camel
وَأَنَاۡ
and I
بِهِۦ
for it
زَعِيمٌ
(is) responsible
٧٢
They said, "We are missing the measure of the king. And for he who produces it is [the reward of] a camel's load, and I am responsible for it."
12:73
قَالُواۡ
They said
تَٱللَّهِ
By Allah
لَقَدۡ
certainly
عَلِمۡتُم
you know
مَّا
not
جِئۡنَا
we came
لِنُفۡسِدَ
that we cause corruption
فِى
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
the land
وَمَا
and not
كُنَّا
we are
سَـٰرِقِينَ
thieves
٧٣
They said, "By Allāh, you have certainly known that we did not come to cause corruption in the land, and we have not been thieves."
12:74
قَالُواۡ
They said
فَمَا
Then what
جَزٰٓؤُهُۥٓ
(will be the) recompense (of) it
إِن
if
كُنتُمۡ
you are
كَـٰذِبِينَ
liars
٧٤
They [the accusers] said, "Then what would be its recompense1 if you should be liars?"
12:75
قَالُواۡ
They said
جَزٰٓؤُهُۥ
Its recompense
مَن
(is that one) who
وُجِدَ
it is found
فِى
in
رَحۡلِهِۦ
his bag
فَهُوَ
then he
جَزٰٓؤُهُۥ‌ۚ
(will be) his recompense
كَذٰلِكَ
Thus
نَجۡزِى
(do) we recompense
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
the wrongdoers
٧٥
[The brothers] said, "Its recompense is that he in whose bag it is found - he [himself] will be its recompense.1 Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers."
12:76
فَبَدَأَ
So he began
بِأَوۡعِيَتِهِمۡ
with their bags
قَبۡلَ
before
وِعَآءِ
(the) bag
أَخِيهِ
(of) his brother
ثُمَّ
then
ٱسۡتَخۡرَجَهَا
he brought it out
مِن
from
وِعَآءِ
(the) bag
أَخِيهِ‌ۚ
(of) his brother
كَذٰلِكَ
Thus
كِدۡنَا
(did) We plan
لِيُوسُفَ‌ۖ
for Yusuf
مَا
He could not
كَانَ
He could not
لِيَأۡخُذَ
take
أَخَاهُ
his brother
فِى
by
دِينِ
the law
ٱلۡمَلِكِ
(of) the king
إِلَّآ
except
أَن
that
يَشَآءَ
Allah willed
ٱللَّهُ‌ۚ
Allah willed
نَرۡفَعُ
We raise
دَرَجَـٰتٍ
(in) degrees
مَّن
whom
نَّشَآءُ‌ۗ
We will
وَفَوۡقَ
but over
كُلِّ
every
ذِى
possessor
عِلۡمٍ
(of) knowledge
عَلِيمٌ
(is) the All-Knower
٧٦
So he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion [i.e., law] of the king except that Allāh willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.1
12:77
۞قَالُوٓاۡ
They said
إِن
If
يَسۡرِقۡ
he steals
فَقَدۡ
then verily
سَرَقَ
stole
أَخٌ
a brother
لَّهُۥ
of his
مِن
before
قَبۡلُ‌ۚ
before
فَأَسَرَّهَا
But Yusuf kept it secret
يُوسُفُ
But Yusuf kept it secret
فِى
within
نَفۡسِهِۦ
himself
وَلَمۡ
and (did) not
يُبۡدِهَا
reveal it
لَهُمۡ‌ۚ
to them
قَالَ
He said
أَنتُمۡ
You
شَرٌّ
(are the) worse
مَّكَانًا‌ۖ
(in) position
وَٱللَّهُ
and Allah
أَعۡلَمُ
knows best
بِمَا
of what
تَصِفُونَ
you describe
٧٧
They said, "If he steals - a brother of his has stolen before." But Joseph kept it within himself and did not reveal it to them.1 He said, "You are worse in position, and Allāh is most knowing of what you describe."
12:78
قَالُواۡ
They said
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا
O
ٱلۡعَزِيزُ
Aziz
إِنَّ
Indeed
لَهُۥٓ
he has
أَبًا
a father
شَيۡخًا
old
كَبِيرًا
[great]
فَخُذۡ
so take
أَحَدَنَا
one of us
مَكَانَهُۥٓ‌ۖ
(in) his place
إِنَّا
Indeed, we
نَرَٮٰكَ
[we] see you
مِنَ
of
ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ
the good-doers
٧٨
They said, "O ʿAzeez,1 indeed he has a father [who is] an old man, so take one of us in place of him. Indeed, we see you as a doer of good."
12:79
قَالَ
He said
مَعَاذَ
Allah forbid
ٱللَّهِ
Allah forbid
أَن
that
نَّأۡخُذَ
we take
إِلَّا
except
مَن
(one) who
وَجَدۡنَا
we found
مَتَـٰعَنَا
our possession
عِندَهُۥٓ
with him
إِنَّآ
Indeed, we
إِذًا
then
لَّظَـٰلِمُونَ
surely (would be) wrongdoers
٧٩
He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allāh [to prevent] that we take except him with whom we found our possession. Indeed, we would then be unjust."
12:80
فَلَمَّا
So when
ٱسۡتَيۡــَٔسُواۡ
they despaired
مِنۡهُ
of him
خَلَصُواۡ
they secluded themselves
نَجِيًّا‌ۖ
(in) private consultation
قَالَ
Said
كَبِيرُهُمۡ
the eldest among them
أَلَمۡ
Do not
تَعۡلَمُوٓاۡ
you know
أَنَّ
that
أَبَاكُمۡ
your father
قَدۡ
has taken
أَخَذَ
has taken
عَلَيۡكُم
upon you
مَّوۡثِقًا
a promise
مِّنَ
by
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
وَمِن
and before
قَبۡلُ
and before
مَا
that
فَرَّطتُمۡ
you failed
فِى
concerning
يُوسُفَ‌ۖ
Yusuf
فَلَنۡ
So never
أَبۡرَحَ
will I leave
ٱلۡأَرۡضَ
the land
حَتَّىٰ
until
يَأۡذَنَ
permits
لِىٓ
me
أَبِىٓ
my father
أَوۡ
or
يَحۡكُمَ
Allah decides
ٱللَّهُ
Allah decides
لِى‌ۖ
for me
وَهُوَ
and He
خَيۡرُ
(is) the Best
ٱلۡحَـٰكِمِينَ
(of) the judges
٨٠
So when they had despaired of him, they secluded themselves in private consultation. The eldest of them said, "Do you not know that your father has taken upon you an oath by Allāh and [that] before you failed in [your duty to] Joseph? So I will never leave [this] land until my father permits me or Allāh decides for me,1 and He is the best of judges.
12:81
ٱرۡجِعُوٓاۡ
Return
إِلَىٰٓ
to
أَبِيكُمۡ
your father
فَقُولُواۡ
and say
يَـٰٓأَبَانَآ
'O our father
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱبۡنَكَ
your son
سَرَقَ

شَهِدۡنَآ
we testify
إِلَّا
except
بِمَا
of what
عَلِمۡنَا
we knew
وَمَا
And not
كُنَّا
we were
لِلۡغَيۡبِ
of the unseen
حَـٰفِظِينَ
guardians
٨١
Return to your father and say, 'O our father, indeed your son has stolen, and we did not testify except to what we knew. And we were not witnesses of the unseen.1
12:82
وَسۡــَٔلِ
And ask
ٱلۡقَرۡيَةَ
the town
ٱلَّتِى
where
كُنَّا
we were
فِيهَا
[in it]
وَٱلۡعِيرَ
and the caravan
ٱلَّتِىٓ
which
أَقۡبَلۡنَا
we returned
فِيهَا‌ۖ
[in it]
وَإِنَّا
And indeed, we
لَصَـٰدِقُونَ
surely (are) truthful.'
٨٢
And ask the city in which we were and the caravan in which we came - and indeed, we are truthful.'"
12:83
قَالَ
He said
بَلۡ
Nay
سَوَّلَتۡ
have enticed
لَكُمۡ
you
أَنفُسُكُمۡ
your souls
أَمۡرًا‌ۖ
something
فَصَبۡرٌ
so patience
جَمِيلٌ‌ۖ
(is) beautiful
عَسَى
Perhaps
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
أَن
will bring them to me
يَأۡتِيَنِى
will bring them to me
بِهِمۡ
will bring them to me
جَمِيعًا‌ۚ
all
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, He
هُوَ
He
ٱلۡعَلِيمُ
(is) the All-Knower
ٱلۡحَكِيمُ
All-Wise
٨٣
[Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. Perhaps Allāh will bring them to me all together. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise."
12:84
وَتَوَلَّىٰ
And he turned away
عَنۡهُمۡ
from them
وَقَالَ
and said
يَـٰٓأَسَفَىٰ
Alas, my grief
عَلَىٰ
over
يُوسُفَ
Yusuf
وَٱبۡيَضَّتۡ
And became white
عَيۡنَاهُ
his eyes
مِنَ
from
ٱلۡحُزۡنِ
the grief
فَهُوَ
and he (was)
كَظِيمٌ
a suppressor
٨٤
And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white1 from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor.2
12:85
قَالُواۡ
They said
تَٱللَّهِ
By Allah
تَفۡتَؤُاۡ
you will not cease
تَذۡكُرُ
remembering
يُوسُفَ
Yusuf
حَتَّىٰ
until
تَكُونَ
you become
حَرَضًا
fatally ill
أَوۡ
or
تَكُونَ
become
مِنَ
of
ٱلۡهَـٰلِكِينَ
those who perish
٨٥
They said, "By Allāh, you will not cease remembering Joseph until you become fatally ill or become of those who perish."
12:86
قَالَ
He said
إِنَّمَآ
Only
أَشۡكُواۡ
I complain
بَثِّى
(of) my suffering
وَحُزۡنِىٓ
and my grief
إِلَى
to
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
وَأَعۡلَمُ
and I know
مِنَ
from
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
مَا
what
لَا
not
تَعۡلَمُونَ
you know
٨٦
He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allāh, and I know from Allāh that which you do not know.
12:87
يَـٰبَنِىَّ
O my sons
ٱذۡهَبُواۡ
Go
فَتَحَسَّسُواۡ
and inquire
مِن
about
يُوسُفَ
Yusuf
وَأَخِيهِ
and his brother
وَلَا
and not
تَاۡيۡــَٔسُواۡ
despair
مِن
of
رَّوۡحِ
(the) Mercy of Allah
ٱللَّهِ‌ۖ
(the) Mercy of Allah
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed
لَا
none
يَاۡيۡــَٔسُ

مِن
of
رَّوۡحِ
(the) Mercy of Allah
ٱللَّهِ
(the) Mercy of Allah
إِلَّا
except
ٱلۡقَوۡمُ
the people
ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ
the disbelievers
٨٧
O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allāh. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allāh except the disbelieving people."
12:88
فَلَمَّا
So when
دَخَلُواۡ
they entered
عَلَيۡهِ
upon him
قَالُواۡ
they said
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا
O Aziz
ٱلۡعَزِيزُ
O Aziz
مَسَّنَا
Has touched us
وَأَهۡلَنَا
and our family
ٱلضُّرُّ
the adversity
وَجِئۡنَا
and we have come
بِبِضَـٰعَةٍ
with goods
مُّزۡجَـٰةٍ
(of) little value
فَأَوۡفِ
but pay (in) full
لَنَا
to us
ٱلۡكَيۡلَ
the measure
وَتَصَدَّقۡ
and be charitable
عَلَيۡنَآ‌ۖ
to us
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
يَجۡزِى
rewards
ٱلۡمُتَصَدِّقِينَ
the charitable
٨٨
So when they entered upon him [i.e., Joseph], they said, "O ʿAzeez, adversity has touched us and our family, and we have come with goods poor in quality, but give us full measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allāh rewards the charitable."
12:89
قَالَ
He said
هَلۡ
Do
عَلِمۡتُم
you know
مَّا
what
فَعَلۡتُم
you did
بِيُوسُفَ
with Yusuf
وَأَخِيهِ
and his brother
إِذۡ
when
أَنتُمۡ
you were
جَـٰهِلُونَ
ignorant
٨٩
He said, "Do you know what you did with Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant?"
12:90
قَالُوٓاۡ
They said
أَءِنَّكَ
Are you indeed
لَأَنتَ
surely you
يُوسُفُ‌ۖ
Yusuf
قَالَ
He said
أَنَاۡ
I am
يُوسُفُ
Yusuf
وَهَـٰذَآ
and this
أَخِى‌ۖ
(is) my brother
قَدۡ
Indeed
مَنَّ
Allah has been gracious
ٱللَّهُ
Allah has been gracious
عَلَيۡنَآ‌ۖ
to us
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, he
مَن
who
يَتَّقِ
fears Allah
وَيَصۡبِرۡ
and (is) patient
فَإِنَّ
then indeed
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
لَا
(does) not
يُضِيعُ
let go waste
أَجۡرَ
(the) reward
ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ
(of) the good-doers
٩٠
They said, "Are you indeed Joseph?" He said, "I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allāh has certainly favored us. Indeed, he who fears Allāh and is patient, then indeed, Allāh does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good."
12:91
قَالُواۡ
They said
تَٱللَّهِ
By Allah
لَقَدۡ
certainly
ءَاثَرَكَ
Allah has preferred you
ٱللَّهُ
Allah has preferred you
عَلَيۡنَا
over us
وَإِن
and indeed
كُنَّا
we have been
لَخَـٰطِــِٔينَ
sinners
٩١
They said, "By Allāh, certainly has Allāh preferred you over us, and indeed, we have been sinners."
12:92
قَالَ
He said
لَا
No
تَثۡرِيبَ
blame
عَلَيۡكُمُ
upon you
ٱلۡيَوۡمَ‌ۖ
today
يَغۡفِرُ
Allah will forgive
ٱللَّهُ
Allah will forgive
لَكُمۡ‌ۖ
you
وَهُوَ
and He
أَرۡحَمُ
(is) the Most Merciful
ٱلرّٰحِمِينَ
(of) those who show mercy
٩٢
He said, "No blame will there be upon you today. May Allāh forgive you; and He is the most merciful of the merciful.
12:93
ٱذۡهَبُواۡ
Go
بِقَمِيصِى
with this shirt of mine
هَـٰذَا
with this shirt of mine
فَأَلۡقُوهُ
and cast it
عَلَىٰ
over
وَجۡهِ
(the) face
أَبِى
(of) my father
يَأۡتِ
he will regain sight
بَصِيرًا
he will regain sight
وَأۡتُونِى
And bring to me
بِأَهۡلِكُمۡ
your family
أَجۡمَعِينَ
all together
٩٣
Take this, my shirt, and cast it over the face of my father; he will become seeing. And bring me your family, all together."
12:94
وَلَمَّا
And when
فَصَلَتِ
departed
ٱلۡعِيرُ
the caravan
قَالَ
their father said
أَبُوهُمۡ
their father said
إِنِّى
Indeed, I
لَأَجِدُ
[I] find
رِيحَ
(the) smell
يُوسُفَ‌ۖ
(of) Yusuf
لَوۡلَآ
if not
أَن
that
تُفَنِّدُونِ
you think me weakened in mind
٩٤
And when the caravan departed [from Egypt], their father said,1 "Indeed, I find the smell of Joseph [and would say that he was alive] if you did not think me weakened in mind."
12:95
قَالُواۡ
They said
تَٱللَّهِ
By Allah
إِنَّكَ
indeed, you
لَفِى
surely (are) in
ضَلَـٰلِكَ
your error
ٱلۡقَدِيمِ
old
٩٥
They said, "By Allāh, indeed you are in your [same] old error."
12:96
فَلَمَّآ
Then when
أَن
[that]
جَآءَ
arrived
ٱلۡبَشِيرُ
the bearer of glad tidings
أَلۡقَـٰهُ
he cast it
عَلَىٰ
over
وَجۡهِهِۦ
his face
فَٱرۡتَدَّ
then returned (his) sight
بَصِيرًا‌ۖ
then returned (his) sight
قَالَ
He said
أَلَمۡ
Did not
أَقُل
I say
لَّكُمۡ
to you
إِنِّىٓ
indeed, I
أَعۡلَمُ
[I] know
مِنَ
from
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
مَا
what
لَا
not
تَعۡلَمُونَ
you know
٩٦
And when the bearer of good tidings1 arrived, he cast it over his face, and he returned [once again] seeing. He said, "Did I not tell you that I know from Allāh that which you do not know?"
12:97
قَالُواۡ
They said
يَـٰٓأَبَانَا
O our father
ٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡ
Ask forgiveness
لَنَا
for us
ذُنُوبَنَآ
(of) our sins
إِنَّا
Indeed, we
كُنَّا
have been
خَـٰطِــِٔينَ
sinners
٩٧
They said, "O our father, ask for us forgiveness of our sins; indeed, we have been sinners."
12:98
قَالَ
He said
سَوۡفَ
Soon
أَسۡتَغۡفِرُ
I will ask forgiveness
لَكُمۡ
for you
رَبِّىٓ‌ۖ
(from) my Lord
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, He
هُوَ
He
ٱلۡغَفُورُ
(is) the Oft-Forgiving
ٱلرَّحِيمُ
the Most Merciful
٩٨
He said, "I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
12:99
فَلَمَّا
Then when
دَخَلُواۡ
they entered
عَلَىٰ
upon
يُوسُفَ
Yusuf
ءَاوَىٰٓ
he took
إِلَيۡهِ
to himself
أَبَوَيۡهِ
his parents
وَقَالَ
and said
ٱدۡخُلُواۡ
Enter
مِصۡرَ
Egypt
إِن
if
شَآءَ
Allah wills
ٱللَّهُ
Allah wills
ءَامِنِينَ
safe
٩٩
And when they entered upon Joseph, he took his parents to himself [i.e., embraced them] and said, "Enter Egypt, Allāh willing, safe [and secure]."
12:100
وَرَفَعَ
And he raised
أَبَوَيۡهِ
his parents
عَلَى
upon
ٱلۡعَرۡشِ
the throne
وَخَرُّواۡ
and they fell down
لَهُۥ
to him
سُجَّدًا‌ۖ
prostrate
وَقَالَ
And he said
يَـٰٓأَبَتِ
O my father

And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they bowed to him in prostration.1 And he said, "O my father, this is the explanation of my vision of before. My Lord has made it reality. And He was certainly good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you [here] from bedouin life after Satan had induced [estrangement] between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is Subtle2 in what He wills. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise.

١٠١
My Lord, You have given me [something] of sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and earth, You are my protector in this world and the Hereafter. Cause me to die a Muslim and join me with the righteous."
12:102
ذٰلِكَ

they put together

their plan

while they
يَمۡكُرُونَ

١٠٢
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal, [O Muḥammad], to you. And you were not with them when they put together their plan while they conspired.

١٠٥
And how many a sign within the heavens and earth do they pass over while they, therefrom, are turning away.

١٠٦
And most of them believe not in Allāh except while they associate others with Him.
12:107
أَفَأَمِنُوٓاۡ
Do they then feel secure
أَن
(against) that
تَأۡتِيَهُمۡ

the Hour
بَغۡتَةً
suddenly

while they
لَا

يَشۡعُرُونَ
perceive
١٠٧
Then do they feel secure that there will not come to them an overwhelming [aspect] of the punishment of Allāh or that the Hour will not come upon them suddenly while they do not perceive?
12:108
قُلۡ
Say
هَـٰذِهِۦ
This

ٱلۡأَخِرَةِ

for those who
ٱتَّقَوۡاۡ‌ۗ
fear Allah
أَفَلَا
Then will not
تَعۡقِلُونَ
you use reason
١٠٩
And We sent not before you [as messengers] except men to whom We revealed from among the people of cities. So have they1 not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? And the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allāh; then will you not reason?
12:110
حَتَّىٰٓ
Until
إِذَا

that they
قَدۡ
certainly
كُذِبُواۡ
were denied
جَآءَهُمۡ
then came to them
نَصۡرُنَا
Our help

بَأۡسُنَا
Our punishment

ٱلۡقَوۡمِ
the people
ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ
(who are) criminals
١١٠
[They continued] until, when the messengers despaired and were certain that they had been denied, there came to them Our victory, and whoever We willed was saved. And Our punishment cannot be repelled from the people who are criminals.
12:111
لَقَدۡ
Verily
كَانَ
(there) is
فِى
in
قَصَصِهِمۡ
their stories
عِبۡرَةٌ
a lesson

for men
ٱلۡأَلۡبَـٰبِ‌ۗ
(of) understanding
مَا
Not
كَانَ
(it) is
حَدِيثًا

a confirmation
ٱلَّذِى

وَتَفۡصِيلَ
and a detailed explanation

things
وَهُدًى
and a guidance
وَرَحۡمَةً
and mercy
لِّقَوۡمٍ
for a people
يُؤۡمِنُونَ
who believe
١١١
There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was it [i.e., the Qur’ān] a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.
