[Moses] said, "The knowledge thereof is with my Lord in a record. My Lord neither errs nor forgets."
20:53
ٱلَّذِى
The One Who
جَعَلَ
made
لَكُمُ
for you
the earth
مَهۡدًا
(as) a bed
and inserted
لَكُمۡ
for you
فِيهَا
therein

then We (have) brought forth
بِهِۦٓ
with it
أَزۡوٰ جًا
pairs

plants
diverse
[It is He] who has made for you the earth as a bed [spread out] and inserted therein for you roadways and sent down from the sky, rain and produced thereby categories of various plants.
20:54
كُلُواۡ
Eat

(of) intelligence
Eat [therefrom] and pasture your livestock. Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.
20:55
۞مِنۡهَا
From it
خَلَقۡ نَـٰ كُمۡ
We created you
وَفِيهَا
and in it
نُعِيدُكُمۡ
We will return you
وَمِنۡهَا
and from it
نُخۡرِجُكُمۡ
We will bring you out
تَارَةً
time
أُخۡرَىٰ
٥٥another
From it [i.e., the earth] We created you, and into it We will return you, and from it We will extract you another time.
20:56
وَلَقَدۡ
And verily
أَرَيۡنَـٰ هُ
We showed him
ءَايَـٰ تِنَا
Our Signs
كُلَّهَا
all of them
فَكَذَّبَ
but he denied
وَأَبَىٰ
٥٦and refused
And We certainly showed him [i.e., Pharaoh] Our signs - all of them - but he denied and refused.
20:57
قَالَ
He said
أَجِئۡتَنَا
Have you come to us
لِتُخۡرِجَنَا
to drive us out
مِنۡ
of
أَرۡضِنَا
our land
بِسِحۡرِكَ
with your magic
يَـٰ مُوسَىٰ
٥٧O Musa
He said, "Have you come to us to drive us out of our land with your magic, O Moses?
20:58
فَلَنَأۡتِيَنّ َكَ
Then we will surely produce for you
بِسِحۡرٍ
magic
like it
فَٱ جۡ عَلۡ
So make

نَحۡنُ
[we]
وَلَآ

أَنت َ
you
مَكَانًا
(in) a place
even
Then we will surely bring you magic like it, so make between us and you an appointment, which we will not fail to keep and neither will you, in a place assigned."1
20:59
قَالَ
He said
مَوۡعِدُكُمۡ
Your appointment
يَوۡمُ
(is on the) day
(of) the festival
وَأَن
and that
will be assembled
the people
ضُحًى
٥٩(at) forenoon
[Moses] said, "Your appointment is on the day of the festival when the people assemble at mid-morning."1
20:60
فَتَوَلَّىٰ
Then went away
فِرۡعَوۡنُ
Firaun
فَجَمَعَ
and put together
كَيۡدَهُۥ
his plan
ثُمّ َ
then
أَتَىٰ
٦٠came
So Pharaoh went away, put together his plan, and then came [to Moses].
20:61
قَالَ
Said
لَهُم
to them
Musa
وَيۡلَكُمۡ
Woe to you
لَا
(Do) not
تَفۡتَرُواۡ
invent
عَلَى
against
Allah
كَذِبًا
a lie
lest He will destroy you
with a punishment
And verily
خَابَ
he failed
مَنِ
who
invented
Moses said to them [i.e., the magicians summoned by Pharaoh], "Woe to you! Do not invent a lie against Allāh or He will exterminate you with a punishment; and he has failed who invents [such falsehood]."
20:62
فَتَنَـٰ زَعُوٓ اۡ
Then they disputed
أَمۡرَهُم
(in) their affair
among them
وَأَسَرُّواۡ
and they kept secret
the private conversation
So they disputed over their affair among themselves and concealed their private conversation.
20:63
قَالُوٓ اۡ
They said
إِنۡ
Indeed
هَـٰ ذٰ نِ
these two
لَسَـٰ حِرٰ نِ
[two] magicians
يُرِيدَانِ
they intend
أَن
that
they drive you out
of
أَرۡضِكُم
your land
with their magic
وَيَذۡهَبَا
and do away
بِطَرِيقَتِكُمُ
with your way
the exemplary
They said, "Indeed, these are two magicians who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and do away with your most exemplary way [i.e., religion or tradition].
20:64
فَأَجۡ مِعُواۡ
So put together
كَيۡدَكُمۡ
your plan
ثُمّ َ
then
come
صَفًّاۚ
(in) a line
And verily
أَفۡلَحَ
(will be) successful
today
مَنِ
who
overcomes
So resolve upon your plan and then come [forward] in line. And he has succeeded today who overcomes."
20:65
قَالُواۡ
They said
يَـٰ مُوسَىٰٓ
O Musa
إِمّ َآ
Either
أَن
[that]
you throw
وَإِمّ َآ
or
أَن
[that]
we will be
أَوَّلَ
the first
مَنۡ
who
أَلۡقَىٰ
٦٥throws
They said, "O Moses, either you throw or we will be the first to throw."
20:66
قَالَ
He said
بَلۡ
Nay
أَلۡقُواۡۖ
you throw
فَإِذَا
Then behold
حِبَالُهُمۡ
Their ropes
وَعِصِيُّهُمۡ
and their staffs
يُخَيَّلُ
seemed
إِلَيۡهِ
to him
مِن
by
their magic
أَنّ َهَا
that they
تَسۡعَىٰ
٦٦(were) moving
He said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes].
20:67
فَأَوۡجَسَ
So sensed
فِى
in
نَفۡسِهِۦ
himself
خِيفَةً
a fear
Musa
And he sensed within himself apprehension, did Moses.
20:68
قُلۡنَا
We said
لَا
(Do) not
تَخَفۡ
fear
إِنّ َكَ
Indeed, you
أَنت َ
you
(will be) superior
We [i.e., Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior.
20:69
وَأَلۡقِ
And throw
مَا
what
فِى
(is) in
يَمِينِكَ
your right hand
تَلۡقَفۡ
it will swallow up
مَا
what
صَنَعُوٓاۡ ۖ
they have made
إِنّ َمَا
Only
صَنَعُواۡ
they (have) made
كَيۡدُ
a trick
سَـٰ حِرٍۖ
(of) a magician
and not
يُفۡلِحُ
will be successful
the magician
حَيۡثُ
wherever
أَتَىٰ
٦٩he comes
And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is."
20:70
فَأُلۡقِىَ
So were thrown down
the magicians
سُجَّدًا
prostrating
They said
ءَامَنّ َا
We believe
بِرَبِّ
in (the) Lord
هَـٰ رُونَ
(of) Harun
وَمُوسَىٰ
٧٠and Musa
So the magicians fell down in prostration.1 They said, "We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."
20:71
قَالَ
He said
ءَامَنت ُمۡ
You believe
لَهُۥ
[to] him
قَبۡ لَ
before
أَنۡ
[that]
ءَاذَنَ
I gave permission
لَكُمۡۖ
to you
إِنّ َهُۥ
Indeed, he
لَكَبِيرُكُمُ
(is) your chief
the one who
عَلَّمَكُمُ
taught you
the magic
فَلَأُقَطِّعَنّ َ
So surely I will cut off
أَيۡدِيَكُمۡ
your hands
وَأَرۡجُلَكُم
and your feet
of
خِلَـٰ فٍ
opposite sides
and surely I will crucify you
فِى
on
جُذُوعِ
(the) trunks
(of) date-palms
وَلَتَعۡلَمُنّ َ
and surely you will know
أَيُّنَآ
which of us
أَشَدُّ
(is) more severe
عَذَابًا
(in) punishment
and more lasting
[Pharaoh] said, "You believed him [i.e., Moses] before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you on the trunks of palm trees, and you will surely know which of us is more severe in [giving] punishment and more enduring."
20:72
قَالُواۡ
They said
لَن
Never
we will prefer you
عَلَىٰ
over
مَا
what
جَا ٓءَنَا
has come to us
مِنَ
of
the clear proofs
وَٱ لَّذِى
and the One Who
فَطَرَنَاۖ
created us
فَٱ قۡ ضِ
So decree
مَآ
whatever

you
قَاضٍۖ
(are) decreeing
إِنّ َمَا
Only
تَقۡ ضِى
you can decree
هَـٰ ذِهِ
(for) this
life
(of) the world
They said, "Never will we prefer you over what has come to us of clear proofs and [over] He who created us.1 So decree whatever you are to decree. You can only decree for this worldly life.
20:73
إِنّ َآ
Indeed, [we]
ءَامَنّ َا
we believe
بِرَبِّنَا
in our Lord
لِيَغۡفِرَ
that He may forgive
لَنَا
for us
خَطَـٰ يَـٰ نَا
our sins
وَمَآ
and what
أَكۡرَهۡتَنَا
you compelled us
عَلَيۡهِ
on it
مِنَ
of
the magic
وَٱ للَّهُ
And Allah
خَيۡرٌ
(is) Best
and Ever Lasting
Indeed, we have believed in our Lord that He may forgive us our sins and what you compelled us [to do] of magic. And Allāh is better and more enduring."1
20:74
إِنّ َهُۥ
Indeed, he
مَن
who
comes
رَبَّهُۥ
(to) his Lord
مُجۡ رِمًا
(as) a criminal
then indeed
لَهُۥ
for him
جَهَنّ َمَ
(is) Hell
لَا
Not
يَمُوتُ
he will die
فِيهَا
in it
وَلَا
and not
يَحۡيَىٰ
٧٤live
Indeed, whoever comes to his Lord as a criminal - indeed, for him is Hell; he will neither die therein nor live.
20:75
وَمَن
But whoever
comes to Him
مُؤۡمِنًا
(as) a believer
verily
عَمِلَ
he has done
the righteous deeds
فَأُوۡ لَـٰٓ ئِكَ
then those
لَهُمُ
for them
(will be) the ranks
[the] high
But whoever comes to Him as a believer having done righteous deeds - for those will be the highest degrees [in position]:
20:76
جَنّ َـٰ تُ
Gardens

مِن

underneath them
the rivers
خَـٰ لِدِينَ
abiding forever
فِيهَاۚ
in it
وَذٰ لِكَ
And that
جَزَا ٓءُ
(is) the reward
مَن
(for him) who
purifies himself
Gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. And that is the reward of one who purifies himself.1
20:77
وَلَقَدۡ
And verily
أَوۡحَيۡنَآ
We inspired
إِلَىٰ
to
مُوسَىٰٓ
Musa
أَنۡ
that
أَسۡرِ
Travel by night
بِعِبَادِى
with My slaves
فَٱ ضۡرِبۡ

لَهُمۡ
for them
طَرِيقًا
a path
in
the sea
يَبَسًا
dry
not
تَخَـٰ فُ
fearing
دَرَكًا
to be overtaken
and not
تَخۡشَىٰ
٧٧being afraid
And We had inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants and strike for them a dry path through the sea; you will not fear being overtaken [by Pharaoh] nor be afraid [of drowning]."
20:78
فَأَتۡبَعَهُمۡ
Then followed them
فِرۡعَوۡنُ
Firaun
بِجُنُودِهِۦ
with his forces
فَغَشِيَهُم
but covered them
from
the sea
مَا
what
غَشِيَهُمۡ
٧٨covered them
So Pharaoh pursued them with his soldiers, and there covered them from the sea that which covered them,1
20:79
وَأَضَلَّ
And led astray
فِرۡعَوۡنُ
Firaun
قَوۡمَهُۥ
his people
وَمَا
and (did) not
هَدَىٰ
٧٩guide them
And Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide [them].
20:80
يَـٰ بَنِىٓ
O Children of Israel
إِسۡرٰ ٓءِيلَ
O Children of Israel
قَدۡ
Verily

وَنَزَّلۡنَا
and We sent down
عَلَيۡكُمُ
to you
the Manna
وَٱ ل سَّلۡوَىٰ
٨٠and the quails
O Children of Israel, We delivered you from your enemy, and We made an appointment with you1 at the right side of the mount, and We sent down to you manna and quails,
20:81
كُلُواۡ
Eat
مِن
of
(the) good things
مَا
which
رَزَقۡ نَـٰ كُمۡ
We have provided you
وَلَا

تَطۡ غَوۡاۡ
transgress
فِيهِ
therein
فَيَحِلَّ
lest should descend
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
upon you
غَضَبِىۖ
My Anger
وَمَن
And whoever
on whom descends
عَلَيۡهِ
on whom descends
غَضَبِى
My Anger
فَقَدۡ
indeed
هَوَىٰ
٨١he (has) perished
[Saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you and do not transgress [or oppress others] therein, lest My anger should descend upon you. And he upon whom My anger descends has certainly fallen [i.e., perished]."
20:82
وَإِنّ ِى
But indeed, I Am
لَغَفَّارٌ
the Perpetual Forgiver
of whoever
repents
وَءَامَنَ
and believes
وَعَمِلَ
and does

righteous (deeds)
then
remains guided
But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
20:83
۞وَمَآ
And what
أَعۡجَلَكَ
made you hasten
عَن
from
your people
يَـٰ مُوسَىٰ
٨٣O Musa
[Allāh said], "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?"
20:84
قَالَ
He said
هُمۡ
They
أُوۡ لَا ٓءِ
(are) close
عَلَىٰٓ
upon
أَثَرِى
my tracks
وَعَجِلۡتُ
and I hastened
إِلَيۡكَ
to you
رَبِّ
my Lord
لِتَرۡضَىٰ
٨٤that You be pleased
He said, "They are close upon my tracks, and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You be pleased."
20:85
قَالَ
He said
فَإِنّ َا
But indeed, We
قَدۡ
[verily]
فَتَنّ َا
We (have) tried
قَوۡمَكَ
your people
مِنۢ
after you
after you
وَأَضَلَّهُمُ
and has led them astray
the Samiri
[Allāh] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Sāmirī1 has led them astray."
20:86
فَرَجَعَ
Then Musa returned
مُوسَىٰٓ
Then Musa returned
إِلَىٰ
to
قَوۡمِهِۦ
his people
غَضۡبَـٰ نَ
angry
أَسِفًاۚ
(and) sorrowful
He said
يَـٰ قَوۡمِ
O my people
أَلَمۡ
Did not
يَعِدۡ كُمۡ
promise you
رَبُّكُمۡ
your Lord
وَعۡدًا
a promise
حَسَنًاۚ
good
أَفَطَالَ
Then, did seem long
عَلَيۡكُمُ
to you
the promise
أَمۡ
or
أَرَد تُّمۡ
did you desire
أَن
that
descend
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
upon you
غَضَبٌ
(the) Anger
of
your Lord
فَأَخۡلَفۡتُم
so you broke
(the) promise to me
So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved.1 He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise?2 Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"
20:87
قَالُواۡ
They said
مَآ
Not
أَخۡلَفۡنَا
we broke
مَوۡعِدَكَ
promise to you
بِمَلۡكِنَا
by our will
وَلَـٰ كِنّ َا
but we
حُمّ ِلۡنَآ
[we] were made to carry
أَوۡزَارًا
burdens
from
ornaments
(of) the people
فَقَذَفۡنَـٰ هَا
so we threw them
فَكَذٰ لِكَ
and thus
أَلۡقَى
threw
the Samiri
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Sāmirī throw."
20:88
فَأَخۡرَجَ
Then he brought forth
لَهُمۡ
for them
عِجۡ لاً
a calf's
body
it had
خُوَارٌ
a lowing sound
and they said
هَـٰ ذَآ
This
إِلَـٰ هُكُمۡ
(is) your god
وَإِلَـٰ هُ
and the god
مُوسَىٰ
(of) Musa
فَنَسِىَ
٨٨but he forgot
And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot."
20:89
أَفَلَا
Then, did not
يَرَوۡنَ
they see
أَلَّا

لَهُمۡ
for them
ضَرًّا
any harm
and not
نَفۡعًا
٨٩any benefit
Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech [i.e., response] and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?
20:90
وَلَقَدۡ
And verily
قَالَ
(had) said
لَهُمۡ
to them

٩٠my order
And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order."
20:91
قَالُواۡ
They said

مُوسَىٰ
٩١Musa
They said, "We will never cease being devoted to it [i.e., the calf] until Moses returns to us."
20:92
قَالَ
He said
يَـٰ هَـٰ رُونُ
O Harun
مَا
What

[Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray,
20:93

أَفَعَصَيۡتَ
Then, have you disobeyed
أَمۡرِى
٩٣my order
From following me? Then have you disobeyed my order?"
20:94
قَالَ
He said
يَبۡ نَؤُمّ َ
O son of my mother

٩٤my word
[Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe [or await] my word.'"
20:95
قَالَ
He said
فَمَا
Then what
خَطۡ بُكَ

يَـٰ سَـٰ مِرِىُّ
٩٥O Samiri
[Moses] said, "And what is your case, O Sāmirī?"
20:96
قَالَ
He said

He said, "I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful [of dust] from the track of the messenger1 and threw it,2 and thus did my soul entice me."
20:97
قَالَ
He said
فَٱ ذۡهَبۡ
Then go

[Moses] said, "Then go. And indeed, it is [decreed] for you in [this] life to say, 'No contact.'1 And indeed, you have an appointment [in the Hereafter] you will not fail to keep. And look at your 'god' to which you remained devoted. We will surely burn it and blow it [i.e., its ashes] into the sea with a blast.

وَسِعَ
He has encompassed
كُلَّ
all
شَىۡءٍ
things
عِلۡمًا
٩٨(in) knowledge
Your god is only Allāh, except for whom there is no deity. He has encompassed all things in knowledge."
20:99
كَذٰ لِكَ
Thus
نَقُصُّ
We relate
عَلَيۡكَ
to you
مِنۡ
from
أَنۢب َا ٓءِ
(the) news
مَا
(of) what
قَدۡ
has preceded
سَبَقَۚ
has preceded
وَقَدۡ
And certainly
ءَاتَيۡنَـٰ كَ
We have given you
مِن
from
Us
ذِكۡرًا
٩٩a Reminder
Thus, [O Muḥammad], We relate to you from the news of what has preceded. And We have certainly given you from Us a message [i.e., the Qur’ān].
20:100
مَّنۡ
Whoever
أَعۡرَضَ
turns away
عَنۡهُ
from it
فَإِنّ َهُۥ
then indeed, he
يَحۡمِلُ
will bear
يَوۡمَ
(on the) Day
(of) Resurrection
وِزۡرًا
١٠٠a burden
Whoever turns away from it - then indeed, he will bear on the Day of Resurrection a burden [i.e., great sin],
20:101
خَـٰ لِدِينَ
Abiding forever
فِيهِۖ
in it
وَسَا ٓءَ
and evil
لَهُمۡ
for them
يَوۡمَ
(on the) Day
(of) the Resurrection
حِمۡلاً
١٠١(as) a load
[Abiding] eternally therein,1 and evil it is for them on the Day of Resurrection as a load -
20:102
يَوۡمَ
(The) Day
يُنف َخُ
will be blown
فِى
in
the Trumpet
وَنَحۡشُرُ
and We will gather
the criminals
يَوۡمَئِذٍ
that Day
blue-eyed
The Day the Horn will be blown. And We will gather the criminals, that Day, blue-eyed.1
20:103
يَتَخَـٰ فَتُونَ
They are murmuring
بَيۡنَهُمۡ
among themselves
إِن
Not
you remained
إِلَّا
except (for)
عَشۡرًا
١٠٣ten
They will murmur among themselves, "You remained not but ten [days in the world]."
20:104
نَّحۡنُ
We
أَعۡلَمُ
know best
بِمَا
what
يَقُولُونَ
they will say
إِذۡ
when
يَقُولُ
will say
أَمۡثَلُهُمۡ
(the) best of them
طَرِيقَةً
(in) conduct
إِن
Not
you remained
إِلَّا
except (for)
يَوۡمًا
١٠٤a day
We are most knowing of what they say when the best of them in manner [i.e., wisdom or speech] will say, "You remained not but one day."
20:105
وَيَسۡــَٔلُونَكَ
And they ask you
عَنِ
about
the mountains
فَقُلۡ
so say
يَنس ِفُهَا
Will blast them
رَبِّى
my Lord
نَسۡفًا
١٠٥(into) particles
And they ask you about the mountains, so say, "My Lord will blow them away with a blast.1
20:106
فَيَذَرُهَا
Then He will leave it
قَاعًا
a level
plain
And He will leave it [i.e., the earth] a level plain;
20:107
لَّا
Not
تَرَىٰ
you will see
فِيهَا
in it
عِوَجًا
any crookedness
and not
أَمۡتًا
١٠٧any curve
You will not see therein a depression or an elevation."
20:108
يَوۡمَئِذٍ
On that Day
they will follow
the caller
لَا
no
عِوَجَ
deviation
لَهُۥ ۖ
from it
وَخَشَعَتِ
And (will be) humbled
the voices
لِلرَّحۡمَـٰ نِ
for the Most Gracious
فَلَا
so not
تَسۡمَعُ
you will hear
إِلَّا
except
هَمۡسًا
١٠٨a faint sound
That Day, they [i.e., everyone] will follow [the call of] the Caller1 [with] no deviation therefrom, and [all] voices will be stilled before the Most Merciful, so you will not hear except a whisper [of footsteps].
20:109
يَوۡمَئِذٍ
(On) that Day
not
تَنف َعُ
will benefit
the intercession
إِلَّا
except
مَنۡ
(to) whom
أَذِنَ
has given permission
لَهُ
[to him]
the Most Gracious
وَرَضِىَ
and He has accepted
لَهُۥ
for him
قَوۡلاً
١٠٩a word
That Day, no intercession will benefit except [that of] one to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and has accepted his word.
20:110
يَعۡلَمُ
He knows
مَا
what
بَيۡنَ
(is) before them
أَيۡدِيهِمۡ
(is) before them
وَمَا
and what
خَلۡفَهُمۡ
(is) behind them
وَلَا
while not
يُحِيطُونَ
they encompass
بِهِۦ
it
عِلۡمًا
١١٠(in) knowledge
He [i.e., Allāh] knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them,1 but they do not encompass it [i.e., what He knows] in knowledge.
20:111
۞وَعَنَتِ
And (will be) humbled
the faces
لِلۡحَىِّ
before the Ever-Living
the Self-Subsisting
وَقَدۡ
And verily
خَابَ
will have failed
مَنۡ
(he) who
حَمَلَ
carried
ظُلۡمًا
١١١wrongdoing
And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining.1 And he will have failed who carries injustice.2
20:112
وَمَن
But (he) who
does
مِنَ
of
the righteous deeds
وَهُوَ
while he
مُؤۡمِنٌ
(is) a believer
then not
يَخَافُ
he will fear
ظُلۡمًا
injustice
and not
هَضۡمًا
١١٢deprivation
But he who does of righteous deeds while he is a believer - he will neither fear injustice nor deprivation.
20:113
وَكَذٰ لِكَ
And thus
أَنز َلۡنَـٰ هُ
We have sent it down
قُرۡءَانًا
(the) Quran
عَرَبِيًّا
(in) Arabic
and We have explained
فِيهِ
in it
مِنَ
of
the warnings
لَعَلَّهُمۡ
that they may
يَتَّقُونَ
fear
أَوۡ
or
يُحۡدِثُ
it may cause
لَهُمۡ
[for] them
ذِكۡرًا
١١٣remembrance
And thus We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’ān1 and have diversified therein the warnings that perhaps they will avoid [sin] or it would cause them remembrance.
20:114
فَتَعَـٰ لَى
So high (above all)
(is) Allah
the King
the True
وَلَا
And (do) not
تَعۡجَلۡ
hasten
بِٱ لۡقُرۡءَانِ
with the Quran
مِن
before
before
أَن
[that]
is completed
إِلَيۡكَ
to you
وَحۡيُهُۥ ۖ
its revelation
وَقُل
and say
رَّبِّ
My Lord
زِدۡ نِى
Increase me
عِلۡمًا
١١٤(in) knowledge
So high [above all] is Allāh, the Sovereign,1 the Truth.2 And, [O Muḥammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur’ān before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
20:115
وَلَقَدۡ
And verily
عَهِدۡ نَآ
We made a covenant
إِلَىٰٓ
with
ءَادَمَ
Adam
مِن
before
before
فَنَسِىَ
but he forgot
وَلَمۡ
and not
نَجِدۡ
We found
لَهُۥ
in him
عَزۡمًا
١١٥determination
And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.1
20:116
وَإِذۡ
And when
قُلۡنَا
We said
لِلۡمَلَـٰٓ ئِكَةِ
to the Angels
Prostrate
لِأَدَمَ
to Adam
فَسَجَدُوٓ اۡ
then they prostrated
إِلَّآ
except
إِبۡ لِيسَ
Iblis
أَبَىٰ
١١٦he refused
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except Iblees;1 he refused.
20:117
فَقُلۡنَا
Then We said
يَـٰٓـ ـَٔـادَمُ
O Adam
إِنّ َ
Indeed
هَـٰ ذَا
this
عَدُوٌّ
(is) an enemy
to you
وَلِزَوۡجِكَ
and to your wife
فَلَا
So not
يُخۡرِجَنّ َكُمَا
(let) him drive you both
مِنَ
from
Paradise
فَتَشۡقَىٰٓ
١١٧so (that) you would suffer
So We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer.
20:118
إِنّ َ
Indeed
لَكَ
for you
أَلَّا
that not
تَجُوعَ
you will be hungry
فِيهَا
therein
وَلَا
and not
تَعۡرَىٰ
١١٨you will be unclothed
Indeed, it is [promised] for you not to be hungry therein or be unclothed.
20:119
وَأَنّ َكَ
And that you
لَا
not
تَظۡمَؤُاۡ
will suffer from thirst
فِيهَا
therein
وَلَا
and not
تَضۡحَىٰ
١١٩exposed to the sun's heat
And indeed, you will not be thirsty therein or be hot from the sun."
20:120
فَوَسۡوَسَ
Then whispered
إِلَيۡهِ
to him
Shaitaan
قَالَ
he said
يَـٰٓـ ـَٔـادَمُ
O Adam
هَلۡ
Shall
أَدُلُّكَ
I direct you
عَلَىٰ
to
شَجَرَةِ
(the) tree
(of) the Eternity
وَمُلۡكٍ
and a kingdom
not
يَبۡ لَىٰ
١٢٠(that will) deteriorate
Then Satan whispered to him; he said, "O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?"
20:121
فَأَكَلَا
Then they both ate
مِنۡهَا
from it
فَبَدَتۡ
so became apparent
لَهُمَا
to them
سَوۡءٰ تُهُمَا
their shame
وَطَفِقَا
and they began
يَخۡصِفَانِ
(to) fasten
عَلَيۡهِمَا
on themselves
مِن
from
(the) leaves
(of) Paradise
وَعَصَىٰٓ
And Adam disobeyed
ءَادَمُ
And Adam disobeyed
رَبَّهُۥ
his Lord
فَغَوَىٰ
١٢١and erred
And they [i.e., Adam and his wife] ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred.
20:122
ثُمّ َ
Then
chose him
رَبُّهُۥ
his Lord
فَتَابَ
and turned
عَلَيۡهِ
to him
وَهَدَىٰ
١٢٢and guided (him)
Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him].
20:123
قَالَ
He said
Go down
مِنۡهَا
from it
جَمِيعَۢاۖ
all
some of you
لِبَعۡضٍ
to others
عَدُوٌّۖ
(as) enemy
Then if
يَأۡتِيَنّ َكُم
comes to you
from Me
هُدًى
guidance
then whoever
follows
هُدَاىَ
My guidance
فَلَا
then not
يَضِلُّ
he will go astray
وَلَا
and not
يَشۡقَىٰ
١٢٣suffer
[Allāh] said, "Descend from it [i.e., Paradise] - all, [your descendants] being enemies to one another. And if there should come to you guidance from Me - then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in the world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter].
20:124
وَمَنۡ
And whoever
أَعۡرَضَ
turns away
عَن
from
My remembrance
فَإِنّ َ
then indeed
لَهُۥ
for him
مَعِيشَةً
(is) a life
straitened
and We will gather him
يَوۡمَ
(on the) Day
(of) the Resurrection
أَعۡمَىٰ
١٢٤blind
And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather [i.e., raise] him on the Day of Resurrection blind."
20:125
قَالَ
He will say
رَبِّ
My Lord
لِمَ
Why
حَشَرۡتَنِىٓ
You raised me
أَعۡمَىٰ
blind
وَقَدۡ
while [verily]
كُنت ُ
I had
بَصِيرًا
١٢٥sight
He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?"
20:126
قَالَ
He will say
كَذٰ لِكَ
Thus
أَتَتۡكَ
came to you
ءَايَـٰ تُنَا
Our Signs
فَنَسِيتَهَاۖ
but you forgot them
وَكَذٰ لِكَ
and thus
today
تُنس َىٰ
١٢٦you will be forgotten
[Allāh] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot [i.e., disregarded] them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."
20:127
وَكَذٰ لِكَ
And thus
نَجۡ زِى
We recompense
مَنۡ
(he) who
أَسۡرَفَ
transgresses
وَلَمۡ
and not
يُؤۡمِنۢ
believes
in (the) Signs
رَبِّهِۦ ۚ
(of) his Lord
وَلَعَذَابُ
And surely (the) punishment
(of) the Hereafter
أَشَدُّ
(is) more severe
وَأَبۡ قَىٰٓ
١٢٧and more lasting
And thus do We recompense he who transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.1
20:128
أَفَلَمۡ
Then has not
يَهۡدِ
it guided
لَهُمۡ
[for] them
كَمۡ
how many
أَهۡلَكۡنَا
We (have) destroyed
قَبۡ لَهُم
before them
of
the generations
يَمۡشُونَ
(as) they walk
فِى
in
مَسَـٰ كِنِهِمۡۗ
their dwellings
إِنّ َ
Indeed
فِى
in
ذٰ لِكَ
that
لَأَيَـٰ تٍ
surely (are) Signs
for possessors
(of) intelligence
Then, has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.
20:129
وَلَوۡلَا
And if not
كَلِمَةٌ
(for) a Word
(that) preceded
مِن
from
your Lord
لَكَانَ
surely (would) have been
لِزَامًا
an obligation
and a term
determined
And if not for a word1 that preceded from your Lord, it [i.e., punishment] would have been an obligation [due immediately],2 and [if not for] a specified term [decreed].
20:130
فَٱ صۡبِرۡ
So be patient
عَلَىٰ
over
مَا
what
يَقُولُونَ
they say
وَسَبِّحۡ
and glorify
بِحَمۡدِ
with praise
رَبِّكَ
(of) your Lord
قَبۡ لَ
before
طُلُوعِ
(the) rising
(of) the sun
وَقَبۡ لَ
and before
غُرُوبِهَاۖ
its setting
وَمِنۡ
and from
ءَانَآىِٕ
(the) hours
(of) the night
فَسَبِّحۡ
and glorify
وَأَطۡ رَافَ
(at the) ends
(of) the day
لَعَلَّكَ
so that you may
تَرۡضَىٰ
١٣٠be satisfied
So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.
20:131
وَلَا
And (do) not
تَمُدَّنّ َ
extend
عَيۡنَيۡكَ
your eyes
إِلَىٰ
towards
مَا
what
مَتَّعۡنَا
We have given for enjoyment
بِهِۦٓ
[with it]
أَزۡوٰ جًا
pairs
of them
زَهۡرَةَ
(the) splendor
(of) the life
(of) the world
لِنَفۡتِنَهُمۡ
that We may test them
فِيهِۚ
in it
وَرِزۡقُ
And (the) provision
رَبِّكَ
(of) your Lord
خَيۡرٌ
(is) better
and more lasting
And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.
20:132
وَأۡمُرۡ
And enjoin
أَهۡلَكَ
(on) your family
بِٱ ل صَّلَو ٰ ةِ
the prayer
وَٱ صۡطَبِرۡ
and be steadfast
عَلَيۡهَاۖ
therein
لَا
Not
نَسۡــَٔلُكَ
We ask you
رِزۡقًاۖ
(for) provision
We
نَرۡزُقُكَۗ
provide (for) you
وَٱ لۡعَـٰ قِبَةُ
and the outcome
لِلتَّقۡ وَىٰ
١٣٢(is) for the righteous[ness]
And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.
20:133
وَقَالُواۡ
And they say
لَوۡلَا
Why not
يَأۡتِينَا
he brings us
بِـَٔـايَةٍ
a sign
from
his Lord
أَوَلَمۡ
Has not
تَأۡتِهِم
come to them
evidence
مَا
(of) what
فِى
(was) in
the Scriptures
the former
And they say, "Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?" Has there not come to them evidence of what was in the former scriptures?1
20:134
وَلَوۡ
And if
أَنّ َآ
We
أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰ هُم
(had) destroyed them
with a punishment
before him
before him
لَقَالُواۡ
surely they (would) have said
رَبَّنَا
Our Lord
لَوۡلَآ
why not
أَرۡسَلۡتَ
You sent
إِلَيۡنَا
to us
رَسُولاً
a Messenger
so we (could) have followed
ءَايَـٰ تِكَ
Your signs
مِن
before
before
أَن
[that]
we were humiliated
وَنَخۡزَىٰ
١٣٤and disgraced
And if We had destroyed them with a punishment before him,1 they would have said, "Our Lord, why did You not send to us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses [i.e., teachings] before we were humiliated and disgraced?"
20:135
قُلۡ
Say
كُلٌّ
Each
(is) waiting
so await
فَسَتَعۡلَمُونَ
Then you will know
مَنۡ
who
أَصۡحَـٰ بُ
(are the) companions
(of) the way
[the] even
وَمَنِ
and who
is guided
Say, "Each [of us] is waiting;1 so wait. For you will know who are the companions of the sound path and who is guided."
