The Jinn28 Verses4 Hadithsmakkah
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
✦
72:1
قُلۡ
Say
أُوحِىَ
It has been revealed
إِلَىَّ
to me
أَنّ َهُ
that
listened
نَفَرٌ
a group
of
the jinn
فَقَالُوٓ اۡ
and they said
إِنّ َا
Indeed, we
سَمِعۡنَا
heard
قُرۡءَانًا
a Quran
عَجَبًا
١amazing
Say, [O Muḥammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].
72:2
يَهۡدِىٓ
It guides
إِلَى
to
the right way
فَـَٔـامَنّ َا
so we believe
بِهِۦ ۖ
in it
وَلَن
and never
we will associate
بِرَبِّنَآ
with our Lord
أَحَدًا
٢anyone
It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone.
72:3
وَأَنّ َهُۥ
And that He
تَعَـٰ لَىٰ
Exalted is
جَدُّ
(the) Majesty
رَبِّنَا
(of) our Lord
مَا
not
He has taken
صَـٰ حِبَةً
a wife
and not
وَلَدًا
٣a son
And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son
72:4
وَأَنّ َهُۥ
And that he
كَانَ
used to
يَقُولُ
speak
سَفِيهُنَا
the foolish among us
عَلَى
against
Allah
شَطَطًا
٤an excessive transgression
And that our foolish one [i.e., Iblees]1 has been saying about Allāh an excessive transgression.
72:5
وَأَنّ َا
And that we
ظَنَنّ َآ
thought
أَن
that
never
will say
the men
وَٱ لۡجِنّ ُ
and the jinn
عَلَى
against
Allah
كَذِبًا
٥any lie
And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allāh a lie.
72:6
وَأَنّ َهُۥ
And that
كَانَ
(there) were
رِجَالٌ
men
among
mankind
يَعُوذُونَ
who sought refuge
بِرِجَالٍ
in (the) men
from
the jinn
فَزَادُوهُمۡ
so they increased them
رَهَقًا
٦(in) burden
And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden [i.e., sin].
72:7
وَأَنّ َهُمۡ
And that they
ظَنّ ُواۡ
thought
كَمَا
as
ظَنَنت ُمۡ
you thought
أَن
that
never
will raise
Allah
أَحَدًا
٧anyone
And they had thought, as you thought, that Allāh would never send anyone [as a messenger].
72:8
وَأَنّ َا
And that we
لَمَسۡنَا
sought to touch
the heaven
فَوَجَدۡ نَـٰ هَا
but we found it
مُلِئَتۡ
filled (with)
حَرَسًا
guards
severe
and flaming fires
And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames.
72:9
وَأَنّ َا
And that we
كُنّ َا
used to
نَقۡ عُدُ
sit
مِنۡهَا
there in
مَقَـٰ عِدَ
positions
لِلسَّمۡعِۖ
for hearing
فَمَن
but (he) who
listens
now
يَجِدۡ
will find
لَهُۥ
for him
شِهَابًا
a flaming fire
waiting
And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing,1 but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.
72:10
وَأَنّ َا
And that we
لَا
not
نَدۡ رِىٓ
we know
أَشَرٌّ
whether evil
أُرِيدَ
is intended
بِمَن
for (those) who
(are) in
the earth
أَمۡ
or
أَرَادَ
intends
بِهِمۡ
for them
رَبُّهُمۡ
their Lord
رَشَدًا
١٠a right path
And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course.
72:11
وَأَنّ َا
And that [we]
مِنّ َا
among us
(are) the righteous
وَمِنّ َا
and among us
دُونَ
(are) other than
ذٰ لِكَۖ
that
كُنّ َا
We
طَرَا ٓئِقَ
(are on) ways
قِدَدًا
١١different
And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways.1
72:12
وَأَنّ َا
And that we
ظَنَنّ َآ
[we] have become certain
أَن
that
never
we will cause failure
(to) Allah
فِى
in
the earth
وَلَن
and never
we can escape Him
هَرَبًا
١٢(by) flight
And we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allāh upon earth, nor can we escape Him by flight.
72:13
وَأَنّ َا
And that [we]
لَمّ َا
when
سَمِعۡنَا
we heard
the Guidance
ءَامَنّ َا
we believed
بِهِۦ ۖ
in it
فَمَن
And whoever
believes
in his Lord
فَلَا
then not
يَخَافُ
he will fear
بَخۡسًا
any loss
and not
رَهَقًا
١٣any burden
And when we heard the guidance [i.e., the Qur’ān], we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden.1
72:14
وَأَنّ َا
And that we
مِنّ َا
among us
(are) Muslims
وَمِنّ َا
and among us
(are) unjust
فَمَنۡ
And whoever
أَسۡلَمَ
submits
فَأُوۡ لَـٰٓ ئِكَ
then those
تَحَرَّوۡاۡ
have sought
رَشَدًا
١٤(the) right path
And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allāh], and among us are the unjust.1 And whoever has become Muslim - those have sought out the right course.
72:15
وَأَمّ َا
And as for
the unjust
فَكَانُواۡ
they will be
لِجَهَنّ َمَ
for Hell
حَطَبًا
١٥firewood
But as for the unjust, they will be, for Hell, firewood.'
72:16
وَأَلَّوِ
And that if
they had remained
عَلَى
on
the Way
لَأَسۡقَيۡنَـٰ هُم
surely We (would) have given them to drink
water
غَدَقًا
١٦(in) abundance
And [Allāh revealed] that if they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant rain [i.e., provision].
72:17
لِّنَفۡتِنَهُمۡ
That We might test them
فِيهِۚ
therein
وَمَن
And whoever
turns away
عَن
from
the Remembrance
رَبِّهِۦ
(of) his Lord
يَسۡلُكۡهُ
He will make him enter
عَذَابًا
a punishment
severe
So We might test them therein. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord1 He will put into arduous punishment.
72:18
وَأَنّ َ
And that
the masjids
لِلَّهِ
(are) for Allah
فَلَا
so (do) not
تَدۡ عُواۡ
call
مَعَ
with
Allah
أَحَدًا
١٨anyone
And [He revealed] that the masjids1 are for Allāh, so do not invoke2 with Allāh anyone.
72:19
وَأَنّ َهُۥ
And that
لَمّ َا
when
قَامَ
stood up
عَبۡ دُ
(the) slave
(of) Allah
يَدۡ عُوهُ
calling (upon) Him
كَادُواۡ
they almost
يَكُونُونَ
became
عَلَيۡهِ
around him
لِبَدًا
١٩a compacted mass
And that when the Servant [i.e., Prophet] of Allāh stood up supplicating Him, they almost became about him a compacted mass."1
72:20
قُلۡ
Say
إِنّ َمَآ
Only
أَدۡ عُواۡ
I call upon
رَبِّى
my Lord
وَلَآ
and not
أُشۡرِكُ
I associate
بِهِۦٓ
with Him
أَحَدًا
٢٠anyone
Say, [O Muḥammad], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone."
72:21
قُلۡ
Say
إِنّ ِى
Indeed, I
لَآ
(do) not
أَمۡلِكُ
possess
لَكُمۡ
for you
ضَرًّا
any harm
and not
رَشَدًا
٢١right path
Say, "Indeed, I do not possess for you [the power of] harm or right direction."
72:22
قُلۡ
Say
إِنّ ِى
Indeed I
لَن
never
can protect me
مِنَ
from
Allah
أَحَدٌ
anyone
and never
أَجِدَ
can I find
مِن
from
besides Him
مُلۡتَحَدًا
٢٢any refuge
Say, "Indeed, there will never protect me from Allāh anyone [if I should disobey], nor will I find in other than Him a refuge.
72:23
إِلَّا
But
بَلَـٰ غًا
(the) notification
from
Allah
وَرِسَـٰ لَـٰ تِهِۦ ۚ
and His Messages
وَمَن
And whoever
disobeys
Allah
وَرَسُولَهُۥ
and His Messenger
فَإِنّ َ
then indeed
لَهُۥ
for him
نَارَ
(is the) Fire
جَهَنّ َمَ
(of) Hell
خَـٰ لِدِينَ
(they will) abide
فِيهَآ
therein
أَبَدًا
٢٣forever
But [I have for you] only notification from Allāh, and His messages." And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever.
72:24
حَتَّىٰٓ
Until
إِذَا
when
رَأَوۡاۡ
they see
مَا
what
يُوعَدُونَ
they are promised
فَسَيَعۡلَمُونَ
then they will know
مَنۡ
who
أَضۡعَفُ
(is) weaker
نَاصِرًا
(in) helpers
and fewer
عَدَدًا
٢٤(in) number
[The disbelievers continue] until, when they see that which they are promised, then they will know who is weaker in helpers and less in number.
72:25
قُلۡ
Say
إِنۡ
Not
أَدۡ رِىٓ
I know
أَقَرِيبٌ
whether is near
what
تُوعَدُونَ
you are promised
أَمۡ
or (whether)
يَجۡ عَلُ
will appoint
لَهُۥ
for it
رَبِّىٓ
my Lord
أَمَدًا
٢٥a (distant) term
Say, "I do not know if what you are promised is near or if my Lord will grant for it a [long] period."
72:26
عَـٰ لِمُ
(The) All-Knower
(of) the unseen
فَلَا
so not
يُظۡهِرُ
He reveals
عَلَىٰ
from
غَيۡبِهِۦٓ
His unseen
أَحَدًا
٢٦(to) anyone
[He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone
72:27
إِلَّا
Except
مَنِ
whom
He has approved
مِن
of
a Messenger
and indeed, He
يَسۡلُكُ
makes to march
مِنۢ
from
before
يَدَيۡهِ
him
وَمِنۡ
and from
خَلۡفِهِۦ
behind him
رَصَدًا
٢٧a guard
Except whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before him [i.e., each messenger] and behind him observers1
72:28
لِّيَعۡلَمَ
That He may make evident
أَن
that
indeed
أَبۡ لَغُواۡ
they have conveyed
رِسَـٰ لَـٰ تِ
(the) Messages
رَبِّهِمۡ
(of) their Lord
وَأَحَاطَ
and He has encompassed
بِمَا
what
لَدَيۡهِمۡ
(is) with them
وَأَحۡصَىٰ
and He takes account
كُلَّ
(of) all
شَىۡءٍ
things
عَدَدَۢا
٢٨(in) number
That he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] may know1 that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord; and He has encompassed whatever is with them and has enumerated all things in number.
