68:28
قَالَ
Said
أَوۡسَطُهُمۡ
(the) most moderate of them

Did not
أَقُل
I tell
لَّكُمۡ
you

قَالُواۡ
They said
سُبۡ حَـٰ نَ

كُنّ َا
[we] were
طَـٰ غِي نَ
٣١transgressors
They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.
68:32
عَسَىٰ
Perhaps
رَبُّنَآ
our Lord
أَن
[that]
will substitute for us
خَيۡرًا
a better
than it
إِنّ َآ
Indeed, we
إِلَىٰ
to
رَبِّنَا
our Lord
رٰ غِبُو نَ
٣٢turn devoutly
Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous."1

كَذٰ لِكَ
Such
(is) the punishment
وَلَعَذَابُ
And surely the punishment

they
يَعۡلَمُو نَ
٣٣know

لَكُمۡ
(is) for you
كَيۡفَ
How
تَحۡكُمُو نَ
٣٦(do) you judge
What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?
68:37
أَمۡ
Or
لَكُمۡ
(is) for you
كِتَـٰ بٌ
a book
wherein
تَدۡ رُسُو نَ
٣٧you learn
Or do you have a scripture in which you learn
68:38
إِنّ َ
Indeed
لَكُمۡ
for you
فِيهِ
in it
لَمَا
what
تَخَيَّرُو نَ
٣٨you choose
That indeed for you is whatever you choose?
68:39
أَمۡ
Or
لَكُمۡ
for you
أَيۡمَـٰ نٌ
oaths
عَلَيۡنَا
from us
بَـٰ لِغَةٌ
reaching
إِلَىٰ
to
يَوۡمِ
(the) Day
(of) the Resurrection
إِنّ َ
indeed
لَكُمۡ
for you
لَمَا
(is) what
تَحۡكُمُو نَ
٣٩you judge
Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?
68:40
سَلۡهُمۡ
Ask them
أَيُّهُم
which of them
for that
زَعِي مٌ
٤٠(is) responsible
Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.
68:41
أَمۡ
Or
لَهُمۡ
(are) for them
شُرَكَا ٓءُ
partners
فَلۡيَأۡتُواۡ
Then let them bring
بِشُرَكَا ٓئِهِمۡ
their partners
إِن
if
they are
صَـٰ دِقِي نَ
٤١truthful
Or do they have partners?1 Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful.
68:42
يَوۡمَ
(The) Day
يُكۡشَفُ
will be uncovered
عَن
from
the shin
and they will be called
إِلَى
to
prostrate
فَلَا
but not
يَسۡتَطِيعُو نَ
٤٢they will be able
The Day the shin will be uncovered1 and they are invited to prostration but they [i.e., the disbelievers] will not be able,
68:43
خَـٰ شِعَةً
Humbled
أَبۡ صَـٰ رُهُمۡ
their eyes
تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ
will cover them
ذِلَّةٌۖ
humiliation
And indeed
كَانُواۡ
they were
يُدۡ عَوۡنَ
called
إِلَى
to
prostrate
وَهُمۡ
while they
سَـٰ لِمُو نَ
٤٣(were) sound
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.1
68:44
فَذَرۡنِى
So leave Me
وَمَن
and whoever
denies
بِهَـٰ ذَا
this
Statement
سَنَسۡتَدۡ رِجُهُم
We will progressively lead them
from
حَيۡثُ
where
لَا
not
يَعۡلَمُو نَ
٤٤they know
So leave Me, [O Muḥammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies this statement [i.e., the Qur’ān]. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know.1
68:45
وَأُمۡلِى
And I will give respite
لَهُمۡۚ
to them
إِنّ َ
Indeed
كَيۡدِى
My plan
مَتِي نٌ
٤٥(is) firm
And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.
68:46
أَمۡ
Or
تَسۡــَٔلُهُمۡ
you ask them
أَجۡ رًا
a payment
so they
from
(the) debt
(are) burdened
Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?
68:47
أَمۡ
Or
عِند َهُمُ
(is) with them
the unseen
فَهُمۡ
so they
يَكۡتُبُو نَ
٤٧write it
Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?
68:48
فَٱ صۡبِرۡ
So be patient
لِحُكۡمِ
for (the) decision
رَبِّكَ
(of) your Lord
وَلَا
and (do) not
تَكُن
be
like (the) companion
(of) the fish
إِذۡ
when
نَادَىٰ
he called out
وَهُوَ
while he
مَكۡظُو مٌ
٤٨(was) distressed
Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muḥammad], and be not like the companion of the fish [i.e., Jonah] when he called out while he was distressed.
68:49
لَّوۡلَآ
If not
أَن
that
overtook him
نِعۡمَةٌ
a Favor
from
his Lord
لَنُبِذَ
surely he would have been thrown
بِٱ لۡعَرَا ٓءِ
onto (the) naked shore
وَهُوَ
while he
مَذۡمُو مٌ
٤٩(was) blamed
If not that a favor [i.e., mercy] from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.1
68:50
فَٱ جۡ تَبَـٰ هُ
But chose him
رَبُّهُۥ
his Lord
فَجَعَلَهُۥ
and made him
مِنَ
of
the righteous
And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.
68:51
وَإِن
And indeed
would almost
those who
كَفَرُواۡ
disbelieve
لَيُزۡلِقُونَكَ
surely make you slip
بِأَبۡ صَـٰ رِهِمۡ
with their look
لَمّ َا
when
سَمِعُواۡ
they hear
the Message
وَيَقُولُونَ
and they say
إِنّ َهُۥ
Indeed, he
لَمَجۡ نُو نٌ
٥١(is) surely mad
And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes [i.e., looks] when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."
68:52
وَمَا
And not
هُوَ
it (is)
إِلَّا
but
ذِكۡرٌ
a Reminder
to the worlds
But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.
