The Cave110 Verses26 Hadithsmakkah

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

18:1
ٱلۡحَمۡدُ
All Praise
لِلَّهِ
(is) for Allah
ٱلَّذِىٓ
the One Who
أَنزَلَ
(has) revealed
عَلَىٰ
to
عَبۡدِهِ
His slave
ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ
the Book
وَلَمۡ
and not
يَجۡعَل
(has) made
لَّهُۥ
in it
عِوَجَاۜ
any crookedness
١
[All] praise is [due] to Allāh, who has sent down upon His Servant [Muḥammad (ﷺ)] the Book and has not made therein any deviance.1
18:2
قَيِّمًا
Straight
لِّيُنذِرَ
to warn
بَأۡسًا
(of) a punishment
شَدِيدًا
severe
مِّن
from
لَّدُنۡهُ
near Him
وَيُبَشِّرَ
and give glad tidings
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
(to) the believers
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
يَعۡمَلُونَ
do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ
righteous deeds
أَنَّ
that
لَهُمۡ
for them
أَجۡرًا
(is) a good reward
حَسَنًا
(is) a good reward
٢
[He has made it] straight, to warn of severe punishment from Him and to give good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a good reward [i.e., Paradise].
18:3
مَّـٰكِثِينَ
(They will) abide
فِيهِ
in it
أَبَدًا
forever
٣
In which they will remain forever
18:4
وَيُنذِرَ
And to warn
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
قَالُواۡ
say
ٱتَّخَذَ
Allah has taken
ٱللَّهُ
Allah has taken
وَلَدًا
a son
٤
And to warn those who say, "Allāh has taken a son".
18:5
مَّا
Not
لَهُم
they have
بِهِۦ
about it
مِنۡ
any
عِلۡمٍ
knowledge
وَلَا
and not
لِأَبَآئِهِمۡ‌ۚ
their forefathers
كَبُرَتۡ
Grave (is)
كَلِمَةً
the word
تَخۡرُجُ
(that) comes out
مِنۡ
of
أَفۡوٰهِهِمۡ‌ۚ
their mouths
إِن
Not
يَقُولُونَ
they say
إِلَّا
except
كَذِبًا
a lie
٥
They have no knowledge of it,1 nor had their fathers. Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths; they speak not except a lie.
18:6
فَلَعَلَّكَ
Then perhaps you would (be)
بَـٰخِعٌ
the one who kills
نَّفۡسَكَ
yourself
عَلَىٰٓ
over
ءَاثَـٰرِهِمۡ
their footsteps
إِن
if
لَّمۡ
not
يُؤۡمِنُواۡ
they believe
بِهَـٰذَا
in this
ٱلۡحَدِيثِ
[the] narration
أَسَفًا
(in) grief
٦
Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muḥammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow.
18:7
إِنَّا
Indeed, We
جَعَلۡنَا
We have made
مَا
what
عَلَى
(is) on
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
the earth
زِينَةً
adornment
لَّهَا
for it
لِنَبۡلُوَهُمۡ
that We may test [them]
أَيُّهُمۡ
which of them
أَحۡسَنُ
(is) best
عَمَلاً
(in) deed
٧
Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed.
18:8
وَإِنَّا
And indeed, We
لَجَـٰعِلُونَ
(will) surely make
مَا
what
عَلَيۡهَا
(is) on it
صَعِيدًا
soil
جُرُزًا
barren
٨
And indeed, We will make that which is upon it [into] a barren ground.
18:9
أَمۡ
Or
حَسِبۡتَ
have you thought
أَنَّ
that
أَصۡحَـٰبَ
(the) companions
ٱلۡكَهۡفِ
(of) the cave
وَٱلرَّقِيمِ
and the inscription
كَانُواۡ
were
مِنۡ
among
ءَايَـٰتِنَا
Our Signs
عَجَبًا
a wonder
٩
Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder?1
18:10
إِذۡ
When
أَوَى
retreated
ٱلۡفِتۡيَةُ
the youths
إِلَى
to
ٱلۡكَهۡفِ
the cave
فَقَالُواۡ
and they said
رَبَّنَآ
Our Lord
ءَاتِنَا
Grant us
مِن
from
لَّدُنكَ
Yourself
رَحۡمَةً
Mercy
وَهَيِّئۡ
and facilitate
لَنَا
for us
مِنۡ
[from]
أَمۡرِنَا
our affair
رَشَدًا
(in the) right way
١٠
[Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance."
18:11
فَضَرَبۡنَا
So We cast
عَلَىٰٓ
over
ءَاذَانِهِمۡ
their ears
فِى
in
ٱلۡكَهۡفِ
the cave
سِنِينَ
years
عَدَدًا
a number
١١
So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years.
18:12
ثُمَّ
Then
بَعَثۡنَـٰهُمۡ
We raised them up
لِنَعۡلَمَ
that We make evident
أَىُّ
which
ٱلۡحِزۡبَيۡنِ
(of) the two parties
أَحۡصَىٰ
best calculated
لِمَا
for what
لَبِثُوٓاۡ
(they had) remained
أَمَدًا
(in) time
١٢
Then We awakened them that We might show which of the two factions was most precise in calculating what [extent] they had remained in time.
18:13
نَّحۡنُ
We
نَقُصُّ
narrate
عَلَيۡكَ
to you
نَبَأَهُم
their story
بِٱلۡحَقِّ‌ۚ
in truth
إِنَّهُمۡ
Indeed, they (were)
فِتۡيَةٌ
youths
ءَامَنُواۡ
who believed
بِرَبِّهِمۡ
in their Lord
وَزِدۡنَـٰهُمۡ
and We increased them
هُدًى
(in) guidance
١٣
It is We who relate to you, [O Muḥammad], their story in truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.
18:14
وَرَبَطۡنَا
And We made firm
عَلَىٰ
[on]
قُلُوبِهِمۡ
their hearts
إِذۡ
when
قَامُواۡ
they stood up
فَقَالُواۡ
and said
رَبُّنَا
Our Lord
رَبُّ
(is) the Lord
ٱلسَّمَـٰوٰتِ
(of) the heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ
and the earth
لَن
Never
نَّدۡعُوَاۡ
we will invoke
مِن
besides Him
دُونِهِۦٓ
besides Him
إِلَـٰهًا‌ۖ
any god
لَّقَدۡ
Certainly
قُلۡنَآ
we would have said
إِذًا
then
شَطَطًا
an enormity
١٤
And We bound [i.e., made firm] their hearts when they stood up and said, "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken, then, an excessive transgression.
18:15
هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ
These
قَوۡمُنَا
our people
ٱتَّخَذُواۡ
have taken
مِن
besides Him
دُونِهِۦٓ
besides Him
ءَالِهَةً‌ۖ
gods
لَّوۡلَا
Why not
يَأۡتُونَ
they come
عَلَيۡهِم
to them
بِسُلۡطَـٰنِۭ
with an authority
بَيِّنٍ‌ۖ
clear
فَمَنۡ
And who
أَظۡلَمُ
(is) more wrong
مِمَّنِ
than (one) who
ٱفۡتَرَىٰ
invents
عَلَى
against
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
كَذِبًا
a lie
١٥
These, our people, have taken besides Him deities. Why do they not bring for [worship of] them a clear evidence? And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allāh a lie?"
18:16
وَإِذِ
And when
ٱعۡتَزَلۡتُمُوهُمۡ
you withdraw from them
وَمَا
and what
يَعۡبُدُونَ
they worship
إِلَّا
except
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
فَأۡوُۥٓاۡ
then retreat
إِلَى
to
ٱلۡكَهۡفِ
the cave
يَنشُرۡ
Will spread
لَكُمۡ
for you
رَبُّكُم
your Lord
مِّن
of
رَّحۡمَتِهِۦ
His Mercy
وَيُهَيِّئۡ
and will facilitate
لَكُم
for you
مِّنۡ
[from]
أَمۡرِكُم
your affair
مِّرۡفَقًا
(in) ease
١٦
[The youths said to one another], "And when you have withdrawn from them and that which they worship other than Allāh, retreat to the cave. Your Lord will spread out for you of His mercy and will prepare for you from your affair facility."
18:17
۞وَتَرَى
And you (might) have seen
ٱلشَّمۡسَ
the sun
إِذَا
when
طَلَعَت
it rose
تَّزٰوَرُ
inclining away
عَن
from
كَهۡفِهِمۡ
their cave
ذَاتَ
to
ٱلۡيَمِينِ
the right
وَإِذَا
and when
غَرَبَت
it set
تَّقۡرِضُهُمۡ
passing away from them
ذَاتَ
to
ٱلشِّمَالِ
the left
وَهُمۡ
while they
فِى
(lay) in
فَجۡوَةٍ
the open space
مِّنۡهُ‌ۚ
thereof
ذٰلِكَ
That
مِنۡ
(was) from
ءَايَـٰتِ
(the) Signs
ٱللَّهِ‌ۗ
(of) Allah
مَن
Whoever
يَهۡدِ
Allah guides
ٱللَّهُ
Allah guides
فَهُوَ
and he
ٱلۡمُهۡتَدِ‌ۖ
(is) the guided one
وَمَن
and whoever
يُضۡلِلۡ
He lets go astray
فَلَن
then never
تَجِدَ
you will find
لَهُۥ
for him
وَلِيًّا
a protector
مُّرۡشِدًا
a guide
١٧
And [had you been present], you would see the sun when it rose, inclining away from their cave on the right, and when it set, passing away from them on the left, while they were [lying] within an open space thereof. That was from the signs of Allāh. He whom Allāh guides is the [rightly] guided, but he whom He sends astray - never will you find for him a protecting guide.
18:18
وَتَحۡسَبُهُمۡ
And you (would) think them
أَيۡقَاظًا
awake
وَهُمۡ
while they
رُقُودٌ‌ۚ
(were) asleep
وَنُقَلِّبُهُمۡ
And We turned them
ذَاتَ
to
ٱلۡيَمِينِ
the right
وَذَاتَ
and to
ٱلشِّمَالِ‌ۖ
the left
وَكَلۡبُهُم
while their dog
بَـٰسِطٌ
stretched
ذِرَاعَيۡهِ
his two forelegs
بِٱلۡوَصِيدِ‌ۚ
at the entrance
لَوِ
If
ٱطَّلَعۡتَ
you had looked
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
at them
لَوَلَّيۡتَ
you (would) have surely turned back
مِنۡهُمۡ
from them
فِرَارًا
(in) flight
وَلَمُلِئۡتَ
and surely you would have been filled
مِنۡهُمۡ
by them
رُعۡبًا
(with) terror
١٨
And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror.
18:19
وَكَذٰلِكَ
And similarly
بَعَثۡنَـٰهُمۡ
We raised them
لِيَتَسَآءَلُواۡ
that they might question
بَيۡنَهُمۡ‌ۚ
among them
قَالَ
Said
قَآئِلٌ
a speaker
مِّنۡهُمۡ
among them
كَمۡ
How long
لَبِثۡتُمۡ‌ۖ
have you remained
قَالُواۡ
They said
لَبِثۡنَا
We have remained
يَوۡمًا
a day
أَوۡ
or
بَعۡضَ
a part
يَوۡمٍ‌ۚ
(of) a day
قَالُواۡ
They said
رَبُّكُمۡ
Your Lord
أَعۡلَمُ
knows best
بِمَا
how long
لَبِثۡتُمۡ
you have remained
فَٱبۡعَثُوٓاۡ
So send
أَحَدَكُم
one of you
بِوَرِقِكُمۡ
with this silver coin of yours
هَـٰذِهِۦٓ
with this silver coin of yours
إِلَى
to
ٱلۡمَدِينَةِ
the city
فَلۡيَنظُرۡ
and let him see
أَيُّهَآ
which is
أَزۡكَىٰ
the purest
طَعَامًا
food
فَلۡيَأۡتِكُم
and let him bring to you
بِرِزۡقٍ
provision
مِّنۡهُ
from it
وَلۡيَتَلَطَّفۡ
and let him be cautious
وَلَا
And let not be aware
يُشۡعِرَنَّ
And let not be aware
بِكُمۡ
about you
أَحَدًا
anyone
١٩
And similarly,1 We awakened them that they might question one another. Said a speaker from among them, "How long have you remained [here]?" They said, "We have remained a day or part of a day." They said, "Your Lord is most knowing of how long you remained. So send one of you with this silver coin of yours to the city and let him look to which is the best of food and bring you provision from it and let him be cautious. And let no one be aware of you.
18:20
إِنَّهُمۡ
Indeed, [they]
إِن
if
يَظۡهَرُواۡ
they come to know
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
about you
يَرۡجُمُوكُمۡ
they will stone you
أَوۡ
or
يُعِيدُوكُمۡ
return you
فِى
to
مِلَّتِهِمۡ
their religion
وَلَن
And never
تُفۡلِحُوٓاۡ
will you succeed
إِذًا
then
أَبَدًا
ever
٢٠
Indeed, if they come to know of you, they will stone you or return you to their religion. And never would you succeed, then - ever."
18:21
وَكَذٰلِكَ
And similarly
أَعۡثَرۡنَا
We made known
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
about them
لِيَعۡلَمُوٓاۡ
that they might know
أَنَّ
that
وَعۡدَ
(the) Promise
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
حَقٌّ
(is) true
وَأَنَّ
and that
ٱلسَّاعَةَ
(about) the Hour
لَا
(there is) no
رَيۡبَ
doubt
فِيهَآ
in it
إِذۡ
When
يَتَنَـٰزَعُونَ
they disputed
بَيۡنَهُمۡ
among themselves
أَمۡرَهُمۡ‌ۖ
about their affair
فَقَالُواۡ
and they said
ٱبۡنُواۡ
Construct
عَلَيۡهِم
over them
بُنۡيَـٰنًا‌ۖ
a structure
رَّبُّهُمۡ
Their Lord
أَعۡلَمُ
knows best
بِهِمۡ‌ۚ
about them
قَالَ
Said
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
غَلَبُواۡ
prevailed
عَلَىٰٓ
in
أَمۡرِهِمۡ
their matter
لَنَتَّخِذَنَّ
Surely we will take
عَلَيۡهِم
over them
مَّسۡجِدًا
a place of worship
٢١
And similarly, We caused them to be found that they [who found them] would know that the promise of Allāh is truth and that of the Hour there is no doubt. [That was] when they1 disputed among themselves about their affair and [then] said, "Construct over them a structure. Their Lord is most knowing about them." Said those who prevailed in the matter, "We will surely take [for ourselves] over them a masjid."2
18:22
سَيَقُولُونَ
They say
ثَلَـٰثَةٌ
(they were) three
رَّابِعُهُمۡ
the forth of them
كَلۡبُهُمۡ
their dog
وَيَقُولُونَ
and they say
خَمۡسَةٌ
(they were) five
سَادِسُهُمۡ
the sixth of them
كَلۡبُهُمۡ
their dog
رَجۡمَۢا
guessing
بِٱلۡغَيۡبِ‌ۖ
about the unseen
وَيَقُولُونَ
and they say
سَبۡعَةٌ
(they were) seven
وَثَامِنُهُمۡ
and the eight of them
كَلۡبُهُمۡ‌ۚ
their dog
قُل
Say
رَّبِّىٓ
My Lord
أَعۡلَمُ
knows best
بِعِدَّتِهِم
their number
مَّا
None
يَعۡلَمُهُمۡ
knows them
إِلَّا
except
قَلِيلٌ‌ۗ
a few
فَلَا
So (do) not
تُمَارِ
argue
فِيهِمۡ
about them
إِلَّا
except
مِرَآءً
(with) an argument
ظَـٰهِرًا
obvious
وَلَا
and (do) not
تَسۡتَفۡتِ
inquire
فِيهِم
about them
مِّنۡهُمۡ
among them
أَحَدًا
(from) anyone
٢٢
They [i.e., people] will say there were three, the fourth of them being their dog; and they will say there were five, the sixth of them being their dog - guessing at the unseen; and they will say there were seven, and the eighth of them was their dog. Say, [O Muḥammad], "My Lord is most knowing of their number. None knows them except a few. So do not argue about them except with an obvious argument1 and do not inquire about them among [the speculators] from anyone."
18:23
وَلَا
And (do) not
تَقُولَنَّ
say
لِشَاۡىۡءٍ
of anything
إِنِّى
Indeed, I
فَاعِلٌ
will do
ذٰلِكَ
that
غَدًا
tomorrow
٢٣
And never say of anything, "Indeed, I will do that tomorrow,"
18:24
إِلَّآ
Except
أَن
If
يَشَآءَ
Allah wills
ٱللَّهُ‌ۚ
Allah wills
وَٱذۡكُر
And remember
رَّبَّكَ
your Lord
إِذَا
when
نَسِيتَ
you forget
وَقُلۡ
and say
عَسَىٰٓ
Perhaps
أَن
[that]
يَهۡدِيَنِ
will guide me
رَبِّى
my Lord
لِأَقۡرَبَ
to a nearer (way)
مِنۡ
than
هَـٰذَا
this
رَشَدًا
right way
٢٤
Except [when adding], "If Allāh wills." And remember your Lord when you forget [it] and say, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct."
18:25
وَلَبِثُواۡ
And they remained
فِى
in
كَهۡفِهِمۡ
their cave
ثَلَـٰثَ
(for) three
مِاۡئَةٍ
hundred
سِنِينَ
years
وَٱزۡدَادُواۡ
and add
تِسۡعًا
nine
٢٥
And they remained in their cave for three hundred years and exceeded by nine.1
18:26
قُلِ
Say
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
أَعۡلَمُ
knows best
بِمَا
about what (period)
لَبِثُواۡ‌ۖ
they remained
لَهُۥ
For Him
غَيۡبُ
(is the) unseen
ٱلسَّمَـٰوٰتِ
(of) the heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ‌ۖ
and the earth
أَبۡصِرۡ
How clearly He sees
بِهِۦ
[of it]
وَأَسۡمِعۡ‌ۚ
And how clearly He hears
مَا
Not
لَهُم
for them
مِّن
besides Him
دُونِهِۦ
besides Him
مِن
any
وَلِىٍّ
protector
وَلَا
and not
يُشۡرِكُ
He shares
فِى
[in]
حُكۡمِهِۦٓ
His Commands
أَحَدًا
(with) anyone
٢٦
Say, "Allāh is most knowing of how long they remained. He has [knowledge of] the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. How Seeing is He and how Hearing! They have not besides Him any protector, and He shares not His legislation with anyone."
18:27
وَٱتۡلُ
And recite
مَآ
what
أُوحِىَ
has been revealed
إِلَيۡكَ
to you
مِن
of
كِتَابِ
the Book
رَبِّكَ‌ۖ
(of) your Lord
لَا
None
مُبَدِّلَ
can change
لِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ
His Words
وَلَن
and never
تَجِدَ
you will find
مِن
besides Him
دُونِهِۦ
besides Him
مُلۡتَحَدًا
a refuge
٢٧
And recite, [O Muḥammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. There is no changer of His words, and never will you find in other than Him a refuge.
18:28
وَٱصۡبِرۡ
And be patient
نَفۡسَكَ
yourself
مَعَ
with
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
يَدۡعُونَ
call
رَبَّهُم
their Lord
بِٱلۡغَدَوٰةِ
in the morning
وَٱلۡعَشِىِّ
and the evening
يُرِيدُونَ
desiring
وَجۡهَهُۥ‌ۖ
His Face
وَلَا
And (let) not
تَعۡدُ
pass beyond
عَيۡنَاكَ
your eyes
عَنۡهُمۡ
over them
تُرِيدُ
desiring
زِينَةَ
adornment
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ
(of) the life
ٱلدُّنۡيَا‌ۖ
(of) the world
وَلَا
and (do) not
تُطِعۡ
obey
مَنۡ
whom
أَغۡفَلۡنَا
We have made heedless
قَلۡبَهُۥ
his heart
عَن
of
ذِكۡرِنَا
Our remembrance
وَٱتَّبَعَ
and follows
هَوَٮٰهُ
his desires
وَكَانَ
and is
أَمۡرُهُۥ
his affair
فُرُطًا
(in) excess
٢٨
And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His face [i.e., acceptance]. And let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring adornments of the worldly life, and do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair is ever [in] neglect.1
18:29
وَقُلِ
And say
ٱلۡحَقُّ
The truth
مِن
(is) from
رَّبِّكُمۡ‌ۖ
your Lord
فَمَن
so whoever
شَآءَ
wills
فَلۡيُؤۡمِن
let him believe
وَمَن
and whoever
شَآءَ
wills
فَلۡيَكۡفُرۡ‌ۚ
let him disbelieve
إِنَّآ
Indeed, We
أَعۡتَدۡنَا
have prepared
لِلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
for the wrongdoers
نَارًا
a Fire
أَحَاطَ
will surround
بِهِمۡ
them
سُرَادِقُهَا‌ۚ
its walls
وَإِن
And if
يَسۡتَغِيثُواۡ
they call for relief
يُغَاثُواۡ
they will be relieved
بِمَآءٍ
with water
كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ
like molten brass
يَشۡوِى
(which) scalds
ٱلۡوُجُوهَ‌ۚ
the faces
بِئۡسَ
Wretched
ٱلشَّرَابُ
(is) the drink
وَسَآءَتۡ
and evil
مُرۡتَفَقًا
(is) the resting place
٢٩
And say, "The truth is from your Lord, so whoever wills - let him believe; and whoever wills - let him disbelieve." Indeed, We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire whose walls will surround them. And if they call for relief, they will be relieved with water like murky oil, which scalds [their] faces. Wretched is the drink, and evil is the resting place.
18:30
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ءَامَنُواۡ

and did
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ
the good deeds
إِنَّا
indeed, We
لَا
will not let go waste
نُضِيعُ
will not let go waste
أَجۡرَ
(the) reward
مَنۡ
(of one) who
أَحۡسَنَ
does good
عَمَلاً
deeds
٣٠
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of any who did well in deeds.
18:31
أُوۡلَـٰٓئِكَ
Those

(is) the resting place
٣١
Those will have gardens of perpetual residence; beneath them rivers will flow. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and will wear green garments of fine silk and brocade, reclining therein on adorned couches. Excellent is the reward, and good is the resting place.
18:32
۞وَٱضۡرِبۡ
And set forth
لَهُم
to them
مَّثَلاً
the example
رَّجُلَيۡنِ
of two men:
جَعَلۡنَا
We provided
لِأَحَدِهِمَا
for one of them
جَنَّتَيۡنِ
two gardens
مِنۡ
of
أَعۡنَـٰبٍ
grapes
وَحَفَفۡنَـٰهُمَا
and We bordered them
بِنَخۡلٍ
with date-palms
وَجَعَلۡنَا
and We placed
بَيۡنَهُمَا
between both of them
زَرۡعًا
crops
٣٢
And present to them an example of two men: We granted to one of them two gardens of grapevines, and We bordered them with palm trees and placed between them [fields of] crops.
18:33
كِلۡتَا
Each
ٱلۡجَنَّتَيۡنِ
(of) the two gardens
ءَاتَتۡ
brought forth
أُكُلَهَا
its produce
وَلَمۡ
and not
تَظۡلِم
did wrong
مِّنۡهُ
of it
شَيۡــًٔا‌ۚ
anything
وَفَجَّرۡنَا
And We caused to gush forth
خِلَـٰلَهُمَا
within them
نَهَرًا
a river
٣٣
Each of the two gardens produced its fruit and did not fall short thereof in anything. And We caused to gush forth within them a river.
18:34
وَكَانَ
And was
لَهُۥ
for him
ثَمَرٌ
fruit
فَقَالَ
so he said
لِصَـٰحِبِهِۦ
to his companion
وَهُوَ
while he
يُحَاوِرُهُۥٓ
(was) talking with him
أَنَاۡ
I am
أَكۡثَرُ
greater
مِنكَ
than you
مَالاً
(in) wealth
وَأَعَزُّ
and stronger
نَفَرًا
(in) men
٣٤
And he had fruit, so he said to his companion while he was conversing with him, "I am greater than you in wealth and mightier in [numbers of] men."
18:35
وَدَخَلَ
And he entered
جَنَّتَهُۥ
his garden
وَهُوَ
while he
ظَالِمٌ
(was) unjust
لِّنَفۡسِهِۦ
to himself
قَالَ
He said
مَآ
Not
أَظُنُّ
I think
أَن
that
تَبِيدَ
will perish
هَـٰذِهِۦٓ
this
أَبَدًا
ever
٣٥
And he entered his garden while he was unjust to himself.1 He said, "I do not think that this will perish - ever.
18:36
وَمَآ
And not
أَظُنُّ
I think
ٱلسَّاعَةَ
the Hour
قَآئِمَةً
will occur
وَلَئِن
And if
رُّدِدتُّ
I am brought back
إِلَىٰ
to
رَبِّى
my Lord
لَأَجِدَنَّ
I will surely find
خَيۡرًا
better
مِّنۡهَا
than this
مُنقَلَبًا
(as) a return
٣٦
And I do not think the Hour will occur. And even if I should be brought back to my Lord, I will surely find better than this as a return."
18:37
قَالَ
Said
لَهُۥ
to him
صَاحِبُهُۥ
his companion
وَهُوَ
while he
يُحَاوِرُهُۥٓ
was talking to him
أَكَفَرۡتَ
Do you disbelieve
بِٱلَّذِى
in One Who
خَلَقَكَ
created you
مِن
from
تُرَابٍ
dust
ثُمَّ
then
مِن
from
نُّطۡفَةٍ
a minute quantity of semen
ثُمَّ
then
سَوَّٮٰكَ
fashioned you
رَجُلاً
(into) a man
٣٧
His companion said to him while he was conversing with him, "Have you disbelieved in He who created you from dust and then from a sperm-drop and then proportioned you [as] a man?
18:38
لَّـٰكِنَّاۡ
But as for me
هُوَ
He
ٱللَّهُ
(is) Allah
رَبِّى
my Lord
وَلَآ
and not
أُشۡرِكُ
I associate
بِرَبِّىٓ
with my Lord
أَحَدًا
anyone
٣٨
But as for me, He is Allāh, my Lord, and I do not associate with my Lord anyone.
18:39
وَلَوۡلَآ
And why (did you) not
إِذۡ
when
دَخَلۡتَ
you entered
جَنَّتَكَ
your garden
قُلۡتَ
say
مَا
What
شَآءَ
wills
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
لَا
(there is) no
قُوَّةَ
power
إِلَّا
except
بِٱللَّهِ‌ۚ
with Allah
إِن
If
تَرَنِ
you see me
أَنَاۡ
(me)
أَقَلَّ
lesser
مِنكَ
than you
مَالاً
(in) wealth
وَوَلَدًا
and children
٣٩
And why did you, when you entered your garden, not say, 'What Allāh willed [has occurred]; there is no power except in Allāh'? Although you see me less than you in wealth and children,
18:40
فَعَسَىٰ
It may be
رَبِّىٓ
that my Lord
أَن
that my Lord
يُؤۡتِيَنِ
will give me
خَيۡرًا
better
مِّن
than
جَنَّتِكَ
your garden
وَيُرۡسِلَ
and will send
عَلَيۡهَا
upon it
حُسۡبَانًا
a calamity
مِّنَ
from
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
the sky
فَتُصۡبِحَ
then it will become
صَعِيدًا
ground
زَلَقًا
slippery
٤٠
It may be that my Lord will give me [something] better than your garden and will send upon it a [disastrous] penalty from the sky, and it will become a smooth, dusty ground,
18:41
أَوۡ
Or
يُصۡبِحَ
will become
مَآؤُهَا
its water
غَوۡرًا
sunken
فَلَن
so never
تَسۡتَطِيعَ
you will be able
لَهُۥ
to find it
طَلَبًا
to find it
٤١
Or its water will become sunken [into the earth], so you would never be able to seek it."
18:42
وَأُحِيطَ
And were surrounded
بِثَمَرِهِۦ
his fruits
فَأَصۡبَحَ
so he began
يُقَلِّبُ
twisting
كَفَّيۡهِ
his hands
عَلَىٰ
over
مَآ
what
أَنفَقَ
he (had) spent
فِيهَا
on it
وَهِىَ
while it (had)
خَاوِيَةٌ
collapsed
عَلَىٰ
on
عُرُوشِهَا
its trellises
وَيَقُولُ
and he said
يَـٰلَيۡتَنِى
Oh! I wish
لَمۡ
I had not associated
أُشۡرِكۡ
I had not associated
بِرَبِّىٓ
with my Lord
أَحَدًا
anyone
٤٢
And his fruits were encompassed [by ruin], so he began to turn his hands about [in dismay] over what he had spent on it, while it had collapsed upon its trellises, and said, "Oh, I wish I had not associated with my Lord anyone."1
18:43
وَلَمۡ
And not
تَكُن
was
لَّهُۥ
for him
فِئَةٌ
a group
يَنصُرُونَهُۥ
(to) help him
مِن
other than
دُونِ
other than
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
وَمَا
and not
كَانَ
was
مُنتَصِرًا
(he) supported
٤٣
And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allāh, nor could he defend himself.
18:44
هُنَالِكَ
There
ٱلۡوَلَـٰيَةُ
the protection
لِلَّهِ
(is) from Allah
ٱلۡحَقِّ‌ۚ
the True
هُوَ
He
خَيۡرٌ
(is the) best
ثَوَابًا
(to) reward
وَخَيۡرٌ
and (the) best
عُقۡبًا
(for) the final end
٤٤
There1 the authority is [completely] for Allāh, the Truth. He is best in reward and best in outcome.
18:45
وَٱضۡرِبۡ
And present
لَهُم
to them
مَّثَلَ
the example
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ
(of) the life
ٱلدُّنۡيَا
(of) the world
كَمَآءٍ
like water
أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ
which We send down
مِنَ
from
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
the sky
فَٱخۡتَلَطَ
then mingles
بِهِۦ
with it
نَبَاتُ
(the) vegetation
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
(of) the earth
فَأَصۡبَحَ
then becomes
هَشِيمًا
dry stalks
تَذۡرُوهُ
it (is) scattered
ٱلرِّيَـٰحُ‌ۗ
(by) the winds
وَكَانَ
And Allah
ٱللَّهُ
And Allah
عَلَىٰ
over
كُلِّ
every
شَىۡءٍ
thing
مُّقۡتَدِرًا
(is) All Able
٤٥
And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it1 and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allāh is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability.
18:46
ٱلۡمَالُ
The wealth
وَٱلۡبَنُونَ
and children
زِينَةُ
(are) adornment
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ
(of) the life
ٱلدُّنۡيَا‌ۖ
(of) the world
وَٱلۡبَـٰقِيَـٰتُ
But the enduring
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُ
good deeds
خَيۡرٌ
(are) better
عِندَ
near
رَبِّكَ
your Lord
ثَوَابًا
(for) reward
وَخَيۡرٌ
and better
أَمَلاً
(for) hope
٤٦
Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord1 for reward and better for [one's] hope.
18:47
وَيَوۡمَ
And the Day
نُسَيِّرُ
We will cause (to) move
ٱلۡجِبَالَ
the mountains
وَتَرَى
and you will see
ٱلۡأَرۡضَ
the earth
بَارِزَةً
(as) a leveled plain
وَحَشَرۡنَـٰهُمۡ
and We will gather them
فَلَمۡ
and not
نُغَادِرۡ
We will leave behind
مِنۡهُمۡ
from them
أَحَدًا
anyone
٤٧
And [warn of] the Day when We will remove the mountains and you will see the earth exposed,1 and We will gather them and not leave behind from them anyone.
18:48
وَعُرِضُواۡ
And they will be presented
عَلَىٰ
before
رَبِّكَ
your Lord
صَفًّا
(in) rows
لَّقَدۡ
Certainly
جِئۡتُمُونَا
you have come to Us
كَمَا
as
خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ
We created you
أَوَّلَ
the first

time
بَلۡ
Nay
زَعَمۡتُمۡ
you claimed
أَلَّن
that not
نَّجۡعَلَ
We made
لَكُم
for you
مَّوۡعِدًا
an appointment
٤٨
And they will be presented before your Lord in rows, [and He will say], "You have certainly come to Us just as We created you the first time. But you claimed that We would never make for you an appointment."
18:49
وَوُضِعَ
And (will) be placed
ٱلۡكِتَـٰبُ
the Book
فَتَرَى
and you will see
ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ
the criminals
مُشۡفِقِينَ
fearful
مِمَّا
of what
فِيهِ
(is) in it
وَيَقُولُونَ
and they will say
يَـٰوَيۡلَتَنَا
Oh, woe to us
مَالِ
What (is) for
هَـٰذَا
this
ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ
[the] Book
لَا
not
يُغَادِرُ
leaves
صَغِيرَةً
a small
وَلَا
and not
كَبِيرَةً
a great
إِلَّآ
except
أَحۡصَـٰهَا‌ۚ
has enumerated it
وَوَجَدُواۡ
And they will find
مَا
what
عَمِلُواۡ
they did
حَاضِرًا‌ۗ
presented
وَلَا
And not
يَظۡلِمُ
deals unjustly
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
أَحَدًا
(with) anyone
٤٩
And the record [of deeds] will be placed [open], and you will see the criminals fearful of that within it, and they will say, "Oh, woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it?" And they will find what they did present [before them]. And your Lord does injustice to no one.
18:50
وَإِذۡ
And when
قُلۡنَا
We said
لِلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ
to the Angels
ٱسۡجُدُواۡ
Prostrate
لِأَدَمَ
to Adam
فَسَجَدُوٓاۡ
so they prostrated
إِلَّآ
except
إِبۡلِيسَ
Iblis
كَانَ
(He) was
مِنَ
of
ٱلۡجِنِّ
the jinn
فَفَسَقَ
and he rebelled
عَنۡ
against
أَمۡرِ
the Command
رَبِّهِۦٓ‌ۗ
(of) his Lord
أَفَتَتَّخِذُونَهُۥ
Will you then take him
وَذُرِّيَّتَهُۥٓ
and his offspring
أَوۡلِيَآءَ
(as) protectors
مِن
other than Me
دُونِى
other than Me
وَهُمۡ
while they
لَكُمۡ
(are) to you
عَدُوُّۢ‌ۚ
enemies
بِئۡسَ
Wretched
لِلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
for the wrongdoers
بَدَلاً
(is) the exchange
٥٠
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from [i.e., disobeyed] the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange.
18:51
۞مَّآ
Not
أَشۡهَدتُّهُمۡ
I made them witness
خَلۡقَ
the creation
ٱلسَّمَـٰوٰتِ
(of) the heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ
and the earth
وَلَا
and not
خَلۡقَ
the creation
أَنفُسِهِمۡ
(of) themselves
وَمَا
and not
كُنتُ
I Am
مُتَّخِذَ
the One to take
ٱلۡمُضِلِّينَ
the misleaders
عَضُدًا
(as) helper(s)
٥١
I did not make them witness to the creation of the heavens and the earth or to the creation of themselves, and I would not have taken the misguiders as assistants.
18:52
وَيَوۡمَ
And the Day
يَقُولُ
He will say
نَادُواۡ
Call
شُرَكَآءِىَ
My partners
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
زَعَمۡتُمۡ
you claimed
فَدَعَوۡهُمۡ
then they will call them
فَلَمۡ
but not
يَسۡتَجِيبُواۡ
they will respond
لَهُمۡ
to them
وَجَعَلۡنَا
And We will make
بَيۡنَهُم
between them
مَّوۡبِقًا
a barrier
٥٢
And [warn of] the Day when He will say, "Call My 'partners' whom you claimed," and they will invoke them, but they will not respond to them. And We will put between them [a valley of] destruction.
18:53
وَرَءَا
And will see
ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ
the criminals
ٱلنَّارَ
the Fire
فَظَنُّوٓاۡ
and they (will be) certain
أَنَّهُم
that they
مُّوَاقِعُوهَا
are to fall in it
وَلَمۡ
And not
يَجِدُواۡ
they will find
عَنۡهَا
from it
مَصۡرِفًا
a way of escape
٥٣
And the criminals will see the Fire and will be certain that they are to fall therein. And they will not find from it a way elsewhere.
18:54
وَلَقَدۡ
And certainly
صَرَّفۡنَا
We have explained
فِى
in
هَـٰذَا
this
ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ
the Quran
لِلنَّاسِ
for mankind
مِن
of
كُلِّ
every
مَثَلٍ‌ۚ
example
وَكَانَ
But is
ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ
the man
أَكۡثَرَ
(in) most
شَىۡءٍ
things
جَدَلاً
quarrelsome
٥٤
And We have certainly diversified in this Qur’ān for the people from every [kind of] example; but man has ever been, most of anything, [prone to] dispute.
18:55
وَمَا
And nothing
مَنَعَ
prevents
ٱلنَّاسَ
men
أَن
that
يُؤۡمِنُوٓاۡ
they believe
إِذۡ
when
جَآءَهُمُ
has come to them
ٱلۡهُدَىٰ
the guidance
وَيَسۡتَغۡفِرُواۡ
and they ask forgiveness
رَبَّهُمۡ
(of) their Lord
إِلَّآ
except
أَن
that
تَأۡتِيَهُمۡ
comes to them
سُنَّةُ
(the) way
ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ
(of) the former (people)
أَوۡ
or
يَأۡتِيَهُمُ
comes to them
ٱلۡعَذَابُ
the punishment
قُبُلاً
before (them)
٥٥
And nothing has prevented the people from believing when guidance came to them and from asking forgiveness of their Lord except that there [must] befall them the [accustomed] precedent of the former peoples1 or that the punishment should come [directly] before them.
18:56
وَمَا
And not
نُرۡسِلُ
We send
ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ
the Messengers
إِلَّا
except
مُبَشِّرِينَ
(as) bearers of glad tidings
وَمُنذِرِينَ‌ۚ
and (as) warners
وَيُجَـٰدِلُ
And dispute
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
كَفَرُواۡ
disbelieve
بِٱلۡبَـٰطِلِ
with falsehood
لِيُدۡحِضُواۡ
to refute
بِهِ
thereby
ٱلۡحَقَّ‌ۖ
the truth
وَٱتَّخَذُوٓاۡ
And they take
ءَايَـٰتِى
My Verses
وَمَآ
and what
أُنذِرُواۡ
they are warned
هُزُوًا
(in) ridicule
٥٦
And We send not the messengers except as bringers of good tidings and warners. And those who disbelieve dispute by [using] falsehood to [attempt to] invalidate thereby the truth and have taken My verses, and that of which they are warned, in ridicule.
18:57
وَمَنۡ
And who
أَظۡلَمُ
(is) more wrong
مِمَّن
than (he) who
ذُكِّرَ
is reminded
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِ
of the Verses
رَبِّهِۦ
(of) his Lord
فَأَعۡرَضَ
but turns away
عَنۡهَا
from them
وَنَسِىَ
and forgets
مَا
what
قَدَّمَتۡ
have sent forth
يَدَاهُ‌ۚ
his hands
إِنَّا
Indeed, We
جَعَلۡنَا
[We] have placed
عَلَىٰ
over
قُلُوبِهِمۡ
their hearts
أَكِنَّةً
coverings
أَن
lest
يَفۡقَهُوهُ
they understand it
وَفِىٓ
and in
ءَاذَانِهِمۡ
their ears
وَقۡرًا‌ۖ
(is) deafness
وَإِن
And if
تَدۡعُهُمۡ
you call them
إِلَى
to
ٱلۡهُدَىٰ
the guidance
فَلَن
then never
يَهۡتَدُوٓاۡ
they will be guided
إِذًا
then
أَبَدًا
ever
٥٧
And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord but turns away from them and forgets what his hands have put forth? Indeed, We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And if you invite them to guidance - they will never be guided, then - ever.
18:58
وَرَبُّكَ
And your Lord
ٱلۡغَفُورُ
(is) the Most Forgiving
ذُو
Owner
ٱلرَّحۡمَةِ‌ۖ
(of) the Mercy
لَوۡ
If
يُؤَاخِذُهُم
He were to seize them
بِمَا
for what
كَسَبُواۡ
they have earned
لَعَجَّلَ
surely, He (would) have hastened
لَهُمُ
for them
ٱلۡعَذَابَ‌ۚ
the punishment
بَل
But
لَّهُم
for them
مَّوۡعِدٌ
(is) an appointment
لَّن
never
يَجِدُواۡ
they will find
مِن
other than it
دُونِهِۦ
other than it
مَوۡئِلاً
an escape
٥٨
And your Lord is the Forgiving, the possessor of mercy. If He were to impose blame upon them for what they earned, He would have hastened for them the punishment. Rather, for them is an appointment from which they will never find an escape.
18:59
وَتِلۡكَ
And these
ٱلۡقُرَىٰٓ
[the] towns
أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡ
We destroyed them
لَمَّا
when
ظَلَمُواۡ
they wronged
وَجَعَلۡنَا
and We made
لِمَهۡلِكِهِم
for their destruction
مَّوۡعِدًا
an appointed time
٥٩
And those cities - We destroyed them when they wronged, and We made for their destruction an appointed time.
18:60

مَجۡمَعَ
the junction
ٱلۡبَحۡرَيۡنِ
(of) the two seas
أَوۡ

I continue
حُقُبًا
(for) a long period
٦٠
And [mention] when Moses said to his boy [i.e., servant], "I will not cease [traveling] until I reach the junction of the two seas or continue for a long period."
18:61
فَلَمَّا
But when
بَلَغَا
they reached
مَجۡمَعَ
the junction
بَيۡنِهِمَا
between them
نَسِيَا
they forgot
حُوتَهُمَا
their fish
فَٱتَّخَذَ
and it took
سَبِيلَهُۥ
its way
فِى
into
ٱلۡبَحۡرِ
the sea
سَرَبًا
slipping away
٦١
But when they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its course into the sea, slipping away.
18:62
فَلَمَّا
Then when
جَاوَزَا
they had passed beyond
قَالَ
he said
لِفَتَـٰهُ
to his boy
ءَاتِنَا
Bring us
غَدَآءَنَا
our morning meal
لَقَدۡ
Certainly
لَقِينَا
we have suffered
مِن
in
سَفَرِنَا
our journey
هَـٰذَا
this
نَصَبًا
fatigue
٦٢
So when they had passed beyond it, [Moses] said to his boy, "Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered in this, our journey, [much] fatigue."
18:63
قَالَ
He said
أَرَءَيۡتَ
Did you see
إِذۡ
when
أَوَيۡنَآ
we retired
إِلَى
to
ٱلصَّخۡرَةِ
the rock
فَإِنِّى
Then indeed, I
نَسِيتُ
[I] forgot
ٱلۡحُوتَ
the fish
وَمَآ
And not
أَنۡسَـٰنِيهُ
made me forget it
إِلَّا
except
ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنُ
the Shaitaan
أَنۡ
that
أَذۡكُرَهُۥ‌ۚ
I mention it
وَٱتَّخَذَ
And it took
سَبِيلَهُۥ
its way
فِى
into
ٱلۡبَحۡرِ
the sea
عَجَبًا
amazingly
٦٣
He said, "Did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed, I forgot [there] the fish. And none made me forget it except Satan - that I should mention it. And it took its course into the sea amazingly."
18:64
قَالَ
He said
ذٰلِكَ
That
مَا
(is) what
كُنَّا
we were
نَبۡغِ‌ۚ
seeking
فَٱرۡتَدَّا
So they returned
عَلَىٰٓ
on
ءَاثَارِهِمَا
their footprints
قَصَصًا
retracing
٦٤
[Moses] said, "That is what we were seeking." So they returned, following their footprints.
18:65
فَوَجَدَا
Then they found
عَبۡدًا
a servant
مِّنۡ
from
عِبَادِنَآ
Our servants
ءَاتَيۡنَـٰهُ
whom We had given
رَحۡمَةً
mercy
مِّنۡ
from
عِندِنَا
Us
وَعَلَّمۡنَـٰهُ
and We had taught him
مِن
from
لَّدُنَّا
Us
عِلۡمًا
a knowledge
٦٥
And they found a servant from among Our servants [i.e., al-Khiḍr] to whom We had given mercy from Us and had taught him from Us a [certain] knowledge.
18:66
قَالَ
Said
لَهُۥ
to him
مُوسَىٰ
Musa
هَلۡ
May
أَتَّبِعُكَ
I follow you
عَلَىٰٓ
on
أَن
that
تُعَلِّمَنِ
you teach me
مِمَّا
of what
عُلِّمۡتَ
you have been taught
رُشۡدًا
(of) right guidance
٦٦
Moses said to him, "May I follow you on [the condition] that you teach me from what you have been taught of sound judgement?"
18:67
قَالَ
He said
إِنَّكَ
Indeed, you
لَن
never
تَسۡتَطِيعَ
will be able
مَعِىَ
with me
صَبۡرًا
(to have) patience
٦٧
He said, "Indeed, with me you will never be able to have patience.
18:68
وَكَيۡفَ
And how can
تَصۡبِرُ
you have patience
عَلَىٰ
for
مَا
what
لَمۡ
not
تُحِطۡ
you encompass
بِهِۦ
of it
خُبۡرًا
any knowledge
٦٨
And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?"
18:69
قَالَ
He said
سَتَجِدُنِىٓ
You will find me
إِن
if
شَآءَ
Allah wills
ٱللَّهُ
Allah wills
صَابِرًا
patient
وَلَآ
and not
أَعۡصِى
I will disobey
لَكَ
your
أَمۡرًا
order
٦٩
[Moses] said, "You will find me, if Allāh wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in [any] order."
18:70
قَالَ
He said
فَإِنِ
Then if
ٱتَّبَعۡتَنِى
you follow me
فَلَا
(do) not
تَسۡــَٔلۡنِى
ask me
عَن
about
شَىۡءٍ
anything
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
أُحۡدِثَ
I present
لَكَ
to you
مِنۡهُ
of it
ذِكۡرًا
a mention
٧٠
He said, "Then if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I make to you about it mention [i.e., explanation]."
18:71
فَٱنطَلَقَا
So they both set out
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
إِذَا
when
رَكِبَا
they had embarked
فِى
on
ٱلسَّفِينَةِ
the ship
خَرَقَهَا‌ۖ
he made a hole in it
قَالَ
He said
أَخَرَقۡتَهَا
Have you made a hole in it
لِتُغۡرِقَ
to drown
أَهۡلَهَا
its people
لَقَدۡ
Certainly
جِئۡتَ
you have done
شَيۡــًٔا
a thing
إِمۡرًا
grave
٧١
So they set out, until when they had embarked on the ship, he [i.e., al-Khiḍr] tore it open. [Moses] said, "Have you torn it open to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing."
18:72
قَالَ
He said
أَلَمۡ
Did not
أَقُلۡ
I say
إِنَّكَ
indeed, you
لَن
never
تَسۡتَطِيعَ
will be able
مَعِىَ
with me
صَبۡرًا
(to have) patience
٧٢
[Al-Khiḍr] said, "Did I not say that with me you would never be able to have patience?"
18:73
قَالَ
He said
لَا
(Do) not
تُؤَاخِذۡنِى
blame me
بِمَا
for what
نَسِيتُ
I forgot
وَلَا
and (do) not
تُرۡهِقۡنِى
be hard (upon) me
مِنۡ
in
أَمۡرِى
my affair
عُسۡرًا
(raising) difficulty
٧٣
[Moses] said, "Do not blame me for what I forgot and do not overwhelm me in my matter with difficulty."
18:74
فَٱنطَلَقَا
Then they both set out
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
إِذَا
when
لَقِيَا
they met
غُلَـٰمًا
a boy
فَقَتَلَهُۥ
then he killed him
قَالَ
He said
أَقَتَلۡتَ
Have you killed
نَفۡسًا
a soul
زَكِيَّةَۢ
pure
بِغَيۡرِ
for other than
نَفۡسٍ
a soul
لَّقَدۡ
Certainly
جِئۡتَ
you have done
شَيۡــًٔا
a thing
نُّكۡرًا
evil
٧٤
So they set out, until when they met a boy, he [i.e., al-Khiḍr] killed him. [Moses] said, "Have you killed a pure soul for other than [having killed] a soul? You have certainly done a deplorable thing."
18:75
۞قَالَ
He said
أَلَمۡ
Did not
أَقُل
I say
لَّكَ
to you
إِنَّكَ
that you
لَن
never
تَسۡتَطِيعَ
will be able
مَعِىَ
with me
صَبۡرًا
(to have) patience
٧٥
[Al-Khiḍr] said, "Did I not tell you that with me you would never be able to have patience?"
18:76
قَالَ
He said
إِن
If
سَأَلۡتُكَ
I ask you
عَن
about
شَىۡءِۭ
anything
بَعۡدَهَا
after it
فَلَا
then (do) not
تُصَـٰحِبۡنِى‌ۖ
keep me as a companion
قَدۡ
Verily
بَلَغۡتَ
you have reached
مِن
from me
لَّدُنِّى
from me
عُذۡرًا
an excuse
٧٦
[Moses] said, "If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse."
18:77
فَٱنطَلَقَا
So they set out
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
إِذَآ
when
أَتَيَآ
they came
أَهۡلَ
(to the) people
قَرۡيَةٍ
(of) a town
ٱسۡتَطۡعَمَآ
they asked for food
أَهۡلَهَا
(from) its people
فَأَبَوۡاۡ
but they refused
أَن
to
يُضَيِّفُوهُمَا
offer them hospitality
فَوَجَدَا
Then they found
فِيهَا
in it
جِدَارًا
a wall
يُرِيدُ
(that) want(ed)
أَن
to
يَنقَضَّ
collapse
فَأَقَامَهُۥ‌ۖ
so he set it straight
قَالَ
He said
لَوۡ
If
شِئۡتَ
you wished
لَتَّخَذۡتَ
surely you (could) have taken
عَلَيۡهِ
for it
أَجۡرًا
a payment
٧٧
So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found therein a wall about to collapse, so he [i.e., al-Khiḍr] restored it. [Moses] said, "If you wished, you could have taken for it a payment."
18:78
قَالَ
He said
هَـٰذَا
This
فِرَاقُ
(is) parting
بَيۡنِى
between me
وَبَيۡنِكَ‌ۚ
and between you
سَأُنَبِّئُكَ
I will inform you
بِتَأۡوِيلِ
of (the) interpretation
مَا
(of) what
لَمۡ
not
تَسۡتَطِع
you were able
عَّلَيۡهِ
on it
صَبۡرًا
(to have) patience
٧٨
[Al-Khiḍr] said, "This is parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.
18:79
أَمَّا
As for
ٱلسَّفِينَةُ
the ship
فَكَانَتۡ
it was
لِمَسَـٰكِينَ
of (the) poor people
يَعۡمَلُونَ
working
فِى
in
ٱلۡبَحۡرِ
the sea
فَأَرَدتُّ
So I intended
أَنۡ
that
أَعِيبَهَا
I cause defect (in) it
وَكَانَ
(as there) was
وَرَآءَهُم
after them
مَّلِكٌ
a king
يَأۡخُذُ
who seized
كُلَّ
every
سَفِينَةٍ
ship
غَصۡبًا
(by) force
٧٩
As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea. So I intended to cause defect in it as there was after them a king who seized every [good] ship by force.
18:80
وَأَمَّا
And as for
ٱلۡغُلَـٰمُ
the boy
فَكَانَ
his parents were
أَبَوَاهُ
his parents were
مُؤۡمِنَيۡنِ
believers
فَخَشِينَآ
and we feared
أَن
that
يُرۡهِقَهُمَا
he would overburden them
طُغۡيَـٰنًا
(by) transgression
وَكُفۡرًا
and disbelief
٨٠
And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief.
18:81
فَأَرَدۡنَآ
So we intended
أَن
that
يُبۡدِلَهُمَا
would change for them
رَبُّهُمَا
their Lord
خَيۡرًا
a better
مِّنۡهُ
than him
زَكَوٰةً
(in) purity
وَأَقۡرَبَ
and nearer
رُحۡمًا
(in) affection
٨١
So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy.
18:82
وَأَمَّا
And as for
ٱلۡجِدَارُ
the wall
فَكَانَ
it was
لِغُلَـٰمَيۡنِ
for two orphan boys
يَتِيمَيۡنِ
for two orphan boys
فِى
in
ٱلۡمَدِينَةِ
the town
وَكَانَ
and was
تَحۡتَهُۥ
underneath it
كَنزٌ
a treasure
لَّهُمَا
for them
وَكَانَ
and was
أَبُوهُمَا
their father
صَـٰلِحًا
righteous
فَأَرَادَ
So intended
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
أَن
that
يَبۡلُغَآ
they reach
أَشُدَّهُمَا
their maturity
وَيَسۡتَخۡرِجَا
and bring forth
كَنزَهُمَا
their treasure
رَحۡمَةً
(as) a mercy
مِّن
from
رَّبِّكَ‌ۚ
your Lord
وَمَا
And not
فَعَلۡتُهُۥ
I did it
عَنۡ
on
أَمۡرِى‌ۚ
my (own) accord
ذٰلِكَ
That
تَأۡوِيلُ
(is the) interpretation
مَا
(of) what
لَمۡ
not
تَسۡطِع
you were able
عَّلَيۡهِ
on it
صَبۡرًا
(to have) patience
٨٢
And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience."
18:83
وَيَسۡــَٔلُونَكَ
And they ask you
عَن
about
ذِى
Dhul-qarnain
ٱلۡقَرۡنَيۡنِ‌ۖ
Dhul-qarnain
قُلۡ
Say
سَأَتۡلُواۡ
I will recite
عَلَيۡكُم
to you
مِّنۡهُ
about him
ذِكۡرًا
a remembrance
٨٣
And they ask you, [O Muḥammad], about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, "I will recite to you about him a report."
18:84
إِنَّا
Indeed, We
مَكَّنَّا
[We] established
لَهُۥ
[for] him
فِى
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
the earth
وَءَاتَيۡنَـٰهُ
and We gave him
مِن
of
كُلِّ
every
شَىۡءٍ
thing
سَبَبًا
a means
٨٤
Indeed, We established him upon the earth, and We gave him from everything a way [i.e., means].
18:85
فَأَتۡبَعَ
So he followed
سَبَبًا
a course
٨٥
So he followed a way
18:86
حَتَّىٰٓ
Until
إِذَا
when
بَلَغَ
he reached
مَغۡرِبَ
(the) setting place
ٱلشَّمۡسِ
(of) the sun
وَجَدَهَا
he found it
تَغۡرُبُ
setting
فِى
in
عَيۡنٍ
a spring
حَمِئَةٍ
(of) dark mud
وَوَجَدَ
and he found
عِندَهَا
near it
قَوۡمًا‌ۗ
a community
قُلۡنَا
We said
يَـٰذَا
O Dhul-qarnain
ٱلۡقَرۡنَيۡنِ
O Dhul-qarnain
إِمَّآ
Either
أَن
[that]
تُعَذِّبَ
you punish
وَإِمَّآ
or
أَن
[that]
تَتَّخِذَ
you take
فِيهِمۡ
[in] them
حُسۡنًا
(with) goodness
٨٦
Until, when he reached the setting of the sun [i.e., the west], he found it [as if] setting in a body of dark water,1 and he found near it a people. We [i.e., Allāh] said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness."
18:87
قَالَ
He said
أَمَّا
As for
مَن
(one) who
ظَلَمَ
wrongs
فَسَوۡفَ
then soon
نُعَذِّبُهُۥ
we will punish him
ثُمَّ
Then
يُرَدُّ
he will be returned
إِلَىٰ
to
رَبِّهِۦ
his Lord
فَيُعَذِّبُهُۥ
and He will punish him
عَذَابًا
(with) a punishment
نُّكۡرًا
terrible
٨٧
He said, "As for one who wrongs,1 we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment [i.e., Hellfire].
18:88
وَأَمَّا
But as for
مَنۡ
(one) who
ءَامَنَ
believes
وَعَمِلَ
and does
صَـٰلِحًا
righteous (deeds)
فَلَهُۥ
then for him
جَزَآءً
(is) a reward
ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ‌ۖ
good
وَسَنَقُولُ
And we will speak
لَهُۥ
to him
مِنۡ
from
أَمۡرِنَا
our command
يُسۡرًا
(with) ease
٨٨
But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of the best [i.e., Paradise], and we [i.e., Dhul-Qarnayn] will speak to him from our command with ease."
18:89
ثُمَّ
Then
أَتۡبَعَ
he followed
سَبَبًا
(a) course
٨٩
Then he followed a way
18:90
حَتَّىٰٓ
Until
إِذَا
when
بَلَغَ
he reached
مَطۡلِعَ
(the) rising place
ٱلشَّمۡسِ
(of) the sun
وَجَدَهَا
and he found it
تَطۡلُعُ
rising
عَلَىٰ
on
قَوۡمٍ
a community
لَّمۡ
not
نَجۡعَل
We made
لَّهُم
for them
مِّن
against it
دُونِهَا
against it
سِتۡرًا
any shelter
٩٠
Until, when he came to the rising of the sun [i.e., the east], he found it rising on a people for whom We had not made against it any shield.
18:91
كَذٰلِكَ
Thus
وَقَدۡ
And verily
أَحَطۡنَا
We encompassed
بِمَا
of what
لَدَيۡهِ
(was) with him
خُبۡرًا
(of the) information
٩١
Thus.1 And We had encompassed [all] that he had in knowledge.
18:92
ثُمَّ
Then
أَتۡبَعَ
he followed
سَبَبًا
a course
٩٢
Then he followed a way.
18:93
حَتَّىٰٓ
Until
إِذَا
when
بَلَغَ
he reached
بَيۡنَ
between
ٱلسَّدَّيۡنِ
the two mountains
وَجَدَ
he found
مِن
besides them
دُونِهِمَا
besides them
قَوۡمًا
a community
لَّا
not
يَكَادُونَ
who would almost
يَفۡقَهُونَ
understand
قَوۡلاً
(his) speech
٩٣
Until, when he reached [a pass] between two mountains, he found beside them a people who could hardly understand [his] speech.
18:94
قَالُواۡ
They said
يَـٰذَا
O Dhul-qarnain
ٱلۡقَرۡنَيۡنِ
O Dhul-qarnain
إِنَّ
Indeed
يَأۡجُوجَ
Yajuj
وَمَأۡجُوجَ
and Majuj
مُفۡسِدُونَ
(are) corrupters
فِى
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
the land
فَهَلۡ
So may
نَجۡعَلُ
we make
لَكَ
for you
خَرۡجًا
an expenditure
عَلَىٰٓ
[on]
أَن
that
تَجۡعَلَ
you make
بَيۡنَنَا
between us
وَبَيۡنَهُمۡ
and between them
سَدًّا
a barrier
٩٤
They said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed Gog and Magog1 are [great] corrupters in the land. So may we assign for you an expenditure that you might make between us and them a barrier?"
18:95
قَالَ
He said
مَا
What
مَكَّنِّى
has established me
فِيهِ
[in it]
رَبِّى
my Lord
خَيۡرٌ
(is) better
فَأَعِينُونِى
but assist me
بِقُوَّةٍ
with strength
أَجۡعَلۡ
I will make
بَيۡنَكُمۡ
between you
وَبَيۡنَهُمۡ
and between them
رَدۡمًا
a barrier
٩٥
He said, "That in which my Lord has established me is better [than what you offer], but assist me with strength [i.e., manpower]; I will make between you and them a dam.
18:96
ءَاتُونِى
Bring me
زُبَرَ
sheets
ٱلۡحَدِيدِ‌ۖ
(of) iron
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
إِذَا
when
سَاوَىٰ
he (had) leveled
بَيۡنَ
between
ٱلصَّدَفَيۡنِ
the two cliffs
قَالَ
he said
ٱنفُخُواۡ‌ۖ
Blow
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
إِذَا
when
جَعَلَهُۥ
he made it
نَارًا
fire
قَالَ
he said
ءَاتُونِىٓ
Bring me
أُفۡرِغۡ
I pour
عَلَيۡهِ
over it
قِطۡرًا
molten copper
٩٦
Bring me bars of iron" - until, when he had leveled [them] between the two mountain walls, he said, "Blow [with bellows]," until when he had made it [like] fire, he said, "Bring me, that I may pour over it molten copper."
18:97
فَمَا
So not
ٱسۡطَـٰعُوٓاۡ
they were able
أَن
to
يَظۡهَرُوهُ
scale it
وَمَا
and not
ٱسۡتَطَـٰعُواۡ
they were able
لَهُۥ
in it
نَقۡبًا
(to do) any penetration
٩٧
So they [i.e., Gog and Magog] were unable to pass over it, nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration.
18:98
قَالَ
He said
هَـٰذَا
This
رَحۡمَةٌ
(is) a mercy
مِّن
from
رَّبِّى‌ۖ
my Lord
فَإِذَا
But when
جَآءَ
comes
وَعۡدُ
(the) Promise
رَبِّى
(of) my Lord
جَعَلَهُۥ
He will make it
دَكَّآءَ‌ۖ
level
وَكَانَ
And is
وَعۡدُ
(the) Promise
رَبِّى
(of) my Lord
حَقًّا
true
٩٨
[Dhul-Qarnayn] said, "This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord1 comes [i.e., approaches], He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true."
18:99
۞وَتَرَكۡنَا
And We (will) leave
بَعۡضَهُمۡ
some of them
يَوۡمَئِذٍ
(on) that Day
يَمُوجُ
to surge
فِى
over
بَعۡضٍ‌ۖ
others
وَنُفِخَ
and (will be) blown
فِى
in
ٱلصُّورِ
the trumpet
فَجَمَعۡنَـٰهُمۡ
then We (will) gather them
جَمۡعًا
all together
٩٩
And We will leave them that day1 surging over each other, and [then] the Horn will be blown, and We will assemble them in [one] assembly.
18:100
وَعَرَضۡنَا
And We (will) present
جَهَنَّمَ
Hell
يَوۡمَئِذٍ
(on) that Day
لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِينَ
to the disbelievers
عَرۡضًا
(on) display
١٠٠
And We will present Hell that Day to the disbelievers, on display -
18:101
ٱلَّذِينَ
Those
كَانَتۡ
had been
أَعۡيُنُهُمۡ
their eyes
فِى
within
غِطَآءٍ
a cover
عَن
from
ذِكۡرِى
My remembrance
وَكَانُواۡ
and were
لَا
not
يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ
able
سَمۡعًا
(to) hear
١٠١
Those whose eyes had been within a cover [removed] from My remembrance,1 and they were not able to hear.2
18:102
أَفَحَسِبَ
Do then think
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
كَفَرُوٓاۡ
disbelieve
أَن
that
يَتَّخِذُواۡ
they (can) take
عِبَادِى
My servants
مِن
besides Me
دُونِىٓ
besides Me
أَوۡلِيَآءَ‌ۚ
(as) protectors
إِنَّآ
Indeed, We
أَعۡتَدۡنَا
We have prepared
جَهَنَّمَ
Hell
لِلۡكَـٰفِرِينَ
for the disbelievers
نُزُلاً
(as) a lodging
١٠٢
Then do those who disbelieve think that they can take My servants instead of Me as allies? Indeed, We have prepared Hell for the disbelievers as a lodging.
18:103
قُلۡ
Say
هَلۡ
Shall
نُنَبِّئُكُم
We inform you
بِٱلۡأَخۡسَرِينَ
of the greatest losers
أَعۡمَـٰلاً
(as to their) deeds
١٠٣
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds?
18:104
ٱلَّذِينَ
Those
ضَلَّ
is lost
سَعۡيُهُمۡ
their effort
فِى
in
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ
the life
ٱلدُّنۡيَا
(of) the world
وَهُمۡ
while they
يَحۡسَبُونَ
think
أَنَّهُمۡ
that they
يُحۡسِنُونَ
(were) acquiring good
صُنۡعًا
(in) work
١٠٤
[They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work."
18:105
أُوۡلَـٰٓئِكَ
Those
ٱلَّذِينَ
(are) the ones who
كَفَرُواۡ
disbelieve
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِ
in the Verses
رَبِّهِمۡ
(of) their Lord
وَلِقَآئِهِۦ
and the meeting (with) Him
فَحَبِطَتۡ
So (are) vain
أَعۡمَـٰلُهُمۡ
their deeds
فَلَا
so not
نُقِيمُ
We will assign
لَهُمۡ
for them
يَوۡمَ
(on) the Day
ٱلۡقِيَـٰمَةِ
(of) the Resurrection
وَزۡنًا
any weight
١٠٥
Those are the ones who disbelieve in the verses of their Lord and in [their] meeting Him, so their deeds have become worthless; and We will not assign to them on the Day of Resurrection any weight [i.e., importance].
18:106
ذٰلِكَ
That
جَزَآؤُهُمۡ
(is) their recompense
جَهَنَّمُ
Hell
بِمَا
because
كَفَرُواۡ
they disbelieved
وَٱتَّخَذُوٓاۡ
and took
ءَايَـٰتِى
My Verses
وَرُسُلِى
and My Messengers
هُزُوًا
(in) ridicule
١٠٦
That is their recompense - Hell - for what they denied and [because] they took My signs and My messengers in ridicule.
18:107
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ءَامَنُواۡ
believed
وَعَمِلُواۡ
and did
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ
righteous deeds
كَانَتۡ
for them will be
لَهُمۡ
for them will be
جَنَّـٰتُ
Gardens
ٱلۡفِرۡدَوۡسِ
(of) the Paradise
نُزُلاً
(as) a lodging
١٠٧
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - they will have the Gardens of Paradise1 as a lodging,
18:108
خَـٰلِدِينَ
Abiding forever
فِيهَا
in it
لَا
Not
يَبۡغُونَ
they will desire
عَنۡهَا
from it
حِوَلاً
any transfer
١٠٨
Wherein they abide eternally. They will not desire from it any transfer.
18:109
قُل
Say
لَّوۡ
If
كَانَ
were
ٱلۡبَحۡرُ
the sea
مِدَادًا
ink
لِّكَلِمَـٰتِ
for (the) Words
رَبِّى
(of) my Lord
لَنَفِدَ
surely (would be) exhausted
ٱلۡبَحۡرُ
the sea
قَبۡلَ
before
أَن
[that]
تَنفَدَ
(were) exhausted
كَلِمَـٰتُ
(the) Words
رَبِّى
(of) my Lord
وَلَوۡ
even if
جِئۡنَا
We brought
بِمِثۡلِهِۦ
(the) like (of) it
مَدَدًا
(as) a supplement
١٠٩
Say, "If the sea were ink for [writing] the words1 of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it in [continual] supplement."
18:110
قُلۡ
Say
إِنَّمَآ
Only
أَنَاۡ
I
بَشَرٌ
(am) a man
مِّثۡلُكُمۡ
like you
يُوحَىٰٓ
Has been revealed
إِلَىَّ
to me
أَنَّمَآ
that
إِلَـٰهُكُمۡ
your God
إِلَـٰهٌ
(is) God
وٰحِدٌ‌ۖ
One
فَمَن
So whoever
كَانَ
is
يَرۡجُواۡ
hoping
لِقَآءَ
(for the) meeting
رَبِّهِۦ
(with) his Lord
فَلۡيَعۡمَلۡ
let him do
عَمَلاً
deeds
صَـٰلِحًا
righteous
وَلَا
and not
يُشۡرِكۡ
associate
بِعِبَادَةِ
in (the) worship
رَبِّهِۦٓ
(of) his Lord
أَحَدَۢا
anyone
١١٠
Say, "I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone."
