Back to Ruku Indexٱ لۡمُخَلَّفُونَٱ للَّهِي ُجَـٰ هِدُواۡ ٱ للَّهِٱ لۡحَرِّۗل َّوۡو َلۡيَبۡ كُواۡ ج َزَا ٓءَۢ ب ِمَار َّجَعَكَٱ للَّهُم ِّنۡهُمۡت َخۡرُجُواۡ و َلَن ت ُقَـٰ تِلُواۡ ب ِٱ لۡقُعُودِف َٱ قۡ عُدُواۡ ٱ لۡخَـٰ لِفِي نَ٨٣م ِّنۡهُم م َّاتَو َلَاٱ للَّهُي ُعَذِّبَهُم ب ِهَاٱ ل دُّنۡيَاٱ سۡتَــٔۡذَنَكَٱ ل طَّوۡلِم َّعَٱ لۡقَـٰ عِدِي نَ٨٦ي َكُونُواۡ ٱ لۡخَوَالِفِٱ ل رَّسُولُٱ لۡخَيۡرٰ ٱ لۡمُفۡلِحُو نَ٨٨ٱ للَّهُت َجۡ رِىت َحۡتِهَاٱ لۡأَنۡهَـٰ رُٱ لۡفَوۡزُٱ لۡعَظِي مُ٨٩

9:81
فَرِحَ
Rejoice
those who remained behind
بِمَقۡ عَدِهِمۡ
in their staying
خِلَـٰ فَ
behind
رَسُولِ
(the) Messenger
(of) Allah
وَكَرِهُوٓ اۡ
and they disliked
أَن
to
strive
بِأَمۡوٰ
with their wealth
وَأَنف ُسِهِمۡ
and their lives
فِى
in
سَبِيلِ
(the) way
(of) Allah
وَقَالُواۡ
and they said
لَا
(Do) not
تَنف ِرُواۡ
go forth
فِى
in
the heat
قُلۡ
Say
نَارُ
(The) Fire
جَهَنّ َمَ
(of) Hell
أَشَدُّ
(is) more intense
حَرًّاۚ
(in) heat
If (only)
كَانُواۡ
they could
يَفۡقَهُو نَ
٨١understand
Those who remained behind1 rejoiced in their staying [at home] after [the departure of] the Messenger of Allāh and disliked to strive with their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allāh and said, "Do not go forth in the heat." Say, "The fire of Hell is more intense in heat" - if they would but understand.
9:82
فَلۡيَضۡحَكُواۡ
So let them laugh
قَلِيلاً
a little
and let them weep
كَثِيرًا
much
(as) a recompense
for what
كَانُواۡ
they used to
يَكۡسِبُو نَ
٨٢earn
So let them laugh a little and [then] weep much as recompense for what they used to earn.
9:83
فَإِن
Then if
Allah returns you
Allah returns you
إِلَىٰ
to
طَا ٓئِفَةٍ
a group
of them
فَٱ سۡتَــٔۡذَنُوكَ
and they ask you permission
لِلۡخُرُوجِ
to go out
فَقُل
then say
لَّن
Never
will you come out
مَعِىَ
with me
أَبَدًا
ever
and never
will you fight
مَعِىَ
with me
عَدُوًّاۖ
any enemy
إِنّ َكُمۡ
Indeed, you
رَضِيتُم
were satisfied
with sitting
أَوَّلَ
(the) first
مَرَّةٍ
time
so sit
مَعَ
with
those who stay behind
If Allāh should return you to a faction of them [after the expedition] and then they ask your permission to go out [to battle], say, "You will not go out with me, ever, and you will never fight with me an enemy. Indeed, you were satisfied with sitting [at home] the first time, so sit [now] with those who stay behind."
9:84
وَلَا
And not
تُصَلِّ
you pray
عَلَىٰٓ
for
أَحَدٍ
any
of them
who dies
أَبَدًا
ever
and not
تَقُمۡ
you stand
عَلَىٰ
by
قَبۡ رِهِۦٓۖ
his grave
إِنّ َهُمۡ
Indeed, they
كَفَرُواۡ
disbelieved
بِٱ للَّهِ
in Allah
وَرَسُولِهِۦ
and His Messenger
وَمَاتُواۡ
and died
وَهُمۡ
while they were
فَـٰ سِقُو نَ
٨٤defiantly disobedient
And do not pray [the funeral prayer, O Muḥammad], over any of them who has died - ever - or stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allāh and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient.
9:85
وَلَا
And (let) not
تُعۡجِبۡ كَ
impress you
أَمۡوٰ
their wealth
وَأَوۡلَـٰ دُهُمۡۚ
and their children
إِنّ َمَا
Only
يُرِيدُ
Allah intends
Allah intends
أَن
to
punish them
with it
فِى
in
the world
وَتَزۡهَقَ
and will depart
أَنف ُسُهُمۡ
their souls
وَهُمۡ
while they
كَـٰ فِرُو نَ
٨٥(are) disbelievers
And let not their wealth and their children impress you. Allāh only intends to punish them through them in this world and that their souls should depart [at death] while they are disbelievers.
9:86
وَإِذَآ
And when
أُنز ِلَتۡ
was revealed
سُورَةٌ
a Surah
أَنۡ
that
ءَامِنُواۡ
believe
بِٱ للَّهِ
in Allah
وَجَـٰ هِدُواۡ
and strive
مَعَ
with
رَسُولِهِ
His Messenger
ask your permission
أُوۡ لُواۡ
(the) men
(of) wealth
مِنۡهُمۡ
among them
وَقَالُواۡ
and said
ذَرۡنَا
Leave us
نَكُن
(to) be
with
those who sit
And when a sūrah was revealed [enjoining them] to believe in Allāh and to fight with His Messenger, those of wealth among them asked your permission [to stay back] and said, "Leave us to be with them who sit [at home]."
9:87
رَضُواۡ
They (were) satisfied
بِأَن
to
be
مَعَ
with
those who stay behind
وَطُبِعَ
and were sealed
عَلَىٰ
[on]
قُلُوبِهِمۡ
their hearts
فَهُمۡ
so they
لَا
(do) not
يَفۡقَهُو نَ
٨٧understand
They were satisfied to be with those who stay behind, and their hearts were sealed over, so they do not understand.
9:88
لَـٰ كِنِ
But
the Messenger
وَٱ لَّذِينَ
and those who
ءَامَنُواۡ
believed
مَعَهُۥ
with him
جَـٰ هَدُواۡ
strove
بِأَمۡوٰ
with their wealth
وَأَنف ُسِهِمۡۚ
and their lives
وَأُوۡ لَـٰٓ ئِكَ
And those
لَهُمُ
for them
(are) the good things
وَأُوۡ لَـٰٓ ئِكَ
and those
هُمُ
they
(are) the successful ones
But the Messenger and those who believed with him fought with their wealth and their lives. Those will have [all that is] good and it is those who are the successful.
9:89
أَعَدَّ
Allah has prepared
Allah has prepared
لَهُمۡ
for them
جَنّ َـٰ تٍ
Gardens
flows
مِن
from
underneath it
the rivers
خَـٰ لِدِينَ
(will) abide forever
فِيهَاۚ
in it
ذٰ
That
(is) the success
the great
Allāh has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. That is the great attainment.
