These
ءَايَـٰ تُ
(are the) Verses
(of) the Book
the clear
These are verses of the clear Book.
28:3
نَتۡلُواۡ
We recite
عَلَيۡكَ
to you
مِن
from
(the) news
مُوسَىٰ
(of) Musa
وَفِرۡعَوۡنَ
and Firaun
بِٱ لۡحَقِّ
in truth
لِقَوۡمٍ
for a people
who believe
We recite to you from the news of Moses and Pharaoh in truth for a people who believe.
28:4
إِنّ َ
Indeed
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
Firaun
عَلَا
exalted himself
فِى
in
the land
وَجَعَلَ
and made
أَهۡلَهَا
its people
شِيَعًا
(into) sects
oppressing
طَا ٓئِفَةً
a group
among them
يُذَبِّحُ
slaughtering
أَبۡ نَا ٓءَهُمۡ
their sons
وَيَسۡتَحۡىِۦ
and letting live
نِسَا ٓءَهُمۡۚ
their women
إِنّ َهُۥ
Indeed, he
كَانَ
was
مِنَ
of
the corrupters
Indeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and made its people into factions, oppressing a sector among them, slaughtering their [newborn] sons and keeping their females alive. Indeed, he was of the corrupters.
28:5
وَنُرِيدُ
And We wanted
أَن
to
bestow a favor
عَلَى
upon
those who
were oppressed
فِى
in
the land
وَنَجۡ عَلَهُمۡ
and make them
أَئِمّ َةً
leaders
and make them
the inheritors
And We wanted to confer favor upon those who were oppressed in the land and make them leaders and make them inheritors
28:6
وَنُمَكِّنَ
And [We] establish
لَهُمۡ
them
فِى
in
the land
وَنُرِىَ
and show
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
Firaun
وَهَـٰ مَـٰ نَ
and Haman
وَجُنُودَهُمَا
and their hosts
مِنۡهُم
through them
what
كَانُواۡ
they were
يَحۡذَرُو نَ
٦fearing
And establish them in the land and show Pharaoh and [his minister] Hāmān and their soldiers through them1 that which they had feared.
28:7
وَأَوۡحَيۡنَآ
And We inspired
إِلَىٰٓ
[to]
أُمّ ِ
(the) mother
مُوسَىٰٓ
(of) Musa
أَنۡ
that
أَرۡضِعِيهِۖ
Suckle him
فَإِذَا
but when
خِفۡتِ
you fear
عَلَيۡهِ
for him
فَأَلۡقِيهِ
then cast him
فِى
in(to)
the river
وَلَا
and (do) not
تَخَافِى
fear
وَلَا
and (do) not
تَحۡزَنِىٓۖ
grieve
إِنّ َا
Indeed, We
رَا ٓدُّوهُ
(will) restore him
إِلَيۡكِ
to you
وَجَاعِلُوهُ
and (will) make him
مِنَ
of
the Messengers
And We inspired to the mother of Moses, "Suckle him; but when you fear for him, cast him into the river and do not fear and do not grieve. Indeed, We will return him to you and will make him [one] of the messengers."
28:8
فَٱ لۡتَقَطَهُۥٓ
Then picked him up
ءَالُ
(the) family
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
(of) Firaun
لِيَكُونَ
so that he might become
لَهُمۡ
to them
عَدُوًّا
an enemy
and a grief
إِنّ َ
Indeed
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
Firaun
وَهَـٰ مَـٰ نَ
and Haman
وَجُنُودَهُمَا
and their hosts
كَانُواۡ
were
خَـٰ طِــِٔي نَ
٨sinners
And the family of Pharaoh picked him up [out of the river] so that he would become to them an enemy and a [cause of] grief. Indeed, Pharaoh and Hāmān and their soldiers were deliberate sinners.
28:9
وَقَالَتِ
And said
(the) wife
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
(of) Firaun
قُرَّتُ
A comfort
عَيۡنٍ
(of the) eye
for me
وَلَكَۖ
and for you
لَا
(Do) not
تَقۡ تُلُوهُ
kill him
عَسَىٰٓ
perhaps
أَن
(that)
he may benefit us
أَوۡ
or
نَتَّخِذَهُۥ
we may take him
وَلَدًا
(as) a son
And they
لَا
(did) not
يَشۡعُرُو نَ
٩perceive
And the wife of Pharaoh said, "[He will be] a comfort of the eye [i.e., pleasure] for me and for you. Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us, or we may adopt him as a son." And they perceived not.1
28:10
وَأَصۡبَحَ
And became
فُؤَادُ
(the) heart
أُمّ ِ
(of the) mother
مُوسَىٰ
(of) Musa
فَـٰ رِغًاۖ
empty
إِن
That
she was near
لَتُبۡ دِى
(to) disclosing
بِهِۦ
about him
لَوۡلَآ
if not
أَن
that
We strengthened
عَلَىٰ
[over]
قَلۡبِهَا
her heart
لِتَكُونَ
so that she would be
مِنَ
of
the believers
And the heart of Moses' mother became empty [of all else]. She was about to disclose [the matter concerning] him had We not bound fast her heart that she would be of the believers.
28:11
وَقَالَتۡ
And she said
لِأُخۡتِهِۦ
to his sister
قُصِّيهِۖ
Follow him
فَبَصُرَتۡ
So she watched
بِهِۦ
him
عَن
from
a distance
while they
لَا
(did) not
يَشۡعُرُو نَ
١١perceive
And she said to his sister, "Follow him"; so she watched him from a distance while they perceived not.
28:12
۞وَحَرَّمۡنَا
And We had forbidden
عَلَيۡهِ
for him
the wet nurses
مِن
before
before
فَقَالَتۡ
so she said
هَلۡ
Shall I
أَدُلُّكُمۡ
direct you
عَلَىٰٓ
to
أَهۡلِ
(the) people
بَيۡتٍ
(of) a house
who will rear him
لَكُمۡ
for you
وَهُمۡ
while they
لَهُۥ
to him
نَـٰ صِحُو نَ
١٢(will be) sincere
And We had prevented from him [all] wet nurses before,1 so she said, "Shall I direct you to a household that will be responsible for him for you while they are to him [for his upbringing] sincere?"
28:13
فَرَدَدۡ نَـٰ هُ
So We restored him
إِلَىٰٓ
to
أُمّ ِهِۦ
his mother
كَىۡ
that
تَقَرَّ
might be comforted
عَيۡنُهَا
her eye
وَلَا
and not
تَحۡزَنَ
she may grieve
وَلِتَعۡلَمَ
and that she would know
أَنّ َ
that
وَعۡدَ
the Promise of Allah
the Promise of Allah
حَقٌّ
(is) true
But
أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ
most of them
لَا
(do) not
يَعۡلَمُو نَ
١٣know
So We restored him to his mother that she might be content and not grieve and that she would know that the promise of Allāh is true. But most of them [i.e., the people] do not know.
28:14
وَلَمّ َا
And when
بَلَغَ
he reached
أَشُدَّهُۥ
his full strength
وَٱ سۡتَوَىٰٓ
and became mature
ءَاتَيۡنَـٰ هُ
We bestowed upon him
حُكۡمًا
wisdom
and knowledge
And thus
نَجۡ زِى
We reward
the good-doers
And when he attained his full strength and was [mentally] mature, We bestowed upon him judgement and knowledge. And thus do We reward the doers of good.
28:15
وَدَخَلَ
And he entered
the city
عَلَىٰ
at
حِينِ
a time
غَفۡلَةٍ
(of) inattention
of
أَهۡلِهَا
its people
فَوَجَدَ
and found
فِيهَا
therein
رَجُلَيۡنِ
two men
يَقۡ تَتِلَانِ
fighting each other
هَـٰ ذَا
this
مِن
of
his party
وَهَـٰ ذَا
and this
مِنۡ
of
عَدُوِّهِۦ ۖ
his enemy
فَٱ سۡتَغَـٰ ثَهُ
And called him for help
the one who
مِن
(was) from
his party
عَلَى
against
the one who
مِنۡ
(was) from
عَدُوِّهِۦ
his enemy
فَوَكَزَهُۥ
so Musa struck him with his fist
مُوسَىٰ
so Musa struck him with his fist
فَقَضَىٰ
and killed him
عَلَيۡهِۖ
and killed him
قَالَ
He said
هَـٰ ذَا
This (is)
مِنۡ
of
عَمَلِ
(the) deed
(of) Shaitaan
إِنّ َهُۥ
Indeed, he
عَدُوٌّ
(is) an enemy
one who misleads
clearly
And he entered the city at a time of inattention by its people1 and found therein two men fighting: one from his faction and one from among his enemy. And the one from his faction called for help to him against the one from his enemy, so Moses struck him and [unintentionally] killed him. [Moses] said, "This is from the work of Satan. Indeed, he is a manifest, misleading enemy."
28:16
قَالَ
He said
رَبِّ
My Lord
إِنّ ِى
Indeed, I
ظَلَمۡتُ
[I] have wronged
نَفۡسِى
my soul
فَٱ غۡفِرۡ
so forgive
لِى
[for] me
فَغَفَرَ
Then He forgave
لَهُۥٓۚ
[for] him
إِنّ َهُۥ
Indeed He
هُوَ
He (is)
the Oft-Forgiving
the Most Merciful
He said, "My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me," and He forgave him. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
28:17
قَالَ
He said
رَبِّ
My Lord
بِمَآ
Because
أَنۡعَمۡتَ
You have favored
عَلَىَّ
[on] me
فَلَنۡ
so not
أَكُونَ
I will be
ظَهِيرًا
a supporter
(of) the criminals
He said, "My Lord, for the favor You bestowed upon me, I will never be an assistant to the criminals."
28:18
فَأَصۡبَحَ
In the morning he was
فِى
in
the city
خَا ٓئِفًا
fearful
(and) was vigilant
فَإِذَا
when behold
The one who
sought his help
بِٱ لۡأَمۡسِ
the previous day
يَسۡتَصۡرِخُهُۥ ۚ
cried out to him for help
قَالَ
Said
لَهُۥ
to him
مُوسَىٰٓ
Musa
إِنّ َكَ
Indeed, you
لَغَوِىٌّ
(are) surely a deviator
clear
And he became inside the city fearful and anticipating [exposure], when suddenly the one who sought his help the previous day cried out to him [once again]. Moses said to him, "Indeed, you are an evident, [persistent] deviator."
28:19
فَلَمّ َآ
Then when
أَنۡ
[that]
أَرَادَ
he wanted
أَن
to
strike
بِٱ لَّذِى
the one who
هُوَ
[he] (was)
عَدُوٌّ
an enemy
to both of them
قَالَ
he said
يَـٰ مُوسَىٰٓ
O Musa
أَتُرِيدُ
Do you intend
أَن
to
kill me
كَمَا
as
قَتَلۡتَ
you killed
نَفۡسَۢا
a person
yesterday
إِن
Not
you want
إِلَّآ
but
أَن
that
you become
جَبَّارًا
a tyrant
in
the earth
وَمَا
and not
تُرِيدُ
you want
أَن
that
you be
مِنَ
of
the reformers
And when he wanted to strike the one who was an enemy to both of them, he1 said, "O Moses, do you intend to kill me as you killed someone yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land and do not want to be of the amenders."
28:20
وَجَا ٓءَ
And came
رَجُلٌ
a man
from
أَقۡ صَا
(the) farthest end
(of) the city
يَسۡعَىٰ
running
قَالَ
He said
يَـٰ مُوسَىٰٓ
O Musa
إِنّ َ
Indeed
the chiefs
يَأۡتَمِرُونَ
are taking counsel
بِكَ
about you
لِيَقۡ تُلُوكَ
to kill you
فَٱ خۡرُجۡ
so leave
إِنّ ِى
indeed, I am
لَكَ
to you
مِنَ
of
the sincere advisors
And a man came from the farthest end of the city, running. He said, "O Moses, indeed the eminent ones are conferring over you [intending] to kill you, so leave [the city]; indeed, I am to you of the sincere advisors."
28:21
فَخَرَجَ
So he left
مِنۡهَا
from it
خَا ٓئِفًا
fearing
(and) vigilant
قَالَ
He said
رَبِّ
My Lord
نَجِّنِى
Save me
مِنَ
from
the people
the wrongdoers
So he left it, fearful and anticipating [apprehension]. He said, "My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people."
28:22
وَلَمّ َا
And when
تَوَجَّهَ
he turned his face
تِلۡقَا ٓءَ
towards
مَدۡ يَنَ
Madyan
قَالَ
he said
عَسَىٰ
Perhaps
رَبِّىٓ
my Lord
أَن
[that]
will guide me
سَوَا ٓءَ
(to the) sound
way
And when he directed himself toward Madyan, he said, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the sound way."
28:23
وَلَمّ َا
And when
وَرَدَ
he came
مَا ٓءَ
(to the) water
مَدۡ يَنَ
(of) Madyan
وَجَدَ
he found
عَلَيۡهِ
on it
أُمّ َةً
a group
of
men
يَسۡقُونَ
watering
وَوَجَدَ
and he found
مِن
besides them
besides them
two women
تَذُودَانِۖ
keeping back
قَالَ
He said
مَا
What
خَطۡ بُكُمَاۖ
(is the) matter with both of you
قَالَتَا
They said
لَا
We cannot water
نَسۡقِى
We cannot water
حَتَّىٰ
until
يُصۡدِرَ
take away
the shepherds
وَأَبُونَا
and our father
شَيۡخٌ
(is) a very old man
(is) a very old man
And when he came to the water [i.e., well] of Madyan, he found there a crowd of people watering [their flocks], and he found aside from them two women holding back [their flocks]. He said, "What is your circumstance?" They said, "We do not water until the shepherds dispatch [their flocks]; and our father is an old man."
28:24
فَسَقَىٰ
So he watered
لَهُمَا
for them
ثُمّ َ
Then
تَوَلَّىٰٓ
he turned back
إِلَى
to
the shade
فَقَالَ
and said
رَبِّ

أَنز َلۡتَ
You send

(in) need
So he watered [their flocks] for them; then he went back to the shade and said, "My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need."
28:25
فَجَا ٓءَتۡهُ
Then came to him
إِحۡدَٮٰ هُمَا
one of the two women

She said

he said

You have escaped

the wrongdoers
Then one of the two women came to him walking with shyness. She said, "Indeed, my father invites you that he may reward you for having watered for us." So when he came to him1 and related to him the story, he said, "Fear not. You have escaped from the wrongdoing people."

One of the women said, "O my father, hire him. Indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and the trustworthy."

He said, "Indeed, I wish to wed you one of these, my two daughters, on [the condition] that you serve me for eight years; but if you complete ten, it will be [as a favor] from you. And I do not wish to put you in difficulty. You will find me, if Allāh wills, from among the righteous."
28:28

He said

[Moses] said, "That is [established] between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I complete - there is no injustice to me, and Allāh, over what we say, is Witness."
28:29

He said

Stay here

And when Moses had completed the term and was traveling with his family, he perceived from the direction of the mount a fire. He said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire. Perhaps I will bring you from there [some] information or burning wood from the fire that you may warm yourselves."

And he was arrogant, he and his soldiers, in the land, without right, and they thought that they would not be returned to Us.
28:40

And We caused to overtake them in this world a curse, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be of the despised.1
28:43

٤٣remember
And We gave Moses the Scripture, after We had destroyed the former generations, as enlightenment for the people and guidance and mercy that they might be reminded.
28:44

But We produced [many] generations [after Moses], and prolonged was their duration.1 And you were not a resident among the people of Madyan, reciting to them Our verses, but We were senders [of this message].2
28:46

And you were not at the side of the mount when We called [Moses] but [were sent] as a mercy from your Lord to warn a people to whom no warner had come before you that they might be reminded.
28:47
