2 Surahs159 Versesجزء 9
7:88
۞قَالَ
Said
ٱلۡمَلَأُ
the chiefs
ٱلَّذِينَ
(of) those who
ٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواۡ
were arrogant
مِن
among
قَوۡمِهِۦ
his people
لَنُخۡرِجَنَّكَ
We will surely drive you out
يَـٰشُعَيۡبُ
O Shuaib
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those who
ءَامَنُواۡ
(have) believed
مَعَكَ
with you
مِن
from
قَرۡيَتِنَآ
our city
أَوۡ
or
لَتَعُودُنَّ
you must return
فِى
to
مِلَّتِنَا‌ۚ
our religion
قَالَ
He said
أَوَلَوۡ
Even if
كُنَّا
we are
كَـٰرِهِينَ
(the) ones who hate (it)
٨٨
Said the eminent ones who were arrogant among his people, "We will surely evict you, O Shuʿayb, and those who have believed with you from our city, or you must return to our religion." He said, "Even if we were unwilling?
7:89
قَدِ
Verily
ٱفۡتَرَيۡنَا
we would have fabricated
عَلَى
against
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
كَذِبًا
a lie
إِنۡ
if
عُدۡنَا
we returned
فِى
in
مِلَّتِكُم
your religion
بَعۡدَ
after
إِذۡ
[when]
نَجَّـٰنَا
saved us
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
مِنۡهَا‌ۚ
from it
وَمَا
And not
يَكُونُ
it is
لَنَآ
for us
أَن
that
نَّعُودَ
we return
فِيهَآ
in it
إِلَّآ
except
أَن
that
يَشَآءَ
wills
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
رَبُّنَا‌ۚ
our Lord
وَسِعَ
Encompasses
رَبُّنَا
(by) Our Lord
كُلَّ
every
شَىۡءٍ
thing
عِلۡمًا‌ۚ
(in) knowledge
عَلَى
Upon
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
تَوَكَّلۡنَا‌ۚ
we put our trust
رَبَّنَا
Our Lord
ٱفۡتَحۡ
Decide
بَيۡنَنَا
between us
وَبَيۡنَ
and between
قَوۡمِنَا
our people
بِٱلۡحَقِّ
in truth
وَأَنتَ
and You
خَيۡرُ
(are the) Best
ٱلۡفَـٰتِحِينَ
(of) those who Decide
٨٩
We would have invented against Allāh a lie if we returned to your religion after Allāh had saved us from it. And it is not for us to return to it except that Allāh, our Lord, should will. Our Lord has encompassed all things in knowledge. Upon Allāh we have relied. Our Lord, decide between us and our people in truth, and You are the best of those who give decision."
7:90
وَقَالَ
And said
ٱلۡمَلَأُ
the chiefs
ٱلَّذِينَ
(of) those who
كَفَرُواۡ
disbelieved
مِن
among
قَوۡمِهِۦ
his people
لَئِنِ
If
ٱتَّبَعۡتُمۡ
you follow
شُعَيۡبًا
Shuaib
إِنَّكُمۡ
indeed, you
إِذًا
then
لَّخَـٰسِرُونَ
(will be) certainly losers
٩٠
Said the eminent ones who disbelieved among his people, "If you should follow Shuʿayb, indeed, you would then be losers."
7:91
فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ
Then seized them
ٱلرَّجۡفَةُ
the earthquake
فَأَصۡبَحُواۡ
then they became
فِى
in
دَارِهِمۡ
their home(s)
جَـٰثِمِينَ
fallen prone
٩١
So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone.
7:92
ٱلَّذِينَ
Those who
كَذَّبُواۡ
denied
شُعَيۡبًا
Shuaib
كَأَن
(became) as if
لَّمۡ
not
يَغۡنَوۡاۡ
they (had) lived
فِيهَا‌ۚ
therein
ٱلَّذِينَ
Those who
كَذَّبُواۡ
denied
شُعَيۡبًا
Shuaib
كَانُواۡ
they were
هُمُ
them
ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِينَ
the losers
٩٢
Those who denied Shuʿayb - it was as though they had never resided there. Those who denied Shuʿayb - it was they who were the losers.
7:93
فَتَوَلَّىٰ
So he turned away
عَنۡهُمۡ
from them
وَقَالَ
and said
يَـٰقَوۡمِ
O my people
لَقَدۡ
Verily
أَبۡلَغۡتُكُمۡ
I (have) conveyed to you
رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ
(the) Messages
رَبِّى
(of) my Lord
وَنَصَحۡتُ
and advised
لَكُمۡ‌ۖ
[to] you
فَكَيۡفَ
So how could
ءَاسَىٰ
I grieve
عَلَىٰ
for
قَوۡمٍ
a people
كَـٰفِرِينَ
(who are) disbelievers
٩٣
And he [i.e., Shuʿayb] turned away from them and said, "O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the messages of my Lord and advised you, so how could I grieve for a disbelieving people?"
7:94
وَمَآ
And not
أَرۡسَلۡنَا
We sent
فِى
in
قَرۡيَةٍ
a city
مِّن
any
نَّبِىٍّ
Prophet
إِلَّآ
except
أَخَذۡنَآ
We seized
أَهۡلَهَا
its people
بِٱلۡبَأۡسَآءِ
with adversity
وَٱلضَّرَّآءِ
and hardship
لَعَلَّهُمۡ
so that they may
يَضَّرَّعُونَ
(become) humble
٩٤
And We sent to no city a prophet [who was denied] except that We seized its people with poverty and hardship that they might humble themselves [to Allāh].
7:95
ثُمَّ
Then
بَدَّلۡنَا
We changed
مَكَانَ
(in) place
ٱلسَّيِّئَةِ
(of) the bad
ٱلۡحَسَنَةَ
the good
حَتَّىٰ
until
عَفَواۡ
they increased
وَّقَالُواۡ
and said
قَدۡ
Verily
مَسَّ
(had) touched
ءَابَآءَنَا
our forefathers
ٱلضَّرَّآءُ
the adversity
وَٱلسَّرَّآءُ
and the ease
فَأَخَذۡنَـٰهُم
So We seized them
بَغۡتَةً
suddenly
وَهُمۡ
while they
لَا
(did) not
يَشۡعُرُونَ
perceive
٩٥
Then We exchanged in place of the bad [condition], good, until they increased [and prospered] and said, "Our fathers [also] were touched with hardship and ease."1 So We seized them suddenly while they did not perceive.2
7:96
وَلَوۡ
And if
أَنَّ
[that]
أَهۡلَ
people
ٱلۡقُرَىٰٓ
(of) the cities
ءَامَنُواۡ
(had) believed
وَٱتَّقَوۡاۡ
and feared Allah
لَفَتَحۡنَا
surely We (would have) opened
عَلَيۡهِم
upon them
بَرَكَـٰتٍ
blessings
مِّنَ
from
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
the heaven
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ
and the earth
وَلَـٰكِن
but
كَذَّبُواۡ
they denied
فَأَخَذۡنَـٰهُم
So We seized them
بِمَا
for what
كَانُواۡ
they used to
يَكۡسِبُونَ
earn
٩٦
And if only the people of the cities had believed and feared Allāh, We would have opened [i.e., bestowed] upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth; but they denied [the messengers], so We seized them for what they were earning.1
7:97
أَفَأَمِنَ
Then did feel secure
أَهۡلُ
(the) people
ٱلۡقُرَىٰٓ
(of) the cities
أَن
that
يَأۡتِيَهُم
comes to them
بَأۡسُنَا
Our punishment
بَيَـٰتًا
(at) night
وَهُمۡ
while they
نَآئِمُونَ
(were) asleep
٩٧
Then, did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them at night while they were asleep?
7:98
أَوَأَمِنَ
Or felt secure
أَهۡلُ
(the) people
ٱلۡقُرَىٰٓ
(of) the cities
أَن
that
يَأۡتِيَهُم
comes to them
بَأۡسُنَا
Our punishment
ضُحًى
(in) daylight
وَهُمۡ
while they
يَلۡعَبُونَ
(were) playing
٩٨
Or did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them in the morning while they were at play?1
7:99
أَفَأَمِنُواۡ
Then did they feel secure
مَكۡرَ
(from the) plan
ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ
(of) Allah
فَلَا
But not
يَأۡمَنُ
feel secure
مَكۡرَ
(from the) plan
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
إِلَّا
except
ٱلۡقَوۡمُ
the people
ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ
(who are) the losers
٩٩
Then, did they feel secure from the plan of Allāh? But no one feels secure from the plan of Allāh except the losing people.
7:100
أَوَلَمۡ
Would it not
يَهۡدِ
guide
لِلَّذِينَ
[for] those who
يَرِثُونَ
inherit
ٱلۡأَرۡضَ
the land
مِنۢ
from
بَعۡدِ
after
أَهۡلِهَآ
its people
أَن
that
لَّوۡ
if
نَشَآءُ
We willed
أَصَبۡنَـٰهُم
We (could) afflict them
بِذُنُوبِهِمۡ‌ۚ
for their sins
وَنَطۡبَعُ
and We put a seal
عَلَىٰ
over
قُلُوبِهِمۡ
their hearts
فَهُمۡ
so they
لَا
(do) not
يَسۡمَعُونَ
hear
١٠٠
Has it not become clear to those who inherited the earth after its [previous] people that if We willed, We could afflict them for their sins? But We seal over their hearts so they do not hear.1
7:101
تِلۡكَ
These
ٱلۡقُرَىٰ
(were) the cities
نَقُصُّ
We relate
عَلَيۡكَ
to you
مِنۡ
of
أَنۢبَآئِهَا‌ۚ
their news
وَلَقَدۡ
And certainly
جَآءَتۡهُمۡ
came to them
رُسُلُهُم
their Messengers
بِٱلۡبَيِّنَـٰتِ
with clear proofs
فَمَا
but not
كَانُواۡ
they were
لِيُؤۡمِنُواۡ
to believe
بِمَا
in what
كَذَّبُواۡ
they (had) denied
مِن
from
قَبۡلُ‌ۚ
before
كَذٰلِكَ
Thus
يَطۡبَعُ
(has been) put a seal
ٱللَّهُ
(by) Allah
عَلَىٰ
on
قُلُوبِ
(the) hearts
ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِينَ
(of) the disbelievers
١٠١
Those cities - We relate to you, [O Muḥammad], some of their news. And certainly did their messengers come to them with clear proofs, but they were not to believe in that which they had denied before.1 Thus does Allāh seal over the hearts of the disbelievers.
7:102
وَمَا
And not
وَجَدۡنَا
We found
لِأَكۡثَرِهِم
for most of them
مِّنۡ
any
عَهۡدٍ‌ۖ
covenant
وَإِن
But
وَجَدۡنَآ
We found
أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ
most of them
لَفَـٰسِقِينَ
certainly, defiantly disobedient
١٠٢
And We did not find for most of them any covenant;1 but indeed, We found most of them defiantly disobedient.
7:103
ثُمَّ
Then
بَعَثۡنَا
We sent
مِنۢ
from
بَعۡدِهِم
after them
مُّوسَىٰ
Musa
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِنَآ
with Our Signs
إِلَىٰ
to
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
Firaun
وَمَلَإِيۡهِۦ
and his chiefs
فَظَلَمُواۡ
But they were unjust
بِهَا‌ۖ
to them
فَٱنظُرۡ
So see
كَيۡفَ
how
كَانَ
was
عَـٰقِبَةُ
(the) end
ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِينَ
(of) the corrupters
١٠٣
Then We sent after them Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were unjust toward them.1 So see how was the end of the corrupters.
7:104
وَقَالَ
And said
مُوسَىٰ
Musa
يَـٰفِرۡعَوۡنُ
O Firaun
إِنِّى
Indeed, I am
رَسُولٌ
a Messenger
مِّن
from
رَّبِّ
(the) Lord
ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ
(of) the worlds
١٠٤
And Moses said, "O Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds
7:105
حَقِيقٌ
Obligated
عَلَىٰٓ
on
أَن
that
لَّآ
not
أَقُولَ
I say
عَلَى
about
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
إِلَّا
except
ٱلۡحَقَّ‌ۚ
the truth
قَدۡ
Verily
جِئۡتُكُم
I (have) come to you
بِبَيِّنَةٍ
with a clear Sign
مِّن
from
رَّبِّكُمۡ
your Lord
فَأَرۡسِلۡ
so send
مَعِىَ
with me
بَنِىٓ
(the) Children
إِسۡرٰٓءِيلَ
(of) Israel
١٠٥
[Who is] obligated not to say about Allāh except the truth. I have come to you with clear evidence from your Lord, so send with me the Children of Israel."1
7:106
قَالَ
He said
إِن
If
كُنتَ
you have
جِئۡتَ
come
بِـَٔـايَةٍ
with a Sign
فَأۡتِ
then bring
بِهَآ
it
إِن
if
كُنتَ
you are
مِنَ
of
ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
the truthful
١٠٦
[Pharaoh] said, "If you have come with a sign, then bring it forth, if you should be of the truthful."
7:107
فَأَلۡقَىٰ
So he threw
عَصَاهُ
his staff
فَإِذَا
and suddenly
هِىَ
it
ثُعۡبَانٌ
(was) a serpent
مُّبِينٌ
manifest
١٠٧
So he [i.e., Moses] threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent, manifest.1
7:108
وَنَزَعَ
And he drew out
يَدَهُۥ
his hand
فَإِذَا
and suddenly
هِىَ
it
بَيۡضَآءُ
(was) white
لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَ
for the observers
١٠٨
And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white [with radiance] for the observers.
7:109
قَالَ
Said
ٱلۡمَلَأُ
the chiefs
مِن
of
قَوۡمِ
(the) people
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
(of) Firaun
إِنَّ
Indeed
هَـٰذَا
this
لَسَـٰحِرٌ
(is) surely a magician
عَلِيمٌ
learned
١٠٩
Said the eminent among the people of Pharaoh, "Indeed, this is a learned magician
7:110
يُرِيدُ
He wants
أَن
to
يُخۡرِجَكُم
drive you out
مِّنۡ
from
أَرۡضِكُمۡ‌ۖ
your land
فَمَاذَا
so what
تَأۡمُرُونَ
(do) you instruct
١١٠
Who wants to expel you from your land [through magic], so what do you instruct?"
7:111
قَالُوٓاۡ
They said
أَرۡجِهۡ
Postpone him
وَأَخَاهُ
and his brother
وَأَرۡسِلۡ
and send
فِى
in
ٱلۡمَدَآئِنِ
the cities
حَـٰشِرِينَ
gatherers
١١١
They said,1 "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers
7:112
يَأۡتُوكَ
They (will) bring to you
بِكُلِّ
[with] every
سَـٰحِرٍ
magician
عَلِيمٍ
learned
١١٢
Who will bring you every learned magician."
7:113
وَجَآءَ
So came
ٱلسَّحَرَةُ
the magicians
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
(to) Firaun
قَالُوٓاۡ
They said
إِنَّ
Indeed
لَنَا
for us
لَأَجۡرًا
surely (will be) a reward
إِن
if
كُنَّا
we are
نَحۡنُ
[we]
ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِينَ
the victors
١١٣
And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, "Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant."
7:114
قَالَ
He said
نَعَمۡ
Yes
وَإِنَّكُمۡ
and indeed you
لَمِنَ
surely (will be) of
ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِينَ
the ones who are near
١١٤
He said, "Yes, and, [moreover], you will be among those made near [to me]."
7:115
قَالُواۡ
They said
يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ
O Musa
إِمَّآ
Whether
أَن
[that]
تُلۡقِىَ
you throw
وَإِمَّآ
or Whether
أَن
[that]
نَّكُونَ
we will be
نَحۡنُ
[we]
ٱلۡمُلۡقِينَ
the ones to throw
١١٥
They said, "O Moses, either you throw [your staff], or we will be the ones to throw [first]."
7:116
قَالَ
He said
أَلۡقُواۡ‌ۖ
Throw
فَلَمَّآ
Then when
أَلۡقَوۡاۡ
they threw
سَحَرُوٓاۡ
they bewitched
أَعۡيُنَ
(the) eyes
ٱلنَّاسِ
(of) the people
وَٱسۡتَرۡهَبُوهُمۡ
and terrified them
وَجَآءُو
and came (up)
بِسِحۡرٍ
with a magic
عَظِيمٍ
great
١١٦
He said, "Throw," and when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck terror into them, and they presented a great [feat of] magic.1
7:117
۞وَأَوۡحَيۡنَآ
And We inspired
إِلَىٰ
to
مُوسَىٰٓ
Musa
أَنۡ
that
أَلۡقِ
Throw
عَصَاكَ‌ۖ
your staff
فَإِذَا
and suddenly
هِىَ
it
تَلۡقَفُ
swallow(ed)
مَا
what
يَأۡفِكُونَ
they (were) falsifying
١١٧
And We inspired to Moses, "Throw your staff," and at once it devoured what they were falsifying.
7:118
فَوَقَعَ
So was established
ٱلۡحَقُّ
the truth
وَبَطَلَ
and became futile
مَا
what
كَانُواۡ
they used to
يَعۡمَلُونَ
do
١١٨
So the truth was established, and abolished was what they were doing.
7:119
فَغُلِبُواۡ
So they were defeated
هُنَالِكَ
there
وَٱنقَلَبُواۡ
and returned
صَـٰغِرِينَ
humiliated
١١٩
And they [i.e., Pharaoh and his people] were overcome right there and became debased.
7:120
وَأُلۡقِىَ
And fell down
ٱلسَّحَرَةُ
the magicians
سَـٰجِدِينَ
prostrate
١٢٠
And the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allāh].
7:121
قَالُوٓاۡ
They said
ءَامَنَّا
We believe
بِرَبِّ
in (the) Lord
ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ
(of) the worlds
١٢١
They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds,
7:122
رَبِّ
Lord
مُوسَىٰ
(of) Musa
وَهَـٰرُونَ
and Harun
١٢٢
The Lord of Moses and Aaron."
7:123
قَالَ
Said
فِرۡعَوۡنُ
Firaun
ءَامَنتُم
You believed
بِهِۦ
in him
قَبۡلَ
before
أَنۡ
[that]
ءَاذَنَ
I give permission
لَكُمۡ‌ۖ
to you
إِنَّ
Indeed
هَـٰذَا
this
لَمَكۡرٌ
(is) surely a plot
مَّكَرۡتُمُوهُ
you have plotted it
فِى
in
ٱلۡمَدِينَةِ
the city
لِتُخۡرِجُواۡ
so that you may drive out
مِنۡهَآ
from it
أَهۡلَهَا‌ۖ
its people
فَسَوۡفَ
But soon
تَعۡلَمُونَ
you will know
١٢٣
Said Pharaoh, "You believed in him1 before I gave you permission. Indeed, this is a conspiracy which you conspired in the city to expel therefrom its people. But you are going to know.
7:124
لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ
I will surely cut off
أَيۡدِيَكُمۡ
your hands
وَأَرۡجُلَكُم
and your feet
مِّنۡ
of
خِلَـٰفٍ
opposite (sides)
ثُمَّ
Then
لَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ
I will surely crucify you
أَجۡمَعِينَ
all
١٢٤
I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides; then I will surely crucify you all."
7:125
قَالُوٓاۡ
They said
إِنَّآ
Indeed, we
إِلَىٰ
to
رَبِّنَا
our Lord
مُنقَلِبُونَ
(will) return
١٢٥
They said, "Indeed, to our Lord we will return.
7:126
وَمَا
And not
تَنقِمُ
you take revenge
مِنَّآ
from us
إِلَّآ
except
أَنۡ
that
ءَامَنَّا
we believed
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِ
in (the) Signs
رَبِّنَا
(of) our Lord
لَمَّا
when
جَآءَتۡنَا‌ۚ
they came to us
رَبَّنَآ
Our Lord
أَفۡرِغۡ
Pour
عَلَيۡنَا
upon us
صَبۡرًا
patience
وَتَوَفَّنَا
and cause us to die
مُسۡلِمِينَ
(as) Muslims
١٢٦
And you do not resent us except because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour upon us patience1 and let us die as Muslims [in submission to You]."
7:127
وَقَالَ
And said
ٱلۡمَلَأُ
the chiefs
مِن
of
قَوۡمِ
(the) people
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
(of) Firaun
أَتَذَرُ
Will you leave
مُوسَىٰ
Musa
وَقَوۡمَهُۥ
and his people
لِيُفۡسِدُواۡ
so that they cause corruption
فِى
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
the earth
وَيَذَرَكَ
and forsake you
وَءَالِهَتَكَ‌ۚ
and your gods
قَالَ
He said
سَنُقَتِّلُ
We will kill
أَبۡنَآءَهُمۡ
their sons
وَنَسۡتَحۡىِۦ
and we will let live
نِسَآءَهُمۡ
their women
وَإِنَّا
and indeed, we
فَوۡقَهُمۡ
over them
قَـٰهِرُونَ
(are) subjugators
١٢٧
And the eminent among the people of Pharaoh said, "Will you leave Moses and his people to cause corruption in the land and abandon you and your gods?" [Pharaoh] said, "We will kill their sons and keep their women alive; and indeed, we are subjugators over them."
7:128
قَالَ
Said
مُوسَىٰ
Musa
لِقَوۡمِهِ
to his people
ٱسۡتَعِينُواۡ
Seek help
بِٱللَّهِ
from Allah
وَٱصۡبِرُوٓاۡ‌ۖ
and be patient
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱلۡأَرۡضَ
the earth
لِلَّهِ
(belongs) to Allah
يُورِثُهَا
He causes to inherit it
مَن
whom
يَشَآءُ
He wills
مِنۡ
of
عِبَادِهِۦ‌ۖ
His servants
وَٱلۡعَـٰقِبَةُ
And the end
لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ
(is) for the righteous
١٢٨
Said Moses to his people, "Seek help through Allāh and be patient. Indeed, the earth belongs to Allāh. He causes to inherit it whom He wills of His servants. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous."
7:129
قَالُوٓاۡ
They said
أُوذِينَا
We have been harmed
مِن
from
قَبۡلِ
before
أَن
[that]
تَأۡتِيَنَا
you came to us
وَمِنۢ
from
بَعۡدِ
and after
مَا
[what]
جِئۡتَنَا‌ۚ
you have come to us
قَالَ
He said
عَسَىٰ
Perhaps
رَبُّكُمۡ
your Lord
أَن
[that]
يُهۡلِكَ
will destroy
عَدُوَّكُمۡ
your enemy
وَيَسۡتَخۡلِفَكُمۡ
and make you successors
فِى
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
the earth
فَيَنظُرَ
then see
كَيۡفَ
how
تَعۡمَلُونَ
you will do
١٢٩
They said, "We have been harmed before you came to us and after you have come to us." He said, "Perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy and grant you succession in the land and see how you will do."
7:130
وَلَقَدۡ
And certainly
أَخَذۡنَآ
We seized
ءَالَ
(the) people
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
(of) Firaun
بِٱلسِّنِينَ
with years (of famine)
وَنَقۡصٍ
and a deficit
مِّنَ
of
ٱلثَّمَرٰتِ
[the] fruits
لَعَلَّهُمۡ
so that they may
يَذَّكَّرُونَ
receive admonition
١٣٠
And We certainly seized1 the people of Pharaoh with years of famine and a deficiency in fruits that perhaps they would be reminded.
7:131
فَإِذَا
But when
جَآءَتۡهُمُ
came to them
ٱلۡحَسَنَةُ
the good
قَالُواۡ
they said
لَنَا
For us
هَـٰذِهِۦ‌ۖ
(is) this
وَإِن
And if
تُصِبۡهُمۡ
afflicts them
سَيِّئَةٌ
bad
يَطَّيَّرُواۡ
they ascribe evil omens
بِمُوسَىٰ
to Musa
وَمَن
and who
مَّعَهُۥٓ‌ۗ
(were) with him
أَلَآ
Behold
إِنَّمَا
Only
طَـٰٓئِرُهُمۡ
their evil omens
عِندَ
(are) with
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
وَلَـٰكِنَّ
but
أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ
most of them
لَا
(do) not
يَعۡلَمُونَ
know
١٣١
But when good [i.e., provision] came to them, they said, "This is ours [by right]." And if a bad [condition] struck them, they saw an evil omen in Moses and those with him. Unquestionably, their fortune is with Allāh, but most of them do not know.
7:132
وَقَالُواۡ
And they said
مَهۡمَا
Whatever
تَأۡتِنَا
you bring us
بِهِۦ
therewith
مِنۡ
of
ءَايَةٍ
(the) sign
لِّتَسۡحَرَنَا
so that you bewitch us
بِهَا
with it
فَمَا
then not
نَحۡنُ
we
لَكَ
(will be) in you
بِمُؤۡمِنِينَ
believers
١٣٢
And they said, "No matter what sign you bring us with which to bewitch us, we will not be believers in you."
7:133
فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا
So We sent
عَلَيۡهِمُ
on them
ٱلطُّوفَانَ
the flood
وَٱلۡجَرَادَ
and the locusts
وَٱلۡقُمَّلَ
and the lice
وَٱلضَّفَادِعَ
and the frogs
وَٱلدَّمَ
and the blood
ءَايَـٰتٍ
(as) signs
مُّفَصَّلَـٰتٍ
manifest
فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواۡ
but they showed arrogance
وَكَانُواۡ
and they were
قَوۡمًا
a people
مُّجۡرِمِينَ
criminal
١٣٣
So We sent upon them the flood and locusts and lice and frogs and blood as distinct signs, but they were arrogant and were a criminal people.
7:134
وَلَمَّا
And when
وَقَعَ
fell
عَلَيۡهِمُ
on them
ٱلرِّجۡزُ
the punishment
قَالُواۡ
they said
يَـٰمُوسَى
O Musa
ٱدۡعُ
Invoke
لَنَا
for us
رَبَّكَ
your Lord
بِمَا
by what
عَهِدَ
He has promised
عِندَكَ‌ۖ
to you
لَئِن
If
كَشَفۡتَ
you remove
عَنَّا
from us
ٱلرِّجۡزَ
the punishment
لَنُؤۡمِنَنَّ
surely, we will believe
لَكَ
[for] you
وَلَنُرۡسِلَنَّ
and surely, we will send
مَعَكَ
with you
بَنِىٓ
(the) Children
إِسۡرٰٓءِيلَ
(of) Israel
١٣٤
And when the punishment descended upon them, they said, "O Moses, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. If you [can] remove the punishment from us, we will surely believe you, and we will send with you the Children of Israel."
7:135
فَلَمَّا
But when
كَشَفۡنَا
We removed
عَنۡهُمُ
from them
ٱلرِّجۡزَ
the punishment
إِلَىٰٓ
till
أَجَلٍ
a (fixed) term
هُم
(which) they
بَـٰلِغُوهُ
were to reach [it]
إِذَا
then
هُمۡ
they
يَنكُثُونَ
broke (the word)
١٣٥
But when We removed the punishment from them until a term which they were to reach,1 then at once they broke their word.
7:136
فَٱنتَقَمۡنَا
So We took retribution
مِنۡهُمۡ
from them
فَأَغۡرَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ
and We drowned them
فِى
in
ٱلۡيَمِّ
the sea
بِأَنَّهُمۡ
because they
كَذَّبُواۡ
denied
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِنَا
Our Signs
وَكَانُواۡ
and they were
عَنۡهَا
to them
غَـٰفِلِينَ
heedless
١٣٦
So We took retribution from them, and We drowned them in the sea because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them.
7:137
وَأَوۡرَثۡنَا
And We made inheritors
ٱلۡقَوۡمَ
the people
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
كَانُواۡ
were
يُسۡتَضۡعَفُونَ
considered weak
مَشَـٰرِقَ
(the) eastern (parts)
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
(of) the land
وَمَغَـٰرِبَهَا
and the western (parts) of it
ٱلَّتِى
which
بَـٰرَكۡنَا
We blessed
فِيهَا‌ۖ
[in it]
وَتَمَّتۡ
And was fulfilled
كَلِمَتُ
(the) word
رَبِّكَ
(of) your Lord
ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ
the best
عَلَىٰ
for
بَنِىٓ
(the) Children
إِسۡرٰٓءِيلَ
(of) Israel
بِمَا
because
صَبَرُواۡ‌ۖ
they were patient
وَدَمَّرۡنَا
And We destroyed
مَا
what
كَانَ
used to
يَصۡنَعُ
make
فِرۡعَوۡنُ
Firaun
وَقَوۡمُهُۥ
and his people
وَمَا
and what
كَانُواۡ
they used to
يَعۡرِشُونَ
erect
١٣٧
And We caused the people who had been oppressed to inherit the eastern regions of the land and the western ones, which We had blessed. And the good word [i.e., decree] of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of what they had patiently endured. And We destroyed [all] that Pharaoh and his people were producing and what they had been building.
7:138
وَجَـٰوَزۡنَا
And We led across
بِبَنِىٓ
(the) Children
إِسۡرٰٓءِيلَ
(of) Israel
ٱلۡبَحۡرَ
the sea
فَأَتَوۡاۡ
Then they came
عَلَىٰ
upon
قَوۡمٍ
a people
يَعۡكُفُونَ
devoted
عَلَىٰٓ
to
أَصۡنَامٍ
idols
لَّهُمۡ‌ۚ
of theirs
قَالُواۡ
They said
يَـٰمُوسَى
O Musa
ٱجۡعَل
Make
لَّنَآ
for us
إِلَـٰهًا
a god
كَمَا
like what
لَهُمۡ
they have
ءَالِهَةٌ‌ۚ
gods
قَالَ
He said
إِنَّكُمۡ
Indeed, you
قَوۡمٌ
(are) a people
تَجۡهَلُونَ
ignorant
١٣٨
And We took the Children of Israel across the sea; then they came upon a people intent in devotion to [some] idols of theirs. They [the Children of Israel] said, "O Moses, make for us a god just as they have gods." He said, "Indeed, you are a people behaving ignorantly.
7:139
إِنَّ
Indeed
هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ
these
مُتَبَّرٌ
destroyed
مَّا
(is) what
هُمۡ
they
فِيهِ
(are) in it
وَبَـٰطِلٌ
and vain
مَّا
(is) what
كَانُواۡ
they used to
يَعۡمَلُونَ
do
١٣٩
Indeed, those [worshippers] - destroyed is that in which they are [engaged], and worthless is whatever they were doing."
7:140
قَالَ
He said
أَغَيۡرَ
Should other than
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
أَبۡغِيكُمۡ
I seek for you
إِلَـٰهًا
a god
وَهُوَ
while He
فَضَّلَكُمۡ
has preferred you
عَلَى
over
ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ
the worlds
١٤٠
He said, "Is it other than Allāh I should desire for you as a god1 while He has preferred you over the worlds?"
7:141
وَإِذۡ
And when
أَنجَيۡنَـٰكُم
We saved you
مِّنۡ
from
ءَالِ
(the) people
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
(of) Firaun
يَسُومُونَكُمۡ
who were afflicting you
سُوٓءَ
(with) worst
ٱلۡعَذَابِ‌ۖ
(of) torment
يُقَتِّلُونَ
they were killing
أَبۡنَآءَكُمۡ
your sons
وَيَسۡتَحۡيُونَ
and letting live
نِسَآءَكُمۡ‌ۚ
your women
وَفِى
And in
ذٰلِكُم
that
بَلَآءٌ
(was) a trial
مِّن
from
رَّبِّكُمۡ
your Lord
عَظِيمٌ
great
١٤١
And [recall, O Children of Israel], when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, [who were] afflicting you with the worst torment - killing your sons and keeping your women alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
7:142
۞وَوٰعَدۡنَا
And We appointed
مُوسَىٰ
(for) Musa
ثَلَـٰثِينَ
thirty
لَيۡلَةً
nights
وَأَتۡمَمۡنَـٰهَا
and We completed them
بِعَشۡرٍ
with ten (more)
فَتَمَّ
so was completed
مِيقَـٰتُ
(the) set term
رَبِّهِۦٓ
(of) his Lord
أَرۡبَعِينَ
(of) forty
لَيۡلَةً‌ۚ
night(s)
وَقَالَ
And said
مُوسَىٰ
Musa
لِأَخِيهِ
to his brother
هَـٰرُونَ
Harun
ٱخۡلُفۡنِى
Take my place
فِى
in
قَوۡمِى
my people
وَأَصۡلِحۡ
and do right
وَلَا
and (do) not
تَتَّبِعۡ
follow
سَبِيلَ
(the) way
ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِينَ
(of) the corrupters
١٤٢
And We made an appointment with Moses for thirty nights and perfected them by [the addition of] ten; so the term of his Lord was completed as forty nights. And Moses said to his brother Aaron, "Take my place among my people, do right [by them],1 and do not follow the way of the corrupters."
7:143
وَلَمَّا
And when
جَآءَ
came
مُوسَىٰ
Musa
لِمِيقَـٰتِنَا
to Our appointed place
وَكَلَّمَهُۥ
and spoke to him
رَبُّهُۥ
his Lord
قَالَ
he said
رَبِّ
O my Lord
أَرِنِىٓ
Show me
أَنظُرۡ
(that) I may look
إِلَيۡكَ‌ۚ
at You
قَالَ
He said
لَن
Never
تَرَٮٰنِى
you (can) see Me
وَلَـٰكِنِ
but
ٱنظُرۡ
look
إِلَى
at
ٱلۡجَبَلِ
the mountain
فَإِنِ
[then] if
ٱسۡتَقَرَّ
it remains
مَكَانَهُۥ
in its place
فَسَوۡفَ
then
تَرَٮٰنِى‌ۚ
you (will) see Me
فَلَمَّا
But when
تَجَلَّىٰ
revealed (His) Glory
رَبُّهُۥ
his Lord
لِلۡجَبَلِ
to the mountain
جَعَلَهُۥ
He made it
دَكًّا
crumbled to dust
وَخَرَّ
and fell down
مُوسَىٰ
Musa
صَعِقًا‌ۚ
unconscious
فَلَمَّآ
And when
أَفَاقَ
he recovered
قَالَ
he said
سُبۡحَـٰنَكَ
Glory be to You
تُبۡتُ
I turn (in repentance)
إِلَيۡكَ
to you
وَأَنَاۡ
and I am
أَوَّلُ
(the) first
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
(of) the believers
١٤٣
And when Moses arrived at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, "My Lord, show me [Yourself] that I may look at You." [Allāh] said, "You will not see Me,1 but look at the mountain; if it should remain in place, then you will see Me." But when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He rendered it level,2 and Moses fell unconscious. And when he awoke, he said, "Exalted are You! I have repented to You, and I am the first [among my people] of the believers."3
7:144
قَالَ
He said
يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ
O Musa
إِنِّى
Indeed, I
ٱصۡطَفَيۡتُكَ
have chosen you
عَلَى
over
ٱلنَّاسِ
the people
بِرِسَـٰلَـٰتِى
with My Messages
وَبِكَلَـٰمِى
and with My words
فَخُذۡ
So take
مَآ
what
ءَاتَيۡتُكَ
I have given you
وَكُن
and be
مِّنَ
among
ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ
the grateful
١٤٤
[Allāh] said, "O Moses, I have chosen you over the people with My messages and My words [to you]. So take what I have given you and be among the grateful."
7:145
وَكَتَبۡنَا
And We ordained (laws)
لَهُۥ
for him
فِى
in
ٱلۡأَلۡوَاحِ
the tablets
مِن
of
كُلِّ
every
شَىۡءٍ
thing
مَّوۡعِظَةً
an instruction
وَتَفۡصِيلاً
and explanation
لِّكُلِّ
for every
شَىۡءٍ
thing
فَخُذۡهَا
So take them
بِقُوَّةٍ
with firmness
وَأۡمُرۡ
and order
قَوۡمَكَ
your people
يَأۡخُذُواۡ
(to) take
بِأَحۡسَنِهَا‌ۚ
(the) best of it
سَأُوۡرِيكُمۡ
I will show you
دَارَ
(the) home
ٱلۡفَـٰسِقِينَ
(of) the defiantly disobedient
١٤٥
And We wrote for him on the tablets [something] of all things - instruction and explanation for all things, [saying], "Take them with determination and order your people to take the best of it. I will show you the home of the defiantly disobedient."1
7:146
سَأَصۡرِفُ
I will turn away
عَنۡ
from
ءَايَـٰتِىَ
My Signs
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
يَتَكَبَّرُونَ
are arrogant
فِى
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
the earth
بِغَيۡرِ
without
ٱلۡحَقِّ
[the] right
وَإِن
and if
يَرَوۡاۡ
they see
كُلَّ
every
ءَايَةٍ
sign
لَّا
not
يُؤۡمِنُواۡ
(will) they believe
بِهَا
in it
وَإِن
And if
يَرَوۡاۡ
they see
سَبِيلَ
(the) way
ٱلرُّشۡدِ
(of) the righteousness
لَا
not
يَتَّخِذُوهُ
(will) they take it
سَبِيلاً
(as) a way
وَإِن
but if
يَرَوۡاۡ
they see
سَبِيلَ
(the) way
ٱلۡغَىِّ
(of) [the] error
يَتَّخِذُوهُ
they will take it
سَبِيلاً‌ۚ
(as) a way
ذٰلِكَ
That
بِأَنَّهُمۡ
(is) because they
كَذَّبُواۡ
denied
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِنَا
Our Signs
وَكَانُواۡ
and they were
عَنۡهَا
of them
غَـٰفِلِينَ
heedless
١٤٦
I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right; and if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. And if they see the way of consciousness,1 they will not adopt it as a way; but if they see the way of error, they will adopt it as a way. That is because they have denied Our signs and they were heedless of them.
7:147
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those who
كَذَّبُواۡ
denied
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِنَا
Our Signs
وَلِقَآءِ
and (the) meeting
ٱلۡأَخِرَةِ
(of) the Hereafter
حَبِطَتۡ
worthless
أَعۡمَـٰلُهُمۡ‌ۚ
(are) their deeds
هَلۡ
Will
يُجۡزَوۡنَ
they be recompensed
إِلَّا
except
مَا
(for) what
كَانُواۡ
they used to
يَعۡمَلُونَ
do
١٤٧
Those who denied Our signs and the meeting of the Hereafter - their deeds have become worthless. Are they recompensed except for what they used to do?
7:148
وَٱتَّخَذَ
And took
قَوۡمُ
(the) people
مُوسَىٰ
(of) Musa
مِنۢ
from
بَعۡدِهِۦ
after him
مِنۡ
from
حُلِيِّهِمۡ
their ornaments
عِجۡلاً
a calf
جَسَدًا
an image
لَّهُۥ
[for] it
خُوَارٌ‌ۚ
(had) a lowing sound
أَلَمۡ
Did not
يَرَوۡاۡ
they see
أَنَّهُۥ
that it
لَا
(could) not
يُكَلِّمُهُمۡ
speak to them
وَلَا
and not
يَهۡدِيهِمۡ
guide them
سَبِيلاً‌ۘ
(to) a way
ٱتَّخَذُوهُ
They took it (for worship)
وَكَانُواۡ
and they were
ظَـٰلِمِينَ
wrongdoers
١٤٨
And the people of Moses made, after [his departure], from their ornaments a calf - an image having a lowing sound. Did they not see that it could neither speak to them nor guide them to a way? They took it [for worship], and they were wrongdoers.
7:149
وَلَمَّا
And when
سُقِطَ
(it was made to) fall
فِىٓ
into
أَيۡدِيهِمۡ
their hands
وَرَأَوۡاۡ
and they saw
أَنَّهُمۡ
that they
قَدۡ
(had) indeed
ضَلُّواۡ
gone astray
قَالُواۡ
they said
لَئِن
If
لَّمۡ
not
يَرۡحَمۡنَا
has Mercy on us
رَبُّنَا
Our Lord
وَيَغۡفِرۡ
and forgive
لَنَا
[for] us
لَنَكُونَنَّ
we will surely be
مِنَ
among
ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِينَ
the losers
١٤٩
And when regret overcame them1 and they saw that they had gone astray, they said, "If our Lord does not have mercy upon us and forgive us, we will surely be among the losers."
7:150
وَلَمَّا
And when
رَجَعَ
returned
مُوسَىٰٓ
Musa
إِلَىٰ
to
قَوۡمِهِۦ
his people
غَضۡبَـٰنَ
angry
أَسِفًا
and grieved
قَالَ
he said
بِئۡسَمَا
Evil is what
خَلَفۡتُمُونِى
you have done in my place
مِنۢ
from
بَعۡدِىٓ‌ۖ
after me
أَعَجِلۡتُمۡ
Were you impatient
أَمۡرَ
(over the) matter
رَبِّكُمۡ‌ۖ
(of) your Lord
وَأَلۡقَى
And he cast down
ٱلۡأَلۡوَاحَ
the tablets
وَأَخَذَ
and seized
بِرَأۡسِ
by head
أَخِيهِ
his brother
يَجُرُّهُۥٓ
dragging him
إِلَيۡهِ‌ۚ
to himself
قَالَ
He said
ٱبۡنَ
O son
أُمَّ
(of) my mother
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱلۡقَوۡمَ
the people
ٱسۡتَضۡعَفُونِى
considered me weak
وَكَادُواۡ
and were about to
يَقۡتُلُونَنِى
kill me
فَلَا
So (let) not
تُشۡمِتۡ
rejoice
بِىَ
over me
ٱلۡأَعۡدَآءَ
the enemies
وَلَا
and (do) not
تَجۡعَلۡنِى
place me
مَعَ
with
ٱلۡقَوۡمِ
the people
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
(who are) wrongdoing
١٥٠
And when Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved, he said, "How wretched is that by which you have replaced me after [my departure]. Were you impatient over the matter of your Lord?" And he threw down the tablets and seized his brother by [the hair of] his head, pulling him toward him. [Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, indeed the people overpowered me and were about to kill me, so let not the enemies rejoice over me1 and do not place me among the wrongdoing people."
7:151
قَالَ
He said
رَبِّ
O my Lord
ٱغۡفِرۡ
Forgive
لِى
me
وَلِأَخِى
and my brother
وَأَدۡخِلۡنَا
and admit us
فِى
into
رَحۡمَتِكَ‌ۖ
Your Mercy
وَأَنتَ
for You
أَرۡحَمُ
(are) the Most Merciful
ٱلرّٰحِمِينَ
(of) the merciful
١٥١
[Moses] said, "My Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the most merciful of the merciful."
7:152
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ٱتَّخَذُواۡ
took
ٱلۡعِجۡلَ
the calf
سَيَنَالُهُمۡ
will reach them
غَضَبٌ
wrath
مِّن
from
رَّبِّهِمۡ
their Lord
وَذِلَّةٌ
and humiliation
فِى
in
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ
the life
ٱلدُّنۡيَا‌ۚ
(of) the world
وَكَذٰلِكَ
And thus
نَجۡزِى
We recompense
ٱلۡمُفۡتَرِينَ
the ones who invent (falsehood)
١٥٢
Indeed, those who took the calf [for worship] will obtain anger from their Lord and humiliation in the life of this world, and thus do We recompense the inventors [of falsehood].
7:153
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those who
عَمِلُواۡ
do
ٱلسَّيِّـَٔـاتِ
the evil deeds
ثُمَّ
then
تَابُواۡ

رَّحِيمٌ
Most Merciful
١٥٣
But those who committed misdeeds and then repented after them and believed - indeed your Lord, thereafter, is Forgiving and Merciful.
7:154
وَلَمَّا
And when

their inscription

of their Lord

١٥٤
And when the anger subsided in Moses, he took up the tablets; and in their inscription was guidance and mercy for those who are fearful of their Lord.
7:155

and have mercy upon us
وَأَنتَ
and You
خَيۡرُ

(of) Forgivers
١٥٥
And Moses chose from his people seventy men for Our appointment.1 And when the earthquake seized them,2 he said, "My Lord, if You had willed, You could have destroyed them before and me [as well]. Would You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is not but Your trial by which You send astray whom You will and guide whom You will. You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us; and You are the best of forgivers.
7:156

And decree for us in this world [that which is] good and [also] in the Hereafter; indeed, we have turned back to You." [Allāh] said, "My punishment - I afflict with it whom I will, but My mercy encompasses all things." So I will decree it [especially] for those who fear Me and give zakāh and those who believe in Our verses-
7:157
ٱلَّذِينَ
Those who

١٥٧
Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written [i.e., described] in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and prohibits them from what is wrong and makes lawful for them what is good and forbids them from what is evil and relieves them of their burden1 and the shackles which were upon them.2 So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.

١٥٨
Say, [O Muḥammad], "O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allāh to you all, [from Him] to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death." So believe in Allāh and His Messenger, the unlettered prophet, who believes in Allāh and His words, and follow him that you may be guided.
7:159

And among the people of Moses is a community1 which guides by truth and by it establishes justice.

وَأَنزَلۡنَا
and We sent down
عَلَيۡهِمُ
upon them
ٱلۡمَنَّ
the manna

Eat

We have provided you

they wronged Us
وَلَـٰكِن
but
كَانُوٓاۡ
they were
أَنفُسَهُمۡ
(to) themselves
يَظۡلِمُونَ
doing wrong
١٦٠
And We divided them into twelve descendant tribes1 [as distinct] nations. And We inspired to Moses when his people implored him for water, "Strike with your staff the stone," and there gushed forth from it twelve springs. Every people [i.e., tribe] knew its watering place. And We shaded them with clouds and sent down upon them manna and quails, [saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you." And they wronged Us not, but they were [only] wronging themselves.
7:161
وَإِذۡ
And when
قِيلَ
it was said
لَهُمُ
to them
ٱسۡكُنُواۡ
Live
هَـٰذِهِ

Repentance

سُجَّدًا
prostrating
نَّغۡفِرۡ
We will forgive
لَكُمۡ
for you
خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِكُمۡ‌ۚ
your sins
سَنَزِيدُ
We will increase (reward)
ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ
(of) the good-doers
١٦١
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when it was said to them, "Dwell in this city [i.e., Jerusalem] and eat from it wherever you will and say, 'Relieve us of our burdens [i.e., sins],' and enter the gate bowing humbly; We will [then] forgive you your sins. We will increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward]."
7:162
فَبَدَّلَ
But changed
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ظَلَمُواۡ
wronged
مِنۡهُمۡ
among them
قَوۡلاً
word
غَيۡرَ
other than
ٱلَّذِى
(that) which
قِيلَ
was said
لَهُمۡ
to them
فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا
So We sent
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
upon them
رِجۡزًا
torment
مِّنَ
from
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
the sky
بِمَا
because
كَانُواۡ
they were
يَظۡلِمُونَ
doing wrong
١٦٢
But those who wronged among them changed [the words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them. So We sent upon them a punishment from the sky for the wrong that they were doing.
7:163
وَسۡــَٔلۡهُمۡ
And ask them
عَنِ
about
ٱلۡقَرۡيَةِ
the town
ٱلَّتِى
which
كَانَتۡ
was
حَاضِرَةَ
situated
ٱلۡبَحۡرِ
(by) the sea
إِذۡ
when
يَعۡدُونَ
they transgressed
فِى
in
ٱلسَّبۡتِ
the (matter of) Sabbath
إِذۡ
when
تَأۡتِيهِمۡ
came to them
حِيتَانُهُمۡ
their fish

not
يَسۡبِتُونَ‌ۙ
they had Sabbath
لَا

كَذٰلِكَ
Thus
نَبۡلُوهُم
We test them
بِمَا
because
كَانُواۡ
they were
يَفۡسُقُونَ
defiantly disobeying
١٦٣
And ask them about the town that was by the sea - when they transgressed in [the matter of] the sabbath - when their fish came to them openly on their sabbath day, and the day they had no sabbath they did not come to them. Thus did We give them trial because they were defiantly disobedient.
7:164
وَإِذۡ
And when
قَالَتۡ
said
أُمَّةٌ
a community
مِّنۡهُمۡ
among them
لِمَ
Why
تَعِظُونَ

قَوۡمًا‌ۙ
a people
ٱللَّهُ

عَذَابًا
(with) a punishment

severe
قَالُواۡ
They said
مَعۡذِرَةً
To be absolved
إِلَىٰ
before
رَبِّكُمۡ
your Lord
وَلَعَلَّهُمۡ
and that they may
يَتَّقُونَ
become righteous
١٦٤
And when a community among them said, "Why do you advise [or warn] a people whom Allāh is [about] to destroy or to punish with a severe punishment?" they [the advisors] said, "To be absolved before your Lord and perhaps they may fear Him."
7:165
فَلَمَّا
So when
نَسُواۡ
they forgot
مَا

أَنجَيۡنَا
We saved
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
يَنۡهَوۡنَ
forbade
عَنِ

ٱلسُّوٓءِ
the evil

and We seized
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ظَلَمُواۡ
wronged
بِعَذَابِۭ
with a punishment
بَــِٔيسِۭ
wretched
بِمَا
because
كَانُواۡ
they were
يَفۡسُقُونَ
defiantly disobeying
١٦٥
And when they [i.e., those advised] forgot that by which they had been reminded, We saved those who had forbidden evil and seized those who wronged, with a wretched punishment, because they were defiantly disobeying.
7:166
فَلَمَّا
So when
عَتَوۡاۡ
they exceeded all bounds

١٦٦
So when they were insolent about that which they had been forbidden, We said to them, "Be apes, despised."
7:167
وَإِذۡ
And when
تَأَذَّنَ
declared
رَبُّكَ

١٦٧
And [mention] when your Lord declared that He would surely [continue to] send upon them until the Day of Resurrection those who would afflict them with the worst torment. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.
7:168
وَقَطَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ
And We divided them
فِى
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
the earth
أُمَمًا‌ۖ

and the bad
لَعَلَّهُمۡ
so that they may
يَرۡجِعُونَ
return
١٦٨
And We divided them throughout the earth into nations. Of them some were righteous, and of them some were otherwise. And We tested them with good [times] and bad that perhaps they would return [to obedience].
7:169

١٦٩
And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities1 of this lower life and saying, "It will be forgiven for us." And if an offer like it2 comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture [i.e., the Torah] taken from them that they would not say about Allāh except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allāh, so will you not use reason?
7:170
وَٱلَّذِينَ

But those who hold fast to the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and establish prayer - indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of the reformers.
7:171

And [mention] when We raised the mountain above them as if it was a dark cloud and they were certain that it would fall upon them,1 [and Allāh said], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that you might fear Allāh."

بَعۡدِهِمۡ‌ۖ
after them
أَفَتُهۡلِكُنَا
So will You destroy us
بِمَا
for what
فَعَلَ
did
ٱلۡمُبۡطِلُونَ
the falsifiers
١٧٣
Or [lest] you say, "It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] with Allāh before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?"
7:174
وَكَذٰلِكَ
And thus
نُفَصِّلُ
We explain
ٱلۡأَيَـٰتِ
the Verses
وَلَعَلَّهُمۡ
so that they may
يَرۡجِعُونَ
return
١٧٤
And thus do We [explain in] detail the verses, and perhaps they will return.1
7:175
وَٱتۡلُ
And recite
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
to them
نَبَأَ
(the) story
ٱلَّذِىٓ
(of the) one whom
ءَاتَيۡنَـٰهُ
We gave [him]
ءَايَـٰتِنَا
Our Verses
فَٱنسَلَخَ
but he detached
مِنۡهَا
[from] them
فَأَتۡبَعَهُ
so followed him
ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنُ
the Shaitaan
فَكَانَ
and he became
مِنَ
of
ٱلۡغَاوِينَ
those gone astray
١٧٥
And recite to them, [O Muḥammad], the news of him1 to whom We gave [knowledge of] Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of the deviators.2
7:176
وَلَوۡ
And if
شِئۡنَا
We willed
لَرَفَعۡنَـٰهُ
surely, We (could) have raised him
بِهَا
with these
وَلَـٰكِنَّهُۥٓ
[and] but he
أَخۡلَدَ
adhered
إِلَى
to
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
the earth
وَٱتَّبَعَ
and followed
هَوَٮٰهُ‌ۚ
his (vain) desires
فَمَثَلُهُۥ
So his example
كَمَثَلِ
(is) like (the) example
ٱلۡكَلۡبِ
(of) the dog
إِن
if
تَحۡمِلۡ
you attack
عَلَيۡهِ
[on] him
يَلۡهَثۡ
he lolls out his tongue
أَوۡ
or
تَتۡرُكۡهُ
if you leave him
يَلۡهَث‌ۚ
he lolls out his tongue
ذّٰلِكَ
That
مَثَلُ
(is the) example
ٱلۡقَوۡمِ
(of) the people
ٱلَّذِينَ
who
كَذَّبُواۡ
denied
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِنَا‌ۚ
[in] Our Signs
فَٱقۡصُصِ
So relate
ٱلۡقَصَصَ
the story
لَعَلَّهُمۡ
so that they may
يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
reflect
١٧٦
And if We had willed, We could have elevated him thereby,1 but he adhered [instead] to the earth2 and followed his own desire. So his example is like that of the dog: if you chase him, he pants, or if you leave him, he [still] pants. That is the example of the people who denied Our signs.3 So relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought.
7:177
سَآءَ
Evil
مَثَلاً
(as) an example
ٱلۡقَوۡمُ
(are) the people
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
كَذَّبُواۡ
denied
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِنَا
Our Signs
وَأَنفُسَهُمۡ
and themselves
كَانُواۡ
they used to
يَظۡلِمُونَ
wrong
١٧٧
How evil an example [is that of] the people who denied Our signs and used to wrong themselves.
7:178
مَن
Whoever
يَهۡدِ
(is) guided
ٱللَّهُ
(by) Allah
فَهُوَ
then he
ٱلۡمُهۡتَدِى‌ۖ
(is) the guided one
وَمَن
while whoever
يُضۡلِلۡ
He lets go astray
فَأُوۡلَـٰٓئِكَ
then those
هُمُ
[they]
ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ
(are) the losers
١٧٨
Whoever Allāh guides - he is the [rightly] guided; and whoever He sends astray1 - it is those who are the losers.
7:179
وَلَقَدۡ
And certainly
ذَرَأۡنَا
We have created
لِجَهَنَّمَ
for Hell
كَثِيرًا
many
مِّنَ
of
ٱلۡجِنِّ
the jinn
وَٱلۡإِنسِ‌ۖ
and men
لَهُمۡ
For them
قُلُوبٌ
(are) hearts
لَّا
(but) not
يَفۡقَهُونَ
they understand
بِهَا
with them
وَلَهُمۡ
and for them
أَعۡيُنٌ
(are) eyes
لَّا
(but) not
يُبۡصِرُونَ
they see
بِهَا
with them
وَلَهُمۡ
and for them
ءَاذَانٌ
(are) ears
لَّا
(but) not
يَسۡمَعُونَ
they hear
بِهَآ‌ۚ
with them
أُوۡلَـٰٓئِكَ
Those
كَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ
(are) like cattle
بَلۡ
nay
هُمۡ
they
أَضَلُّ‌ۚ
(are) more astray
أُوۡلَـٰٓئِكَ
Those
هُمُ
they
ٱلۡغَـٰفِلُونَ
(are) the heedless
١٧٩
And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray.1 It is they who are the heedless.
7:180
وَلِلَّهِ
And for Allah
ٱلۡأَسۡمَآءُ
(are) the names
ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ
the most beautiful
فَٱدۡعُوهُ
so invoke Him
بِهَا‌ۖ
by them
وَذَرُواۡ
And leave
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
يُلۡحِدُونَ
deviate
فِىٓ
concerning
أَسۡمَـٰٓئِهِۦ‌ۚ
His names
سَيُجۡزَوۡنَ
They will be recompensed
مَا
for what
كَانُواۡ
they used to
يَعۡمَلُونَ
do
١٨٠
And to Allāh belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names.1 They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.
7:181
وَمِمَّنۡ
And of (those) whom
خَلَقۡنَآ
We have created
أُمَّةٌ
(is) a nation
يَهۡدُونَ
who guides
بِٱلۡحَقِّ
with the truth
وَبِهِۦ
and thereby
يَعۡدِلُونَ
they establish justice
١٨١
And among those We created is a community1 which guides by truth and thereby establishes justice.
7:182
وَٱلَّذِينَ
But those who
كَذَّبُواۡ
denied
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِنَا
Our Signs
سَنَسۡتَدۡرِجُهُم
We will gradually lead them
مِّنۡ
from
حَيۡثُ
where
لَا
not
يَعۡلَمُونَ
they know
١٨٢
But those who deny Our signs - We will progressively lead them [to destruction]1 from where they do not know.
7:183
وَأُمۡلِى
And I will give respite
لَهُمۡ‌ۚ
to them
إِنَّ
Indeed
كَيۡدِى
My plan
مَتِينٌ
(is) firm
١٨٣
And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.
7:184
أَوَلَمۡ
Do not
يَتَفَكَّرُواۡ‌ۗ
they reflect
مَا
Not
بِصَاحِبِهِم
in their companion
مِّن
[of]
جِنَّةٍ‌ۚ
(is) any madness
إِنۡ
Not
هُوَ
he
إِلَّا
(is) but
نَذِيرٌ
a warner
مُّبِينٌ
clear
١٨٤
Then do they not give thought? There is in their companion [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] no madness. He is not but a clear warner.
7:185
أَوَلَمۡ
Do not
يَنظُرُواۡ
they look
فِى
in
مَلَكُوتِ
(the) dominion
ٱلسَّمَـٰوٰتِ
(of) the heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ
and the earth
وَمَا
and what
خَلَقَ
has (been) created
ٱللَّهُ
(by) Allah
مِن
of
شَىۡءٍ
(every)thing
وَأَنۡ
and that
عَسَىٰٓ
perhaps
أَن
[that]
يَكُونَ
has
قَدِ
verily
ٱقۡتَرَبَ
come near
أَجَلُهُمۡ‌ۖ
their term
فَبِأَىِّ
So in what
حَدِيثِۭ
statement
بَعۡدَهُۥ
after this
يُؤۡمِنُونَ
will they believe
١٨٥
Do they not look into the realm of the heavens and the earth and everything that Allāh has created and [think] that perhaps their appointed time has come near? So in what statement [i.e., message] hereafter will they believe?
7:186
مَن
Whoever
يُضۡلِلِ
(is) let go astray
ٱللَّهُ
(by) Allah
فَلَا
then (there is) no
هَادِىَ
guide
لَهُۥ‌ۚ
for him
وَيَذَرُهُمۡ
And He leaves them
فِى
in
طُغۡيَـٰنِهِمۡ
their transgression
يَعۡمَهُونَ
wandering blindly
١٨٦
Whoever Allāh sends astray - there is no guide for him. And He leaves them in their transgression, wandering blindly.
7:187
يَسۡــَٔلُونَكَ
They ask you
عَنِ
about
ٱلسَّاعَةِ
the Hour
أَيَّانَ
when will be
مُرۡسَـٰهَا‌ۖ
its appointed time
قُلۡ
Say
إِنَّمَا
Only
عِلۡمُهَا
its knowledge
عِندَ
(is) with
رَبِّى‌ۖ
my Lord
لَا
no (one)
يُجَلِّيهَا
can reveal [it]
لِوَقۡتِهَآ
its time
إِلَّا
except
هُوَ‌ۚ
Him
ثَقُلَتۡ
It lays heavily
فِى
in
ٱلسَّمَـٰوٰتِ
the heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ‌ۚ
and the earth
لَا
Not
تَأۡتِيكُمۡ
will it come to you
إِلَّا
but
بَغۡتَةً‌ۗ
suddenly
يَسۡــَٔلُونَكَ
They ask you
كَأَنَّكَ
as if you
حَفِىٌّ
(were) well informed
عَنۡهَا‌ۖ
about it
قُلۡ
Say
إِنَّمَا
Only
عِلۡمُهَا
its knowledge
عِندَ
(is) with
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
وَلَـٰكِنَّ
but
أَكۡثَرَ
most
ٱلنَّاسِ
(of) the people
لَا
(do) not
يَعۡلَمُونَ
know
١٨٧
They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival?1 Say, "Its knowledge is only with my Lord. None will reveal its time except Him. It lays heavily2 upon the heavens and the earth. It will not come upon you except unexpectedly." They ask you as if you are familiar with it. Say, "Its knowledge is only with Allāh, but most of the people do not know."
7:188
قُل
Say
لَّآ
Not
أَمۡلِكُ
I have power
لِنَفۡسِى
for myself
نَفۡعًا
(to) benefit
وَلَا
and no
ضَرًّا
(power to) harm
إِلَّا
except
مَا
what
شَآءَ
wills
ٱللَّهُ‌ۚ
Allah
وَلَوۡ
And if
كُنتُ
I would
أَعۡلَمُ
know
ٱلۡغَيۡبَ
(of) the unseen
لَٱسۡتَكۡثَرۡتُ
surely I could have multiplied
مِنَ
of
ٱلۡخَيۡرِ
the good
وَمَا
and not
مَسَّنِىَ
(could) have touched me
ٱلسُّوٓءُ‌ۚ
the evil
إِنۡ
Not
أَنَاۡ
(am) I
إِلَّا
except
نَذِيرٌ
a warner
وَبَشِيرٌ
and a bearer of good tidings
لِّقَوۡمٍ
to a people
يُؤۡمِنُونَ
who believe
١٨٨
Say, "I hold not for myself [the power of] benefit or harm, except what Allāh has willed. And if I knew the unseen, I could have acquired much wealth, and no harm would have touched me. I am not except a warner and a bringer of good tidings to a people who believe."
7:189
۞هُوَ
He
ٱلَّذِى
(is) the One Who
خَلَقَكُم
created you
مِّن
from
نَّفۡسٍ
a soul
وٰحِدَةٍ
single
وَجَعَلَ
and made
مِنۡهَا
from it
زَوۡجَهَا
its mate
لِيَسۡكُنَ
that he might live
إِلَيۡهَا‌ۖ
with her
فَلَمَّا
And when
تَغَشَّـٰهَا
he covers her
حَمَلَتۡ
she carries
حَمۡلاً
a burden
خَفِيفًا
light
فَمَرَّتۡ
and continues
بِهِۦ‌ۖ
with it
فَلَمَّآ
But when
أَثۡقَلَت
she grows heavy
دَّعَوَا
they both invoke
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
رَبَّهُمَا
their Lord
لَئِنۡ
If
ءَاتَيۡتَنَا
You give us
صَـٰلِحًا
a righteous (child)
لَّنَكُونَنَّ
surely we will be
مِنَ
among
ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ
the thankful
١٨٩
It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he1 might dwell in security with her. And when he [i.e., man] covers her,2 she carries a light burden [i.e., a pregnancy] and continues therein. And when it becomes heavy, they both invoke Allāh, their Lord, "If You should give us a good3 [child], we will surely be among the grateful."
7:190
فَلَمَّآ
But when
ءَاتَـٰهُمَا
He gives them
صَـٰلِحًا
a good, (child)
جَعَلَا
they make
لَهُۥ
for Him
شُرَكَآءَ
partners
فِيمَآ
in what
ءَاتَـٰهُمَا‌ۚ
He has given them
فَتَعَـٰلَى
But exalted
ٱللَّهُ
(is) Allah
عَمَّا
above what
يُشۡرِكُونَ
they associate (with Him)
١٩٠
But when He gives them a good [child], they1 ascribe partners to Him concerning that which He has given them. Exalted is Allāh above what they associate with Him.
7:191
أَيُشۡرِكُونَ
Do they associate
مَا
what
لَا
(can) not
يَخۡلُقُ
create
شَيۡــًٔا
anything
وَهُمۡ
and they
يُخۡلَقُونَ
are created
١٩١
Do they associate with Him those who create nothing and they are [themselves] created?
7:192
وَلَا
And not
يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ
they are able
لَهُمۡ
to (give) them
نَصۡرًا
any help
وَلَآ
and not
أَنفُسَهُمۡ
themselves
يَنصُرُونَ
can they help
١٩٢
And they [i.e., the false deities] are unable to [give] them help, nor can they help themselves.
7:193
وَإِن
And if
تَدۡعُوهُمۡ
you call them
إِلَى
to
ٱلۡهُدَىٰ
the guidance
لَا
not
يَتَّبِعُوكُمۡ‌ۚ
will they follow you
سَوَآءٌ
(It is) same
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
for you
أَدَعَوۡتُمُوهُمۡ
whether you call them
أَمۡ
or
أَنتُمۡ
you
صَـٰمِتُونَ
remain silent
١٩٣
And if you [believers] invite them to guidance, they will not follow you. It is all the same for you whether you invite them or you are silent.
7:194
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
those whom
تَدۡعُونَ
you call
مِن
from
دُونِ
besides
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
عِبَادٌ
(are) slaves
أَمۡثَالُكُمۡ‌ۖ
like you
فَٱدۡعُوهُمۡ
So invoke them
فَلۡيَسۡتَجِيبُواۡ
and let them respond
لَكُمۡ
to you
إِن
if
كُنتُمۡ
you are
صَـٰدِقِينَ
truthful
١٩٤
Indeed, those you [polytheists] call upon besides Allāh are servants [i.e., creations] like you. So call upon them and let them respond to you, if you should be truthful.
7:195
أَلَهُمۡ
Are for them
أَرۡجُلٌ
feet
يَمۡشُونَ
(to) walk
بِهَآ‌ۖ
with [it]
أَمۡ
or
لَهُمۡ
for them
أَيۡدٍ
hands
يَبۡطِشُونَ
(to) hold
بِهَآ‌ۖ
with [it]
أَمۡ
or
لَهُمۡ
for them
أَعۡيُنٌ
eyes
يُبۡصِرُونَ
(to) see
بِهَآ‌ۖ
with [it]
أَمۡ
or
لَهُمۡ
for them
ءَاذَانٌ
ears
يَسۡمَعُونَ
(to) hear
بِهَا‌ۗ
with [it]
قُلِ
Say
ٱدۡعُواۡ
Call
شُرَكَآءَكُمۡ
your partners
ثُمَّ
then
كِيدُونِ
scheme against me
فَلَا
and (do) not
تُنظِرُونِ
give me respite
١٩٥
Do they have feet by which they walk? Or do they have hands by which they strike? Or do they have eyes by which they see? Or do they have ears by which they hear? Say, [O Muḥammad], "Call your 'partners' and then conspire against me and give me no respite.
7:196
إِنَّ
Indeed
وَلِــِّۧىَ
my protector
ٱللَّهُ
(is) Allah
ٱلَّذِى
the One Who
نَزَّلَ
revealed
ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ‌ۖ
the Book
وَهُوَ
And He
يَتَوَلَّى
protects
ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
the righteous
١٩٦
Indeed, my protector is Allāh, who has sent down the Book; and He is an ally to the righteous.
7:197
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those whom
تَدۡعُونَ
you invoke
مِن
from
دُونِهِۦ
besides Him
لَا
not
يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ
they are able
نَصۡرَكُمۡ
(to) help you
وَلَآ
and not
أَنفُسَهُمۡ
themselves
يَنصُرُونَ
can they help
١٩٧
And those you call upon besides Him are unable to help you, nor can they help themselves."
7:198
وَإِن
And if
تَدۡعُوهُمۡ
you call them
إِلَى
to
ٱلۡهُدَىٰ
the guidance
لَا
not
يَسۡمَعُواۡ‌ۖ
do they not
وَتَرَٮٰهُمۡ
And you see them
يَنظُرُونَ
looking
إِلَيۡكَ
at you
وَهُمۡ
but they
لَا
not
يُبۡصِرُونَ
(do) they see
١٩٨
And if you invite them to guidance, they do not hear; and you see them looking at you while they do not see.
7:199
خُذِ
Hold
ٱلۡعَفۡوَ
(to) forgiveness
وَأۡمُرۡ
and enjoin
بِٱلۡعُرۡفِ
the good
وَأَعۡرِضۡ
and turn away
عَنِ
from
ٱلۡجَـٰهِلِينَ
the ignorant
١٩٩
Take what is given freely,1 enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.
7:200
وَإِمَّا
And if
يَنزَغَنَّكَ
an evil suggestion comes to you
مِنَ
from
ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنِ
[the] Shaitaan
نَزۡغٌ
[an evil suggestion]
فَٱسۡتَعِذۡ
then seek refuge
بِٱللَّهِ‌ۚ
in Allah
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, He
سَمِيعٌ
(is) All-Hearing
عَلِيمٌ
All-Knowing
٢٠٠
And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allāh. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing.
7:201
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ٱتَّقَوۡاۡ
fear (Allah)
إِذَا
when
مَسَّهُمۡ
touches them
طَـٰٓئِفٌ
an evil thought
مِّنَ
from
ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنِ
the Shaitaan
تَذَكَّرُواۡ
they remember (Allah)
فَإِذَا
and then
هُم
they
مُّبۡصِرُونَ
(are) those who see (aright)
٢٠١
Indeed, those who fear Allāh - when an impulse touches them from Satan, they remember [Him] and at once they have insight.
7:202
وَإِخۡوٰنُهُمۡ
But their brothers
يَمُدُّونَهُمۡ
they plunge them
فِى
in
ٱلۡغَىِّ
the error
ثُمَّ
then
لَا
not
يُقۡصِرُونَ
they cease
٢٠٢
But their brothers1 - they [i.e., the devils] increase them in error; then they do not stop short.
7:203
وَإِذَا
And when
لَمۡ
not
تَأۡتِهِم
you bring them
بِـَٔـايَةٍ
a Sign
قَالُواۡ
they say
لَوۡلَا
Why (have) not
ٱجۡتَبَيۡتَهَا‌ۚ
you devised it
قُلۡ
Say
إِنَّمَآ
Only
أَتَّبِعُ
I follow
مَا
what
يُوحَىٰٓ
is revealed
إِلَىَّ
to me
مِن
from
رَّبِّى‌ۚ
my Lord
هَـٰذَا
This (is)
بَصَآئِرُ
enlightenment
مِن
from
رَّبِّكُمۡ
your Lord
وَهُدًى
and guidance
وَرَحۡمَةٌ
and mercy
لِّقَوۡمٍ
for a people
يُؤۡمِنُونَ
who believe
٢٠٣
And when you, [O Muḥammad], do not bring them a sign [i.e., miracle], they say, "Why have you not contrived it?" Say, "I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This [Qur’ān] is enlightenment from your Lord and guidance and mercy for a people who believe."
7:204
وَإِذَا
And when
قُرِئَ
is recited
ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ
the Quran
فَٱسۡتَمِعُواۡ
then listen
لَهُۥ
to it
وَأَنصِتُواۡ
and pay attention
لَعَلَّكُمۡ
so that you may
تُرۡحَمُونَ
receive mercy
٢٠٤
So when the Qur’ān is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.
7:205
وَٱذۡكُر
And remember
رَّبَّكَ
your Lord
فِى
in
نَفۡسِكَ
yourself
تَضَرُّعًا
humbly
وَخِيفَةً
and (in) fear
وَدُونَ
and without
ٱلۡجَهۡرِ
the loudness
مِنَ
of
ٱلۡقَوۡلِ
[the] words
بِٱلۡغُدُوِّ
in the mornings
وَٱلۡأَصَالِ
and (in) the evenings
وَلَا
And (do) not
تَكُن
be
مِّنَ
among
ٱلۡغَـٰفِلِينَ
the heedless
٢٠٥
And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.
7:206
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
عِندَ
(are) near
رَبِّكَ
your Lord
لَا
not
يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ
(do) they turn away in pride
عَنۡ
from
عِبَادَتِهِۦ
His worship
وَيُسَبِّحُونَهُۥ
And they glorify Him
وَلَهُۥ
and to Him
يَسۡجُدُونَ
they prostrate
۩
Indeed, those who are near your Lord [i.e., the angels] are not prevented by arrogance from His worship, and they exalt Him, and to Him they prostrate.
8:1
يَسۡــَٔلُونَكَ
They ask you
عَنِ
about
ٱلۡأَنفَالِ‌ۖ
the spoils of war
قُلِ
Say
ٱلۡأَنفَالُ
The spoils of war
لِلَّهِ
(are) for Allah
وَٱلرَّسُولِ‌ۖ
and the Messenger
فَٱتَّقُواۡ
So fear
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
وَأَصۡلِحُواۡ
and set right
ذَاتَ
that
بَيۡنِكُمۡ‌ۖ
(which is) between you
وَأَطِيعُواۡ
and obey
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ
and His Messenger
إِن
if
كُنتُم
you are
مُّؤۡمِنِينَ
believers
١
They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the bounties [of war]. Say, "The [decision concerning] bounties is for Allāh and the Messenger." So fear Allāh and amend that which is between you and obey Allāh and His Messenger, if you should be believers.
8:2
إِنَّمَا
Only
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ
the believers
ٱلَّذِينَ
(are) those who
إِذَا
when
ذُكِرَ
is mentioned
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
وَجِلَتۡ
feel fear
قُلُوبُهُمۡ
their hearts
وَإِذَا
and when
تُلِيَتۡ
are recited
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
to them
ءَايَـٰتُهُۥ
His Verses
زَادَتۡهُمۡ
they increase them
إِيمَـٰنًا
(in) faith
وَعَلَىٰ
and upon
رَبِّهِمۡ
their Lord
يَتَوَكَّلُونَ
they put their trust
٢
The believers are only those who, when Allāh is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely -
8:3
ٱلَّذِينَ
Those who
يُقِيمُونَ
establish
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ
the prayer
وَمِمَّا
and out of what
رَزَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ
We have provided them
يُنفِقُونَ
they spend
٣
The ones who establish prayer, and from what We have provided them, they spend.
8:4
أُوۡلَـٰٓئِكَ
Those
هُمُ
they are
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ
the believers
حَقًّا‌ۚ
(in) truth
لَّهُمۡ
For them
دَرَجَـٰتٌ
(are) ranks
عِندَ
with
رَبِّهِمۡ
their Lord
وَمَغۡفِرَةٌ
and forgiveness
وَرِزۡقٌ
and a provision
كَرِيمٌ
noble
٤
Those are the believers, truly. For them are degrees [of high position] with their Lord and forgiveness and noble provision.
8:5
كَمَآ
As
أَخۡرَجَكَ
brought you out
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
مِنۢ
from
بَيۡتِكَ
your home
بِٱلۡحَقِّ
in truth
وَإِنَّ
while indeed
فَرِيقًا
a party
مِّنَ
among
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
the believers
لَكَـٰرِهُونَ
certainly disliked
٥
[It1 is] just as when your Lord brought you out of your home [for the battle of Badr] in truth, while indeed, a party among the believers were unwilling,
8:6
يُجَـٰدِلُونَكَ
They dispute with you
فِى
concerning
ٱلۡحَقِّ
the truth
بَعۡدَ
after what
مَا
was made clear
تَبَيَّنَ
as if
كَأَنَّمَا
they were driven
يُسَاقُونَ
to
إِلَى
[the] death
ٱلۡمَوۡتِ
while they
وَهُمۡ
(were) looking
يَنظُرُونَ
Arguing with you concerning the truth after it had become clear, as if they were being driven toward death while they were looking on.
8:7
وَإِذۡ
And when
يَعِدُكُمُ
promised you
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
إِحۡدَى
one
ٱلطَّآئِفَتَيۡنِ
(of) the two groups
أَنَّهَا
that it (would be)
لَكُمۡ
for you
وَتَوَدُّونَ
and you wished
أَنَّ
that
غَيۡرَ
(one) other than
ذَاتِ
that
ٱلشَّوۡكَةِ
(of) the armed
تَكُونُ
would be
لَكُمۡ
for you
وَيُرِيدُ
But intended
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
أَن
to
يُحِقَّ
justify
ٱلۡحَقَّ
the truth
بِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ
by His words
وَيَقۡطَعَ
and cut off
دَابِرَ
(the) roots
ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِينَ
(of) the disbelievers
٧
[Remember, O believers], when Allāh promised you one of the two groups1 - that it would be yours - and you wished that the unarmed one would be yours. But Allāh intended to establish the truth by His words and to eliminate the disbelievers
8:8
لِيُحِقَّ
That He might justify
ٱلۡحَقَّ
the truth
وَيُبۡطِلَ
and prove false
ٱلۡبَـٰطِلَ
the falsehood
وَلَوۡ
even if
كَرِهَ
disliked (it)
ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ
the criminals
٨
That He should establish the truth and abolish falsehood, even if the criminals disliked it.
8:9
إِذۡ
When
تَسۡتَغِيثُونَ
you were seeking help
رَبَّكُمۡ
(of) your Lord
فَٱسۡتَجَابَ
and He answered
لَكُمۡ
[to] you
أَنِّى
Indeed, I am
مُمِدُّكُم
going to reinforce you
بِأَلۡفٍ
with a thousand
مِّنَ
of
ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ
the Angels
مُرۡدِفِينَ
one after another
٩
[Remember] when you were asking help of your Lord, and He answered you, "Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another."
8:10
وَمَا
And not
جَعَلَهُ
(it was) made
ٱللَّهُ
(by) Allah
إِلَّا
but
بُشۡرَىٰ
good tidings
وَلِتَطۡمَئِنَّ
and so that might be at rest
بِهِۦ
with it
قُلُوبُكُمۡ‌ۚ
your hearts
وَمَا
And (there is) no
ٱلنَّصۡرُ
[the] victory
إِلَّا
except
مِنۡ
from
عِندِ
[of]
ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ
Allah
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
عَزِيزٌ
(is) All-Mighty
حَكِيمٌ
All-Wise
١٠
And Allāh made it not but good tidings and so that your hearts would be assured thereby. And victory is not but from Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.
8:11
إِذۡ
When
يُغَشِّيكُمُ
He covered you
ٱلنُّعَاسَ
with [the] slumber
أَمَنَةً
a security
مِّنۡهُ
from Him
وَيُنَزِّلُ
and sent down
عَلَيۡكُم
upon you
مِّنَ
from
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
the sky
مَآءً
water
لِّيُطَهِّرَكُم
so that He may purify you
بِهِۦ
with it
وَيُذۡهِبَ
and take away
عَنكُمۡ
from you
رِجۡزَ
evil (suggestions)
ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنِ
(of) the Shaitaan
وَلِيَرۡبِطَ
And to strengthen
عَلَىٰ
[on]
قُلُوبِكُمۡ
your hearts
وَيُثَبِّتَ
and make firm
بِهِ
with it
ٱلۡأَقۡدَامَ
your feet
١١
[Remember] when He overwhelmed you with drowsiness [giving] security from Him and sent down upon you from the sky, rain by which to purify you and remove from you the evil [suggestions] of Satan and to make steadfast your hearts and plant firmly thereby your feet.
8:12
إِذۡ
When
يُوحِى
inspired
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
إِلَى
to
ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ
the Angels
أَنِّى
I am
مَعَكُمۡ
with you
فَثَبِّتُواۡ
so strengthen
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ءَامَنُواۡ‌ۚ
believed
سَأُلۡقِى
I will cast
فِى
in
قُلُوبِ
(the) hearts
ٱلَّذِينَ
(of) those who
كَفَرُواۡ
disbelieved
ٱلرُّعۡبَ
the terror
فَٱضۡرِبُواۡ
so strike
فَوۡقَ
above
ٱلۡأَعۡنَاقِ
the necks
وَٱضۡرِبُواۡ
and strike
مِنۡهُمۡ
from them
كُلَّ
every
بَنَانٍ
fingertip[s]
١٢
[Remember] when your Lord inspired to the angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike [them] upon the necks and strike from them every fingertip."1
8:13
ذٰلِكَ
That
بِأَنَّهُمۡ
(is) because they
شَآقُّواۡ
opposed
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
وَرَسُولَهُۥ‌ۚ
and His Messenger
وَمَن
And whoever
يُشَاقِقِ
opposes
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
وَرَسُولَهُۥ
and His Messenger
فَإِنَّ
then indeed
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
شَدِيدُ
(is) severe
ٱلۡعِقَابِ
in [the] penalty
١٣
That is because they opposed Allāh and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allāh and His Messenger - indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.
8:14
ذٰلِكُمۡ
That
فَذُوقُوهُ
So taste it
وَأَنَّ
And that
لِلۡكَـٰفِرِينَ
for the disbelievers
عَذَابَ
(is the) punishment
ٱلنَّارِ
(of) the Fire
١٤
"That [is yours], so taste it." And indeed for the disbelievers is the punishment of the Fire.
8:15
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا
O you
ٱلَّذِينَ
who
ءَامَنُوٓاۡ
believe
إِذَا
When
لَقِيتُمُ
you meet
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
كَفَرُواۡ
disbelieve
زَحۡفًا
advancing
فَلَا
then (do) not
تُوَلُّوهُمُ
turn to them
ٱلۡأَدۡبَارَ
the backs
١٥
O you who have believed, when you meet those who disbelieve advancing [in battle], do not turn to them your backs [in flight].
8:16
وَمَن
And whoever
يُوَلِّهِمۡ
turns to them
يَوۡمَئِذٍ
that day
دُبُرَهُۥٓ
his back
إِلَّا
except
مُتَحَرِّفًا
(as) a strategy
لِّقِتَالٍ
of war
أَوۡ
or
مُتَحَيِّزًا
(to) join
إِلَىٰ
to
فِئَةٍ
a group
فَقَدۡ
certainly
بَآءَ
(he has) incurred
بِغَضَبٍ
wrath
مِّنَ
of
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
وَمَأۡوَٮٰهُ
and his abode
جَهَنَّمُ‌ۖ
(is) Hell
وَبِئۡسَ
a wretched
ٱلۡمَصِيرُ
destination
١٦
And whoever turns his back to them on such a day, unless swerving [as a strategy] for war or joining [another] company, has certainly returned with anger [upon him] from Allāh, and his refuge is Hell - and wretched is the destination.
8:17
فَلَمۡ
And not
تَقۡتُلُوهُمۡ
you kill them
وَلَـٰكِنَّ
but
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
قَتَلَهُمۡ‌ۚ
killed them
وَمَا
And not
رَمَيۡتَ
you threw
إِذۡ
when
رَمَيۡتَ
you threw
وَلَـٰكِنَّ
but
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
رَمَىٰ‌ۚ
threw
وَلِيُبۡلِىَ
and that He may test
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
the believers
مِنۡهُ
from Him
بَلَآءً
(with) a trial
حَسَنًا‌ۚ
good
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
سَمِيعٌ
(is) All-Hearing
عَلِيمٌ
All-Knowing
١٧
And you did not kill them, but it was Allāh who killed them.1 And you threw not, [O Muḥammad], when you threw, but it was Allāh who threw2 that He might test the believers with a good test.3 Indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
8:18
ذٰلِكُمۡ
That (is the case)
وَأَنَّ
and that
ٱللَّهَ
Allah (is)
مُوهِنُ
one who makes weak
كَيۡدِ
(the) plan
ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِينَ
(of) the disbelievers
١٨
That [is so], and [also] that Allāh will weaken the plot of the disbelievers.
8:19
إِن
If
تَسۡتَفۡتِحُواۡ
you ask for victory
فَقَدۡ
then certainly
جَآءَكُمُ
has come to you
ٱلۡفَتۡحُ‌ۖ
the victory
وَإِن
And if
تَنتَهُواۡ
you desist
فَهُوَ
then it (is)
خَيۡرٌ
good
لَّكُمۡ‌ۖ
for you
وَإِن
but if
تَعُودُواۡ
you return
نَعُدۡ
We will return (too)
وَلَن
And never
تُغۡنِىَ
will avail
عَنكُمۡ
you
فِئَتُكُمۡ
your forces
شَيۡــًٔا
anything
وَلَوۡ
even if
كَثُرَتۡ
(they are) numerous
وَأَنَّ
And that
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
مَعَ
(is) with
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
the believers
١٩
If you [disbelievers] seek the decision [i.e., victory] - the decision [i.e., defeat] has come to you. And if you desist [from hostilities], it is best for you; but if you return [to war], We will return, and never will you be availed by your [large] company at all, even if it should increase; and [that is] because Allāh is with the believers.
8:20
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا
O you
ٱلَّذِينَ
who
ءَامَنُوٓاۡ
believe
أَطِيعُواۡ
Obey
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
وَرَسُولَهُۥ
and His Messenger
وَلَا
And (do) not
تَوَلَّوۡاۡ
turn away
عَنۡهُ
from him
وَأَنتُمۡ
while you
تَسۡمَعُونَ
hear
٢٠
O you who have believed, obey Allāh and His Messenger and do not turn from him while you hear [his order].
8:21
وَلَا
And (do) not
تَكُونُواۡ
be
كَٱلَّذِينَ
like those who
قَالُواۡ
say
سَمِعۡنَا
We heard
وَهُمۡ
while they
لَا
(do) not
يَسۡمَعُونَ
hear
٢١
And do not be like those who say, "We have heard," while they do not hear.
8:22
۞إِنَّ
Indeed
شَرَّ
worst
ٱلدَّوَآبِّ
(of) the living creatures
عِندَ
near
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
ٱلصُّمُّ
(are) the deaf
ٱلۡبُكۡمُ
the dumb
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
لَا
(do) not
يَعۡقِلُونَ
use (their) intellect
٢٢
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allāh are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason [i.e., the disbelievers].
8:23
وَلَوۡ
And if
عَلِمَ
(had) known
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
فِيهِمۡ
in them
خَيۡرًا
any good
لَّأَسۡمَعَهُمۡ‌ۖ
surely, He (would) have made them hear
وَلَوۡ
And if
أَسۡمَعَهُمۡ
He had made them hear
لَتَوَلَّواۡ
surely they would have turned away
وَّهُم
while they
مُّعۡرِضُونَ
(were) averse
٢٣
Had Allāh known any good in them, He would have made them hear. And if He had made them hear, they would [still] have turned away, while they were refusing.
8:24
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا
O you
ٱلَّذِينَ
who
ءَامَنُواۡ
believe
ٱسۡتَجِيبُواۡ
Respond
لِلَّهِ
to Allah
وَلِلرَّسُولِ
and His Messenger
إِذَا
when
دَعَاكُمۡ
he calls you
لِمَا
to what
يُحۡيِيكُمۡ‌ۖ
gives you life
وَٱعۡلَمُوٓاۡ
And know
أَنَّ
that
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
يَحُولُ
comes
بَيۡنَ
(in) between
ٱلۡمَرۡءِ
a man
وَقَلۡبِهِۦ
and his heart
وَأَنَّهُۥٓ
and that
إِلَيۡهِ
to Him
تُحۡشَرُونَ
you will be gathered
٢٤
O you who have believed, respond to Allāh and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allāh intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.
8:25
وَٱتَّقُواۡ
And fear
فِتۡنَةً
a trial
لَّا
not
تُصِيبَنَّ
which will afflict
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ظَلَمُواۡ
do wrong
مِنكُمۡ
among you
خَآصَّةً‌ۖ
exclusively
وَٱعۡلَمُوٓاۡ
And know
أَنَّ
that
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
شَدِيدُ
(is) severe
ٱلۡعِقَابِ
(in) the penalty
٢٥
And fear a trial1 which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allāh is severe in penalty.
8:26
وَٱذۡكُرُوٓاۡ
And remember
إِذۡ
when
أَنتُمۡ
you
قَلِيلٌ
(were) few
مُّسۡتَضۡعَفُونَ
(and) deemed weak
فِى
in
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
the earth
تَخَافُونَ
fearing
أَن
that
يَتَخَطَّفَكُمُ
might do away with you
ٱلنَّاسُ
the men
فَـَٔـاوَٮٰكُمۡ
then He sheltered you
وَأَيَّدَكُم
and strengthened you
بِنَصۡرِهِۦ
with His help
وَرَزَقَكُم
and provided you
مِّنَ
of
ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ
the good things
لَعَلَّكُمۡ
so that you may
تَشۡكُرُونَ
(be) thankful
٢٦
And remember when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that people might abduct you, but He sheltered you, supported you with His victory, and provided you with good things - that you might be grateful.
8:27
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا
O you
ٱلَّذِينَ
who
ءَامَنُواۡ
believe
لَا
(Do) not
تَخُونُواۡ
betray
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
وَٱلرَّسُولَ
and the Messenger
وَتَخُونُوٓاۡ
or betray
أَمَـٰنَـٰتِكُمۡ
your trusts
وَأَنتُمۡ
while you
تَعۡلَمُونَ
know
٢٧
O you who have believed, do not betray Allāh and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].
8:28
وَٱعۡلَمُوٓاۡ
And know
أَنَّمَآ
that
أَمۡوٰلُكُمۡ
your wealth
وَأَوۡلَـٰدُكُمۡ
and your children
فِتۡنَةٌ
(are) a trial
وَأَنَّ
And that
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
عِندَهُۥٓ
with Him
أَجۡرٌ
(is) a reward
عَظِيمٌ
great
٢٨
And know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allāh has with Him a great reward.
8:29
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا
O you
ٱلَّذِينَ
who
ءَامَنُوٓاۡ
believe
إِن
If
تَتَّقُواۡ
you fear
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
يَجۡعَل
He will grant
لَّكُمۡ
you
فُرۡقَانًا
a criterion
وَيُكَفِّرۡ
and will remove
عَنكُمۡ
from you
سَيِّـَٔـاتِكُمۡ
your evil deeds
وَيَغۡفِرۡ
and forgive
لَكُمۡ‌ۗ
you
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
ذُو
(is) the Possessor
ٱلۡفَضۡلِ
(of) Bounty
ٱلۡعَظِيمِ
the Great
٢٩
O you who have believed, if you fear Allāh, He will grant you a criterion1 and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.
8:30
وَإِذۡ
And when
يَمۡكُرُ
plotted
بِكَ
against you
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
كَفَرُواۡ
disbelieved
لِيُثۡبِتُوكَ
that they restrain you
أَوۡ
or
يَقۡتُلُوكَ
kill you
أَوۡ
or
يُخۡرِجُوكَ‌ۚ
drive you out
وَيَمۡكُرُونَ
And they were planning
وَيَمۡكُرُ
and (also) was planning
ٱللَّهُ‌ۖ
Allah
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
خَيۡرُ
is (the) Best
ٱلۡمَـٰكِرِينَ
(of) the Planners
٣٠
And [remember, O Muḥammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allāh plans. And Allāh is the best of planners.
8:31
وَإِذَا
And when
تُتۡلَىٰ
are recited
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
to them
ءَايَـٰتُنَا
Our Verses
قَالُواۡ
they say
قَدۡ
Verily
سَمِعۡنَا
we have heard
لَوۡ
if
نَشَآءُ
we wish
لَقُلۡنَا
surely, we could say
مِثۡلَ
like
هَـٰذَآ‌ۙ
this
إِنۡ
Not
هَـٰذَآ
is this
إِلَّآ
but
أَسَـٰطِيرُ
tales
ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ
(of) the former (people)
٣١
And when Our verses are recited to them, they say, "We have heard. If we willed, we could say [something] like this. This is not but legends of the former peoples."
8:32
وَإِذۡ
And when
قَالُواۡ
they said
ٱللَّهُمَّ
O Allah
إِن
If
كَانَ
was
هَـٰذَا
this
هُوَ
[it]
ٱلۡحَقَّ
the truth
مِنۡ
[of]
عِندِكَ
from You
فَأَمۡطِرۡ
then (send) rain
عَلَيۡنَا
upon us
حِجَارَةً
(of) stones
مِّنَ
from
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
the sky
أَوِ
or
ٱئۡتِنَا
bring (upon) us
بِعَذَابٍ
a punishment
أَلِيمٍ
painful
٣٢
And [remember] when they said, "O Allāh, if this should be the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky or bring us a painful punishment."
8:33
وَمَا
But not
كَانَ
is
ٱللَّهُ
(for) Allah
لِيُعَذِّبَهُمۡ
that He punishes them
وَأَنتَ
while you
فِيهِمۡ‌ۚ
(are) among them
وَمَا
and not
كَانَ
is
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
مُعَذِّبَهُمۡ
the One Who punishes them
وَهُمۡ
while they
يَسۡتَغۡفِرُونَ
seek forgiveness
٣٣
But Allāh would not punish them while you, [O Muḥammad], are among them, and Allāh would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.
8:34
وَمَا
But what
لَهُمۡ
(is) for them
أَلَّا
that not
يُعَذِّبَهُمُ
(should) punish them
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
وَهُمۡ
while they
يَصُدُّونَ
hinder (people)
عَنِ
from
ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ
Al-Masjid
ٱلۡحَرَامِ
Al-Haraam
وَمَا
while not
كَانُوٓاۡ
they are
أَوۡلِيَآءَهُۥٓ‌ۚ
its guardians
إِنۡ
Not (can be)
أَوۡلِيَآؤُهُۥٓ
its guardians
إِلَّا
except
ٱلۡمُتَّقُونَ
the ones who fear Allah
وَلَـٰكِنَّ
but
أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ
most of them
لَا
(do) not
يَعۡلَمُونَ
know
٣٤
But why should Allāh not punish them while they obstruct [people] from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām and they were not [fit to be] its guardians? Its [true] guardians are not but the righteous, but most of them do not know.
8:35
وَمَا
And not
كَانَ
was
صَلَاتُهُمۡ
their prayer
عِندَ
at
ٱلۡبَيۡتِ
the House
إِلَّا
except
مُكَآءً
whistling
وَتَصۡدِيَةً‌ۚ
and clapping
فَذُوقُواۡ
So taste
ٱلۡعَذَابَ
the punishment
بِمَا
because
كُنتُمۡ
you used to
تَكۡفُرُونَ
disbelieve
٣٥
And their prayer at the House [i.e., the Kaʿbah] was not except whistling and handclapping. So taste the punishment for what you disbelieved [i.e., practiced of deviations].
8:36
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
كَفَرُواۡ
disbelieve
يُنفِقُونَ
they spend
أَمۡوٰلَهُمۡ
their wealth
لِيَصُدُّواۡ
to hinder (people)
عَن
from
سَبِيلِ
(the) way
ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ
(of) Allah
فَسَيُنفِقُونَهَا
So they will spend it
ثُمَّ
then
تَكُونُ
it will be
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
for them
حَسۡرَةً
a regret
ثُمَّ
then
يُغۡلَبُونَ‌ۗ
they will be overcome
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those who
كَفَرُوٓاۡ
disbelieve
إِلَىٰ
to
جَهَنَّمَ
Hell
يُحۡشَرُونَ
they will be gathered
٣٦
Indeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to avert [people] from the way of Allāh. So they will spend it; then it will be for them a [source of] regret; then they will be overcome. And those who have disbelieved - unto Hell they will be gathered.
8:37
لِيَمِيزَ
That may distinguish
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
ٱلۡخَبِيثَ
the wicked
مِنَ
from
ٱلطَّيِّبِ
the good
وَيَجۡعَلَ
and place
ٱلۡخَبِيثَ
the wicked
بَعۡضَهُۥ
some of them
عَلَىٰ
on
بَعۡضٍ
others
فَيَرۡكُمَهُۥ
and heap them
جَمِيعًا
all together
فَيَجۡعَلَهُۥ
and put them
فِى
in
جَهَنَّمَ‌ۚ
Hell
أُوۡلَـٰٓئِكَ
Those
هُمُ
they
ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ
(are) the losers
٣٧
[It is] so that Allāh may distinguish the wicked from the good and place the wicked some of them upon others and heap them all together and put them into Hell. It is those who are the losers.
8:38
قُل
Say
لِّلَّذِينَ
to those who
كَفَرُوٓاۡ
disbelieve
إِن
if
يَنتَهُواۡ
they cease
يُغۡفَرۡ
will be forgiven
لَهُم
for them
مَّا
what
قَدۡ
[verily]
سَلَفَ
(is) past
وَإِن
But if
يَعُودُواۡ
they return
فَقَدۡ
then verily
مَضَتۡ
preceded
سُنَّتُ
(the) practice
ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ
(of) the former (people)
٣٨
Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them. But if they return [to hostility] - then the precedent of the former [rebellious] peoples has already taken place.1
8:39
وَقَـٰتِلُوهُمۡ
And fight them
حَتَّىٰ
until
لَا
not
تَكُونَ
there is
فِتۡنَةٌ
oppression
وَيَكُونَ
and is
ٱلدِّينُ
the religion
كُلُّهُۥ
all of it
لِلَّهِ‌ۚ
for Allah
فَإِنِ
But if
ٱنتَهَوۡاۡ
they cease
فَإِنَّ
then indeed
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
بِمَا
of what
يَعۡمَلُونَ
they do
بَصِيرٌ
(is) All-Seer
٣٩
And fight against them until there is no fitnah1 and [until] the religion [i.e., worship], all of it, is for Allāh.2 And if they cease - then indeed, Allāh is Seeing of what they do.
8:40
وَإِن
And if
تَوَلَّوۡاۡ
they turn away
فَٱعۡلَمُوٓاۡ
then know
أَنَّ
that
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
مَوۡلَـٰكُمۡ‌ۚ
(is) your Protector
نِعۡمَ
Excellent
ٱلۡمَوۡلَىٰ
(is) the Protector
وَنِعۡمَ
and Excellent
ٱلنَّصِيرُ
(is) the Helper
٤٠
But if they turn away - then know that Allāh is your protector. Excellent is the protector, and excellent is the helper.
