عَشۡرٍ
٢ten
And [by] ten nights1
89:3
وَٱ ل شَّفۡعِ
And the even
وَٱ لۡوَتۡرِ
٣and the odd
And [by] the even [number] and the odd
89:4
وَٱ لَّيۡلِ
And the night
إِذَا
when
يَسۡرِ
٤it passes
And [by] the night when it passes,
89:5
هَلۡ
Is
فِى
in
ذٰ لِكَ
that
قَسَمٌ
(not) an oath
for those
حِجۡ رٍ
٥who understand
Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?1
89:6
أَلَمۡ
Did not
تَرَ
you see
كَيۡفَ
how
فَعَلَ
dealt
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
بِعَا د ٍ
٦with Aad
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿAad -
89:7
إِرَمَ
Iram
ذَاتِ
possessors (of)
lofty pillars
[With] Iram1 - who had lofty pillars,2
89:8
ٱلَّتِى
Which
لَمۡ
not
يُخۡلَقۡ
had been created
مِثۡلُهَا
like them
فِى
in
the cities
The likes of whom had never been created in the land?
89:9
وَثَمُودَ
And Thamud
who
جَابُواۡ
carved out
the rocks
بِٱ لۡوَا د ِ
٩in the valley
And [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
89:10
وَفِرۡعَوۡنَ
And Firaun
ذِى
owner of
stakes
And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?1
89:11
ٱلَّذِينَ
Who
طَغَوۡاۡ
transgressed
فِى
in
the lands
[All of] whom oppressed within the lands
89:12
فَأَكۡثَرُواۡ
And (made) much
فِيهَا
therein
corruption
And increased therein the corruption.
89:13
فَصَبَّ
So poured
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
on them
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
سَوۡطَ
scourge
عَذَا ب ٍ
١٣(of) punishment
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
89:14
إِنّ َ
Indeed
رَبَّكَ
your Lord
لَبِٱ لۡمِرۡصَا د ِ
١٤(is) surely Ever Watchful
Indeed, your Lord is in observation.
89:15
فَأَمّ َا
And as for
man
إِذَا
when
مَا
does
try him
رَبُّهُۥ
his Lord
فَأَكۡرَمَهُۥ
and is generous to him
وَنَعَّمَهُۥ
and favors him
فَيَقُولُ
he says
رَبِّىٓ
My Lord
أَكۡرَمَنِ
١٥has honored me
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."1
89:16
وَأَمّ َآ
But
إِذَا
when
مَا
does
He try him
فَقَدَرَ
and restricts
عَلَيۡهِ
for him
رِزۡقَهُۥ
his provision
فَيَقُولُ
then he says
رَبِّىٓ
My Lord
أَهَـٰ نَنِ
١٦(has) humiliated me
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
89:17
كَلَّاۖ
Nay
بَل
But
لَّا
not
تُكۡرِمُونَ
you honor
the orphan
No!1 But you do not honor the orphan
89:18
وَلَا
And not
تَحَـٰٓ ضُّونَ
you feel the urge
عَلَىٰ
to
طَعَامِ
feed
the poor
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.
89:19
وَتَأۡكُلُونَ
And you consume
the inheritance
أَكۡلاً
devouring
altogether
And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,1
89:20
وَتُحِبُّونَ
And you love
wealth
حُبًّا
(with) love
immense
And you love wealth with immense love.
89:21
كَلَّآ
Nay
إِذَا
When
دُكَّتِ
is leveled
the earth
دَكًّا
pounded
(and) crushed
No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed
89:22
وَجَا ٓءَ
And comes
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
وَٱ لۡمَلَكُ
and the Angels
صَفًّا
rank
(upon) rank
And your Lord has come1 and the angels, rank upon rank,
89:23
وَجِاۡ ىٓ ءَ
And is brought
يَوۡمَئِذِۭ
that Day
Hell
يَوۡمَئِذٍ
That Day
will remember
man
وَأَنّ َىٰ
but how
لَهُ
(will be) for him
the remembrance
And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but how [i.e., what good] to him will be the remembrance?
89:24
يَقُولُ
He will say
يَـٰ لَيۡتَنِى
O I wish
قَدَّمۡتُ
I had sent forth
لِحَيَاتِى
٢٤for my life
He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."1
89:25
فَيَوۡمَئِذٍ
So that Day
not
يُعَذِّبُ
will punish
عَذَابَهُۥٓ
(as) His punishment
أَحَد ٌ
٢٥anyone
So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,
89:26
وَلَا
And not
يُوثِقُ
will bind
وَثَاقَهُۥٓ
(as) His binding
أَحَد ٌ
٢٦anyone
And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].
89:27
يَـٰٓ أَيَّتُهَا
O
soul
who is satisfied
[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,
89:28
ٱرۡجِعِىٓ
Return
إِلَىٰ
to
رَبِّكِ
your Lord
رَاضِيَةً
well pleased
and pleasing
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],
89:29
فَٱ دۡ خُلِى
So enter
فِى
among
عِبَـٰ دِى
٢٩My slaves
And enter among My [righteous] servants
89:30
وَٱ دۡ خُلِى
And enter
جَنّ َتِى
٣٠My Paradise
And enter My Paradise."
