لَهُۥ
To Him (belongs)
مَا
whatever
فِى
(is) in
ٱلسَّمَـٰوٰتِ

ٱلۡأَرۡضِ

ٱللَّهُ
Allah
لَآ
(there is) no

god
إِلَّا
except
هُوَ‌ۖ
Him
لَهُ
To Him (belong)
ٱلۡأَسۡمَآءُ
the Names
ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ

20:9
وَهَلۡ
And has
أَتَـٰكَ
come to you
حَدِيثُ
the narration
مُوسَىٰٓ
(of) Musa
٩
And has the story of Moses reached you? -
20:10
إِذۡ
When
رَءَا
he saw
نَارًا
a fire
فَقَالَ
then he said
لِأَهۡلِهِ
to his family
ٱمۡكُثُوٓاۡ
Stay here
إِنِّىٓ
indeed, I
ءَانَسۡتُ
[I] perceived
نَارًا
a fire
لَّعَلِّىٓ
perhaps I (can)
ءَاتِيكُم
bring you
مِّنۡهَا
therefrom
بِقَبَسٍ
a burning brand
أَوۡ
or
أَجِدُ
I find
عَلَى
at
ٱلنَّارِ
the fire
هُدًى
guidance
١٠
When he saw a fire and said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire; perhaps I can bring you a torch or find at the fire some guidance."
20:11
فَلَمَّآ
Then when
أَتَـٰهَا
he came to it
نُودِىَ
he was called
يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ
O Musa
١١
And when he came to it, he was called, "O Moses,
20:12
إِنِّىٓ
Indeed, [I]
أَنَاۡ
I Am
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
فَٱخۡلَعۡ
so remove
نَعۡلَيۡكَ‌ۖ
your shoes
إِنَّكَ
Indeed, you
بِٱلۡوَادِ
(are) in the valley
ٱلۡمُقَدَّسِ
the sacred
طُوًى
(of) Tuwa
١٢
Indeed, I am your Lord, so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the blessed valley of Ṭuwā.
20:13
وَأَنَا
And I
ٱخۡتَرۡتُكَ
(have) chosen you
فَٱسۡتَمِعۡ
so listen
لِمَا
to what
يُوحَىٰٓ
is revealed
١٣
And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed [to you].
20:14
إِنَّنِىٓ
Indeed, [I]
أَنَا
I Am
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
لَآ
(There is) no
إِلَـٰهَ
god
إِلَّآ
but
أَنَاۡ
I
فَٱعۡبُدۡنِى
so worship Me
وَأَقِمِ
and establish
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ
the prayer
لِذِكۡرِىٓ
for My remembrance
١٤
Indeed, I am Allāh. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.
20:15
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱلسَّاعَةَ
the Hour
ءَاتِيَةٌ
(will be) coming
أَكَادُ
I almost
أُخۡفِيهَا
[I] hide it
لِتُجۡزَىٰ
that may be recompensed
كُلُّ
every
نَفۡسِۭ
soul
بِمَا
for what
تَسۡعَىٰ
it strives
١٥
Indeed, the Hour is coming - I almost conceal it1 - so that every soul may be recompensed according to that for which it strives.
20:16
فَلَا
So (do) not
يَصُدَّنَّكَ
(let) avert you
عَنۡهَا
from it
مَن
(one) who
لَّا
(does) not
يُؤۡمِنُ
believe
بِهَا
in it
وَٱتَّبَعَ
and follows
هَوَٮٰهُ
his desires
فَتَرۡدَىٰ
lest you perish
١٦
So do not let one avert you from it1 who does not believe in it and follows his desire, for you [then] would perish.
20:17
وَمَا
And what
تِلۡكَ
(is) that
بِيَمِينِكَ
in your right hand
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ
O Musa
١٧
And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?"
20:18
قَالَ
He said
هِىَ
It
عَصَاىَ
(is) my staff
أَتَوَكَّؤُاۡ
I lean
عَلَيۡهَا
upon it
وَأَهُشُّ
and I bring down leaves
بِهَا
with it
عَلَىٰ
for
غَنَمِى
my sheep
وَلِىَ
and for me
فِيهَا
in it
مَـَٔـارِبُ
(are) uses
أُخۡرَىٰ
other
١٨
He said, "It is my staff; I lean upon it, and I bring down leaves for my sheep and I have therein other uses."
20:19
قَالَ
He said
أَلۡقِهَا
Throw it down
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ
O Musa
١٩
[Allāh] said, "Throw it down, O Moses."
20:20
فَأَلۡقَـٰهَا
So he threw it down
فَإِذَا
and behold
هِىَ
It
حَيَّةٌ
(was) a snake
تَسۡعَىٰ
moving swiftly
٢٠
So he threw it down, and thereupon it was a snake, moving swiftly.
20:21
قَالَ
He said
خُذۡهَا
Seize it
وَلَا
and (do) not
تَخَفۡ‌ۖ
fear
سَنُعِيدُهَا
We will return it
سِيرَتَهَا
(to) its state
ٱلۡأُولَىٰ
the former
٢١
[Allāh] said, "Seize it and fear not; We will return it to its former condition.
20:22
وَٱضۡمُمۡ
And draw near
يَدَكَ
your hand
إِلَىٰ
to
جَنَاحِكَ
your side
تَخۡرُجۡ
it will come out
بَيۡضَآءَ
white
مِنۡ
without any
غَيۡرِ
without any
سُوٓءٍ
disease
ءَايَةً
(as) a sign
أُخۡرَىٰ
another
٢٢
And draw in your hand to your side; it will come out white without disease - another sign,
20:23
لِنُرِيَكَ
That We may show you
مِنۡ
of
ءَايَـٰتِنَا
Our Signs
ٱلۡكُبۡرَى
the Greatest
٢٣
That We may show you [some] of Our greater signs.
20:24
ٱذۡهَبۡ
Go
إِلَىٰ
to
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
Firaun
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, he
طَغَىٰ
(has) transgressed
٢٤
Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed [i.e., tyrannized]."
20:25
قَالَ
He said
رَبِّ
My Lord
ٱشۡرَحۡ
Expand
لِى
for me
صَدۡرِى
my breast
٢٥
[Moses] said, "My Lord, expand [i.e., relax] for me my breast [with assurance]
20:26
وَيَسِّرۡ
And ease
لِىٓ
for me
أَمۡرِى
my task
٢٦
And ease for me my task
20:27
وَٱحۡلُلۡ
And untie
عُقۡدَةً
(the) knot
مِّن
from
لِّسَانِى
my tongue
٢٧
And untie the knot from my tongue
20:28
يَفۡقَهُواۡ
That they may understand
قَوۡلِى
my speech
٢٨
That they may understand my speech.
20:29
وَٱجۡعَل
And appoint
لِّى
for me
وَزِيرًا
a minister
مِّنۡ
from
أَهۡلِى
my family
٢٩
And appoint for me a minister [i.e., assistant] from my family -
20:30
هَـٰرُونَ
Harun
أَخِى
my brother
٣٠
Aaron, my brother.
20:31
ٱشۡدُدۡ
Reinforce
بِهِۦٓ
through him
أَزۡرِى
my strength
٣١
Increase through him my strength
20:32
وَأَشۡرِكۡهُ
And make him share
فِىٓ
[in]
أَمۡرِى
my task
٣٢
And let him share my task
20:33
كَىۡ
That
نُسَبِّحَكَ
we may glorify You
كَثِيرًا
much
٣٣
That we may exalt You much
20:34
وَنَذۡكُرَكَ
And [we] remember You
كَثِيرًا
much
٣٤
And remember You much.
20:35
إِنَّكَ
Indeed, [You]
كُنتَ
You are
بِنَا
of us
بَصِيرًا
All-Seer
٣٥
Indeed, You are of us ever Seeing."
20:36
قَالَ
He said
قَدۡ
Verily
أُوتِيتَ
you are granted
سُؤۡلَكَ
your request
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ
O Musa
٣٦
[Allāh] said, "You have been granted your request, O Moses.
20:37
وَلَقَدۡ
And indeed
مَنَنَّا
We conferred a favor
عَلَيۡكَ
on you
مَرَّةً
another time
أُخۡرَىٰٓ
another time
٣٧
And We had already conferred favor upon you another time,
20:38
إِذۡ
When
أَوۡحَيۡنَآ
We inspired
إِلَىٰٓ
to
أُمِّكَ
your mother
مَا
what
يُوحَىٰٓ
is inspired
٣٨
When We inspired to your mother what We inspired,
20:39
أَنِ
That
ٱقۡذِفِيهِ
cast him
فِى
in
ٱلتَّابُوتِ
the chest
فَٱقۡذِفِيهِ
then cast it
فِى
in
ٱلۡيَمِّ
the river
فَلۡيُلۡقِهِ
then let cast it
ٱلۡيَمُّ
the river
بِٱلسَّاحِلِ
on the bank
يَأۡخُذۡهُ
will take him
عَدُوٌّ
an enemy
لِّى
to Me
وَعَدُوٌّ
and an enemy
لَّهُۥ‌ۚ
to him
وَأَلۡقَيۡتُ
And I cast
عَلَيۡكَ
over you
مَحَبَّةً
love
مِّنِّى
from Me
وَلِتُصۡنَعَ
and that you may be brought up
عَلَىٰ
under
عَيۡنِىٓ
My eye
٣٩
[Saying], 'Cast him into the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will throw it onto the bank; there will take him an enemy to Me and an enemy to him.' And I bestowed upon you love from Me1 that you would be brought up under My eye [i.e., observation and care].
20:40
إِذۡ
When
تَمۡشِىٓ
was going
أُخۡتُكَ
your sister
فَتَقُولُ
and she said
هَلۡ
Shall
أَدُلُّكُمۡ
I show you
عَلَىٰ
[to]
مَن
(one) who
يَكۡفُلُهُۥ‌ۖ
will nurse and rear him
فَرَجَعۡنَـٰكَ
So We returned you
إِلَىٰٓ
to
أُمِّكَ
your mother
كَىۡ
that
تَقَرَّ
may be cooled
عَيۡنُهَا
her eyes
وَلَا
and not
تَحۡزَنَ‌ۚ
she grieves
وَقَتَلۡتَ
And you killed
نَفۡسًا
a man
فَنَجَّيۡنَـٰكَ
but We saved you
مِنَ
from
ٱلۡغَمِّ
the distress
وَفَتَنَّـٰكَ
and We tried you
فُتُونًا‌ۚ
(with) a trial
فَلَبِثۡتَ
Then you remained
سِنِينَ
(some) years
فِىٓ
with
أَهۡلِ
(the) people
مَدۡيَنَ
(of) Madyan
ثُمَّ
Then
جِئۡتَ
you came
عَلَىٰ
at
قَدَرٍ
the decreed (time)
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ
O Musa
٤٠
[And We favored you] when your sister went and said, 'Shall I direct you to someone who will be responsible for him?' So We restored you to your mother that she might be content and not grieve. And you killed someone,1 but We saved you from retaliation and tried you with a [severe] trial. And you remained [some] years among the people of Madyan. Then you came [here] at the decreed time, O Moses.
20:41
وَٱصۡطَنَعۡتُكَ
And I (have) chosen you
لِنَفۡسِى
for Myself
٤١
And I produced you for Myself.1
20:42
ٱذۡهَبۡ
Go
أَنتَ
you
وَأَخُوكَ
and your brother
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِى
with My Signs
وَلَا
and (do) not
تَنِيَا
slacken
فِى
in
ذِكۡرِى
My remembrance
٤٢
Go, you and your brother, with My signs and do not slacken in My remembrance.
20:43
ٱذۡهَبَآ
Go, both of you
إِلَىٰ
to
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
Firaun
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, he
طَغَىٰ
(has) transgressed
٤٣
Go, both of you, to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.
20:44
فَقُولَا
And speak
لَهُۥ
to him
قَوۡلاً
a word
لَّيِّنًا
gentle
لَّعَلَّهُۥ
perhaps he
يَتَذَكَّرُ
may take heed
أَوۡ
or
يَخۡشَىٰ
fear
٤٤
And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allāh]."
20:45
قَالَا
They said
رَبَّنَآ
Our Lord
إِنَّنَا
Indeed, we
نَخَافُ
fear
أَن
that
يَفۡرُطَ
he will hasten
عَلَيۡنَآ
against us
أَوۡ
or
أَن
that
يَطۡغَىٰ
he will transgress
٤٥
They said, "Our Lord, indeed we are afraid that he will hasten [punishment] against us or that he will transgress."
20:46
قَالَ
He said
لَا
(Do) not
تَخَافَآ‌ۖ
fear
إِنَّنِى
Indeed, I Am
مَعَكُمَآ
with you both
أَسۡمَعُ
I hear
وَأَرَىٰ
and I see
٤٦
[Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see.
20:47
فَأۡتِيَاهُ
So go to him
فَقُولَآ
and say
إِنَّا
Indeed, we
رَسُولَا
both (are) Messengers
رَبِّكَ
(of) your Lord
فَأَرۡسِلۡ
so send
مَعَنَا
with us
بَنِىٓ
(the) Children of Israel
إِسۡرٰٓءِيلَ
(the) Children of Israel
وَلَا
and (do) not
تُعَذِّبۡهُمۡ‌ۖ
torment them
قَدۡ
Verily
جِئۡنَـٰكَ
we came to you
بِـَٔـايَةٍ
with a Sign
مِّن
from
رَّبِّكَ‌ۖ
your Lord
وَٱلسَّلَـٰمُ
And peace
عَلَىٰ
on
مَنِ
(one) who
ٱتَّبَعَ
follows
ٱلۡهُدَىٰٓ
the Guidance
٤٧
So go to him and say, 'Indeed, we are messengers of your Lord, so send with us the Children of Israel and do not torment them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord. And peace1 will be upon he who follows the guidance.
20:48
إِنَّا
Indeed, we
قَدۡ
verily
أُوحِىَ
it has been revealed
إِلَيۡنَآ
to us
أَنَّ
that
ٱلۡعَذَابَ
the punishment
عَلَىٰ
(will be) on
مَن
(one) who
كَذَّبَ
denies
وَتَوَلَّىٰ
and turns away
٤٨
Indeed, it has been revealed to us that the punishment will be upon whoever denies and turns away.'"
20:49
قَالَ
He said
فَمَن
Then who
رَّبُّكُمَا
(is) your Lord
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ
O Musa
٤٩
[Pharaoh] said, "So who is the Lord of you two, O Moses?"
20:50
قَالَ
He said
رَبُّنَا
Our Lord
ٱلَّذِىٓ
(is) the One Who
أَعۡطَىٰ
gave
كُلَّ
(to) every
شَىۡءٍ
thing
خَلۡقَهُۥ
its form
ثُمَّ
then
هَدَىٰ
He guided (it)
٥٠
He said, "Our Lord is He who gave each thing its form and then guided [it]."
20:51
قَالَ
He said
فَمَا
Then what
بَالُ
(is the) case
ٱلۡقُرُونِ
(of) the generations
ٱلۡأُولَىٰ
(of) the former
٥١
[Pharaoh] said, "Then what is the case of the former generations?"
20:52
قَالَ
He said
عِلۡمُهَا
Its knowledge
عِندَ
(is) with
رَبِّى
my Lord
فِى
in
كِتَـٰبٍ‌ۖ
a Record
لَّا
Not
يَضِلُّ
errs
رَبِّى
my Lord
وَلَا
and not
يَنسَى
forgets
٥٢
[Moses] said, "The knowledge thereof is with my Lord in a record. My Lord neither errs nor forgets."
20:53
ٱلَّذِى
The One Who
جَعَلَ
made
لَكُمُ
for you
ٱلۡأَرۡضَ
the earth
مَهۡدًا
(as) a bed
وَسَلَكَ
and inserted
لَكُمۡ
for you
فِيهَا
therein
سُبُلاً
ways
وَأَنزَلَ
and sent down
مِنَ
from
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
the sky
مَآءً
water
فَأَخۡرَجۡنَا
then We (have) brought forth
بِهِۦٓ
with it
أَزۡوٰجًا
pairs
مِّن
of
نَّبَاتٍ
plants
شَتَّىٰ
diverse
٥٣
[It is He] who has made for you the earth as a bed [spread out] and inserted therein for you roadways and sent down from the sky, rain and produced thereby categories of various plants.
20:54
كُلُواۡ
Eat
وَٱرۡعَوۡاۡ
and pasture
أَنۡعَـٰمَكُمۡ‌ۗ
your cattle
إِنَّ
Indeed
فِى
in
ذٰلِكَ
that
لَأَيَـٰتٍ
surely (are) Signs
لِّأُوۡلِى
for possessors
ٱلنُّهَىٰ
(of) intelligence
٥٤
Eat [therefrom] and pasture your livestock. Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.
20:55
۞مِنۡهَا
From it
خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ
We created you
وَفِيهَا
and in it
نُعِيدُكُمۡ
We will return you
وَمِنۡهَا
and from it
نُخۡرِجُكُمۡ
We will bring you out
تَارَةً
time
أُخۡرَىٰ
another
٥٥
From it [i.e., the earth] We created you, and into it We will return you, and from it We will extract you another time.
20:56
وَلَقَدۡ
And verily
أَرَيۡنَـٰهُ
We showed him
ءَايَـٰتِنَا
Our Signs
كُلَّهَا
all of them
فَكَذَّبَ
but he denied
وَأَبَىٰ
and refused
٥٦
And We certainly showed him [i.e., Pharaoh] Our signs - all of them - but he denied and refused.
20:57
قَالَ
He said
أَجِئۡتَنَا
Have you come to us
لِتُخۡرِجَنَا
to drive us out
مِنۡ
of
أَرۡضِنَا
our land
بِسِحۡرِكَ
with your magic
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ
O Musa
٥٧
He said, "Have you come to us to drive us out of our land with your magic, O Moses?
20:58
فَلَنَأۡتِيَنَّكَ
Then we will surely produce for you
بِسِحۡرٍ
magic
مِّثۡلِهِۦ
like it
فَٱجۡعَلۡ
So make
بَيۡنَنَا
between us
وَبَيۡنَكَ
and between you
مَوۡعِدًا
an appointment
لَّا
not
نُخۡلِفُهُۥ
we will fail it
نَحۡنُ
[we]
وَلَآ
and not
أَنتَ
you
مَكَانًا
(in) a place
سُوًى
even
٥٨
Then we will surely bring you magic like it, so make between us and you an appointment, which we will not fail to keep and neither will you, in a place assigned."1
20:59
قَالَ
He said
مَوۡعِدُكُمۡ
Your appointment
يَوۡمُ
(is on the) day
ٱلزِّينَةِ
(of) the festival
وَأَن
and that
يُحۡشَرَ
will be assembled
ٱلنَّاسُ
the people
ضُحًى
(at) forenoon
٥٩
[Moses] said, "Your appointment is on the day of the festival when the people assemble at mid-morning."1
20:60
فَتَوَلَّىٰ
Then went away
فِرۡعَوۡنُ
Firaun
فَجَمَعَ
and put together
كَيۡدَهُۥ
his plan
ثُمَّ
then
أَتَىٰ
came
٦٠
So Pharaoh went away, put together his plan, and then came [to Moses].

a lie
فَيُسۡحِتَكُم
lest He will destroy you
بِعَذَابٍ‌ۖ
with a punishment
وَقَدۡ
And verily
خَابَ
he failed
مَنِ
who
ٱفۡتَرَىٰ
invented
٦١
Moses said to them [i.e., the magicians summoned by Pharaoh], "Woe to you! Do not invent a lie against Allāh or He will exterminate you with a punishment; and he has failed who invents [such falsehood]."
20:62
فَتَنَـٰزَعُوٓاۡ
Then they disputed
أَمۡرَهُم
(in) their affair
بَيۡنَهُمۡ
among them
وَأَسَرُّواۡ
and they kept secret
ٱلنَّجۡوَىٰ
the private conversation
٦٢
So they disputed over their affair among themselves and concealed their private conversation.
20:63
قَالُوٓاۡ
They said
إِنۡ
Indeed
هَـٰذٰنِ
these two
لَسَـٰحِرٰنِ
[two] magicians
يُرِيدَانِ
they intend
أَن
that
يُخۡرِجَاكُم
they drive you out
مِّنۡ
of
أَرۡضِكُم
your land
بِسِحۡرِهِمَا
with their magic
وَيَذۡهَبَا
and do away
بِطَرِيقَتِكُمُ
with your way
ٱلۡمُثۡلَىٰ
the exemplary
٦٣
They said, "Indeed, these are two magicians who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and do away with your most exemplary way [i.e., religion or tradition].
20:64
فَأَجۡمِعُواۡ
So put together
كَيۡدَكُمۡ
your plan
ثُمَّ
then
ٱئۡتُواۡ
come
صَفًّا‌ۚ
(in) a line
وَقَدۡ
And verily
أَفۡلَحَ
(will be) successful
ٱلۡيَوۡمَ
today
مَنِ
who
ٱسۡتَعۡلَىٰ
overcomes
٦٤
So resolve upon your plan and then come [forward] in line. And he has succeeded today who overcomes."
20:65
قَالُواۡ
They said
يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ
O Musa
إِمَّآ
Either
أَن
[that]
تُلۡقِىَ
you throw
وَإِمَّآ
or
أَن
[that]
نَّكُونَ
we will be
أَوَّلَ
the first
مَنۡ
who
أَلۡقَىٰ
throws
٦٥
They said, "O Moses, either you throw or we will be the first to throw."
20:66
قَالَ
He said
بَلۡ
Nay
أَلۡقُواۡ‌ۖ
you throw
فَإِذَا
Then behold
حِبَالُهُمۡ
Their ropes
وَعِصِيُّهُمۡ
and their staffs
يُخَيَّلُ
seemed
إِلَيۡهِ
to him
مِن
by
سِحۡرِهِمۡ
their magic
أَنَّهَا
that they
تَسۡعَىٰ
(were) moving
٦٦
He said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes].
20:67
فَأَوۡجَسَ
So sensed
فِى
in
نَفۡسِهِۦ
himself
خِيفَةً
a fear
مُّوسَىٰ
Musa
٦٧
And he sensed within himself apprehension, did Moses.
20:68
قُلۡنَا
We said
لَا
(Do) not
تَخَفۡ
fear
إِنَّكَ
Indeed, you
أَنتَ
you
ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ
(will be) superior
٦٨
We [i.e., Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior.
20:69
وَأَلۡقِ
And throw
مَا
what
فِى
(is) in
يَمِينِكَ
your right hand
تَلۡقَفۡ
it will swallow up
مَا
what
صَنَعُوٓاۡ‌ۖ
they have made
إِنَّمَا
Only
صَنَعُواۡ
they (have) made
كَيۡدُ
a trick
سَـٰحِرٍ‌ۖ
(of) a magician
وَلَا
and not
يُفۡلِحُ
will be successful
ٱلسَّاحِرُ
the magician
حَيۡثُ
wherever
أَتَىٰ
he comes
٦٩
And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is."
20:70
فَأُلۡقِىَ
So were thrown down
ٱلسَّحَرَةُ
the magicians
سُجَّدًا
prostrating
قَالُوٓاۡ
They said
ءَامَنَّا
We believe
بِرَبِّ
in (the) Lord
هَـٰرُونَ
(of) Harun
وَمُوسَىٰ
and Musa
٧٠
So the magicians fell down in prostration.1 They said, "We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."
20:71
قَالَ
He said
ءَامَنتُمۡ
You believe
لَهُۥ
[to] him
قَبۡلَ
before
أَنۡ
[that]
ءَاذَنَ
I gave permission
لَكُمۡ‌ۖ
to you
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, he
لَكَبِيرُكُمُ
(is) your chief
ٱلَّذِى
the one who
عَلَّمَكُمُ
taught you
ٱلسِّحۡرَ‌ۖ
the magic
فَلَأُقَطِّعَنَّ
So surely I will cut off
أَيۡدِيَكُمۡ
your hands
وَأَرۡجُلَكُم
and your feet
مِّنۡ
of
خِلَـٰفٍ
opposite sides
وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ
and surely I will crucify you
فِى
on
جُذُوعِ
(the) trunks
ٱلنَّخۡلِ
(of) date-palms
وَلَتَعۡلَمُنَّ
and surely you will know
أَيُّنَآ
which of us
أَشَدُّ
(is) more severe
عَذَابًا
(in) punishment
وَأَبۡقَىٰ
and more lasting
٧١
[Pharaoh] said, "You believed him [i.e., Moses] before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you on the trunks of palm trees, and you will surely know which of us is more severe in [giving] punishment and more enduring."
20:72
قَالُواۡ
They said
لَن
Never
نُّؤۡثِرَكَ
we will prefer you
عَلَىٰ
over
مَا
what
جَآءَنَا
has come to us
مِنَ
of
ٱلۡبَيِّنَـٰتِ
the clear proofs
وَٱلَّذِى
and the One Who
فَطَرَنَا‌ۖ
created us
فَٱقۡضِ
So decree
مَآ
whatever
أَنتَ
you
قَاضٍ‌ۖ
(are) decreeing
إِنَّمَا
Only
تَقۡضِى
you can decree
هَـٰذِهِ
(for) this
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ
life
ٱلدُّنۡيَآ
(of) the world
٧٢
They said, "Never will we prefer you over what has come to us of clear proofs and [over] He who created us.1 So decree whatever you are to decree. You can only decree for this worldly life.
20:73
إِنَّآ
Indeed, [we]
ءَامَنَّا
we believe
بِرَبِّنَا
in our Lord
لِيَغۡفِرَ
that He may forgive
لَنَا
for us
خَطَـٰيَـٰنَا
our sins
وَمَآ
and what
أَكۡرَهۡتَنَا
you compelled us
عَلَيۡهِ
on it
مِنَ
of
ٱلسِّحۡرِ‌ۗ
the magic
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
خَيۡرٌ
(is) Best
وَأَبۡقَىٰٓ
and Ever Lasting
٧٣
Indeed, we have believed in our Lord that He may forgive us our sins and what you compelled us [to do] of magic. And Allāh is better and more enduring."1
20:74
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, he
مَن
who
يَأۡتِ
comes
رَبَّهُۥ
(to) his Lord
مُجۡرِمًا
(as) a criminal
فَإِنَّ
then indeed
لَهُۥ
for him
جَهَنَّمَ
(is) Hell
لَا
Not
يَمُوتُ
he will die
فِيهَا
in it
وَلَا
and not
يَحۡيَىٰ
live
٧٤
Indeed, whoever comes to his Lord as a criminal - indeed, for him is Hell; he will neither die therein nor live.
20:75
وَمَن
But whoever
يَأۡتِهِۦ
comes to Him
مُؤۡمِنًا
(as) a believer
قَدۡ
verily
عَمِلَ
he has done
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ
the righteous deeds
فَأُوۡلَـٰٓئِكَ
then those
لَهُمُ
for them
ٱلدَّرَجَـٰتُ
(will be) the ranks
ٱلۡعُلَىٰ
[the] high
٧٥
But whoever comes to Him as a believer having done righteous deeds - for those will be the highest degrees [in position]:
20:76
جَنَّـٰتُ
Gardens
عَدۡنٍ
(of) Eden
تَجۡرِى
flows
مِن
from
تَحۡتِهَا
underneath them
ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ
the rivers
خَـٰلِدِينَ
abiding forever
فِيهَا‌ۚ
in it
وَذٰلِكَ
And that
جَزَآءُ
(is) the reward
مَن
(for him) who
تَزَكَّىٰ
purifies himself
٧٦
Gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. And that is the reward of one who purifies himself.1
20:77
وَلَقَدۡ
And verily
أَوۡحَيۡنَآ
We inspired
إِلَىٰ
to
مُوسَىٰٓ
Musa
أَنۡ
that
أَسۡرِ
Travel by night
بِعِبَادِى
with My slaves
فَٱضۡرِبۡ
and strike
لَهُمۡ
for them
طَرِيقًا
a path
فِى
in
ٱلۡبَحۡرِ
the sea
يَبَسًا
dry
لَّا
not
تَخَـٰفُ
fearing
دَرَكًا
to be overtaken
وَلَا
and not
تَخۡشَىٰ
being afraid
٧٧
And We had inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants and strike for them a dry path through the sea; you will not fear being overtaken [by Pharaoh] nor be afraid [of drowning]."
20:78
فَأَتۡبَعَهُمۡ
Then followed them
فِرۡعَوۡنُ
Firaun
بِجُنُودِهِۦ
with his forces
فَغَشِيَهُم
but covered them
مِّنَ
from
ٱلۡيَمِّ
the sea
مَا
what
غَشِيَهُمۡ
covered them
٧٨
So Pharaoh pursued them with his soldiers, and there covered them from the sea that which covered them,1
20:79
وَأَضَلَّ
And led astray
فِرۡعَوۡنُ
Firaun
قَوۡمَهُۥ
his people
وَمَا
and (did) not
هَدَىٰ
guide them
٧٩
And Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide [them].
20:80
يَـٰبَنِىٓ
O Children of Israel
إِسۡرٰٓءِيلَ
O Children of Israel
قَدۡ
Verily
أَنجَيۡنَـٰكُم
We delivered you
مِّنۡ
from
عَدُوِّكُمۡ
your enemy
وَوٰعَدۡنَـٰكُمۡ
and We made a covenant with you
جَانِبَ
on (the) side
ٱلطُّورِ
(of) the Mount
ٱلۡأَيۡمَنَ
the right
وَنَزَّلۡنَا
and We sent down
عَلَيۡكُمُ
to you
ٱلۡمَنَّ
the Manna
وَٱلسَّلۡوَىٰ
and the quails
٨٠
O Children of Israel, We delivered you from your enemy, and We made an appointment with you1 at the right side of the mount, and We sent down to you manna and quails,
20:81
كُلُواۡ
Eat
مِن
of
طَيِّبَـٰتِ
(the) good things
مَا
which
رَزَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ
We have provided you
وَلَا
and (do) not
تَطۡغَوۡاۡ
transgress
فِيهِ
therein
فَيَحِلَّ
lest should descend
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
upon you
غَضَبِى‌ۖ
My Anger
وَمَن
And whoever
يَحۡلِلۡ
on whom descends
عَلَيۡهِ
on whom descends
غَضَبِى
My Anger
فَقَدۡ
indeed
هَوَىٰ
he (has) perished
٨١
[Saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you and do not transgress [or oppress others] therein, lest My anger should descend upon you. And he upon whom My anger descends has certainly fallen [i.e., perished]."
20:82
وَإِنِّى
But indeed, I Am
لَغَفَّارٌ
the Perpetual Forgiver
لِّمَن
of whoever
تَابَ
repents
وَءَامَنَ
and believes
وَعَمِلَ
and does
صَـٰلِحًا
righteous (deeds)
ثُمَّ
then
ٱهۡتَدَىٰ
remains guided
٨٢
But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
20:83
۞وَمَآ
And what
أَعۡجَلَكَ
made you hasten
عَن
from
قَوۡمِكَ
your people
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ
O Musa
٨٣
[Allāh said], "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?"
20:84
قَالَ
He said
هُمۡ
They
أُوۡلَآءِ
(are) close
عَلَىٰٓ
upon
أَثَرِى
my tracks
وَعَجِلۡتُ
and I hastened
إِلَيۡكَ
to you
رَبِّ
my Lord
لِتَرۡضَىٰ
that You be pleased
٨٤
He said, "They are close upon my tracks, and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You be pleased."
20:85
قَالَ
He said
فَإِنَّا
But indeed, We
قَدۡ
[verily]
فَتَنَّا
We (have) tried
قَوۡمَكَ
your people
مِنۢ
after you
بَعۡدِكَ
after you
وَأَضَلَّهُمُ
and has led them astray
ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ
the Samiri
٨٥
[Allāh] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Sāmirī1 has led them astray."
20:86
فَرَجَعَ
Then Musa returned
مُوسَىٰٓ
Then Musa returned
إِلَىٰ
to
قَوۡمِهِۦ
his people
غَضۡبَـٰنَ
angry
أَسِفًا‌ۚ
(and) sorrowful
قَالَ
He said
يَـٰقَوۡمِ
O my people
أَلَمۡ
Did not
يَعِدۡكُمۡ
promise you
رَبُّكُمۡ
your Lord
وَعۡدًا
a promise
حَسَنًا‌ۚ
good
أَفَطَالَ
Then, did seem long
عَلَيۡكُمُ
to you
ٱلۡعَهۡدُ
the promise
أَمۡ
or
أَرَدتُّمۡ
did you desire
أَن
that
يَحِلَّ
descend
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
upon you
غَضَبٌ
(the) Anger
مِّن
of
رَّبِّكُمۡ
your Lord
فَأَخۡلَفۡتُم
so you broke
مَّوۡعِدِى
(the) promise to me
٨٦
So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved.1 He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise?2 Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"
20:87
قَالُواۡ
They said
مَآ
Not
أَخۡلَفۡنَا
we broke
مَوۡعِدَكَ
promise to you
بِمَلۡكِنَا
by our will
وَلَـٰكِنَّا
but we
حُمِّلۡنَآ
[we] were made to carry
أَوۡزَارًا
burdens
مِّن
from
زِينَةِ
ornaments
ٱلۡقَوۡمِ
(of) the people
فَقَذَفۡنَـٰهَا
so we threw them
فَكَذٰلِكَ
and thus
أَلۡقَى
threw
ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ
the Samiri
٨٧
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Sāmirī throw."
20:88
فَأَخۡرَجَ
Then he brought forth
لَهُمۡ
for them
عِجۡلاً
a calf's
جَسَدًا
body
لَّهُۥ
it had
خُوَارٌ
a lowing sound
فَقَالُواۡ
and they said
هَـٰذَآ
This
إِلَـٰهُكُمۡ
(is) your god
وَإِلَـٰهُ
and the god
مُوسَىٰ
(of) Musa
فَنَسِىَ
but he forgot
٨٨
And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot."
20:89
أَفَلَا
Then, did not
يَرَوۡنَ
they see
أَلَّا
that not
يَرۡجِعُ
it (could) return
إِلَيۡهِمۡ
to them
قَوۡلاً
a word
وَلَا
and not
يَمۡلِكُ
possess
لَهُمۡ
for them
ضَرًّا
any harm
وَلَا
and not
نَفۡعًا
any benefit
٨٩
Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech [i.e., response] and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?
20:90
وَلَقَدۡ
And verily
قَالَ
(had) said
لَهُمۡ
to them
هَـٰرُونُ
Harun
مِن
before
قَبۡلُ
before
يَـٰقَوۡمِ
O my people
إِنَّمَا
Only
فُتِنتُم
you are being tested
بِهِۦ‌ۖ
by it
وَإِنَّ
and indeed
رَبَّكُمُ
your Lord
ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ
(is) the Most Gracious
فَٱتَّبِعُونِى
so follow me
وَأَطِيعُوٓاۡ
and obey
أَمۡرِى
my order
٩٠
And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order."
20:91
قَالُواۡ
They said
لَن
Never
نَّبۡرَحَ
we will cease
عَلَيۡهِ
being devoted to it
عَـٰكِفِينَ
being devoted to it
حَتَّىٰ
until
يَرۡجِعَ
returns
إِلَيۡنَا
to us
مُوسَىٰ
Musa
٩١
They said, "We will never cease being devoted to it [i.e., the calf] until Moses returns to us."
20:92
قَالَ
He said
يَـٰهَـٰرُونُ
O Harun
مَا
What
مَنَعَكَ
prevented you
إِذۡ
when
رَأَيۡتَهُمۡ
you saw them
ضَلُّوٓاۡ
going astray
٩٢
[Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray,
20:93
أَلَّا
That not
تَتَّبِعَنِ‌ۖ
you follow me
أَفَعَصَيۡتَ
Then, have you disobeyed
أَمۡرِى
my order
٩٣
From following me? Then have you disobeyed my order?"
20:94
قَالَ
He said
يَبۡنَؤُمَّ
O son of my mother
لَا
(Do) not
تَأۡخُذۡ
seize (me)
بِلِحۡيَتِى
by my beard
وَلَا
and not
بِرَأۡسِىٓ‌ۖ
by my head
إِنِّى
Indeed, I
خَشِيتُ
[I] feared
أَن
that
تَقُولَ
you would say
فَرَّقۡتَ
You caused division
بَيۡنَ
between
بَنِىٓ
(the) Children of Israel
إِسۡرٰٓءِيلَ
(the) Children of Israel
وَلَمۡ
and not
تَرۡقُبۡ
you respect
قَوۡلِى
my word
٩٤
[Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe [or await] my word.'"
20:95
قَالَ
He said
فَمَا
Then what
خَطۡبُكَ
(is) your case
يَـٰسَـٰمِرِىُّ
O Samiri
٩٥
[Moses] said, "And what is your case, O Sāmirī?"
20:96
قَالَ
He said
بَصُرۡتُ
I perceived
بِمَا
what
لَمۡ
not
يَبۡصُرُواۡ
they perceive
بِهِۦ
in it
فَقَبَضۡتُ
so I took
قَبۡضَةً
a handful
مِّنۡ
from
أَثَرِ
(the) track
ٱلرَّسُولِ
(of) the Messenger
فَنَبَذۡتُهَا
then threw it
وَكَذٰلِكَ
and thus
سَوَّلَتۡ
suggested
لِى
to me
نَفۡسِى
my soul
٩٦
He said, "I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful [of dust] from the track of the messenger1 and threw it,2 and thus did my soul entice me."
20:97
قَالَ
He said
فَٱذۡهَبۡ
Then go
فَإِنَّ
And indeed
لَكَ
for you
فِى
in
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ
the life
أَن
that
تَقُولَ
you will say
لَا
(Do) not
مِسَاسَ‌ۖ
touch
وَإِنَّ
And indeed
لَكَ
for you
مَوۡعِدًا
(is) an appointment
لَّن
never
تُخۡلَفَهُۥ‌ۖ
you will fail to (keep) it
وَٱنظُرۡ
And look
إِلَىٰٓ
at
إِلَـٰهِكَ
your god
ٱلَّذِى
that which
ظَلۡتَ
you have remained
عَلَيۡهِ
to it
عَاكِفًا‌ۖ
devoted
لَّنُحَرِّقَنَّهُۥ
Surely we will burn it
ثُمَّ
then
لَنَنسِفَنَّهُۥ
certainly we will scatter it
فِى
in
ٱلۡيَمِّ
the sea
نَسۡفًا
(in) particles
٩٧
[Moses] said, "Then go. And indeed, it is [decreed] for you in [this] life to say, 'No contact.'1 And indeed, you have an appointment [in the Hereafter] you will not fail to keep. And look at your 'god' to which you remained devoted. We will surely burn it and blow it [i.e., its ashes] into the sea with a blast.
20:98
إِنَّمَآ
Only
إِلَـٰهُكُمُ
your God
ٱللَّهُ
(is) Allah
ٱلَّذِى
the One
لَآ
(there is) no
إِلَـٰهَ
god
إِلَّا
but
هُوَ‌ۚ
He
وَسِعَ
He has encompassed
كُلَّ
all
شَىۡءٍ
things
عِلۡمًا
(in) knowledge
٩٨
Your god is only Allāh, except for whom there is no deity. He has encompassed all things in knowledge."
20:99
كَذٰلِكَ
Thus
نَقُصُّ
We relate
عَلَيۡكَ
to you
مِنۡ
from
أَنۢبَآءِ
(the) news
مَا
(of) what
قَدۡ
has preceded
سَبَقَ‌ۚ
has preceded
وَقَدۡ
And certainly
ءَاتَيۡنَـٰكَ
We have given you
مِن
from
لَّدُنَّا
Us
ذِكۡرًا
a Reminder
٩٩
Thus, [O Muḥammad], We relate to you from the news of what has preceded. And We have certainly given you from Us a message [i.e., the Qur’ān].
20:100
مَّنۡ
Whoever
أَعۡرَضَ
turns away
عَنۡهُ
from it
فَإِنَّهُۥ
then indeed, he
يَحۡمِلُ
will bear
يَوۡمَ
(on the) Day
ٱلۡقِيَـٰمَةِ
(of) Resurrection
وِزۡرًا
a burden
١٠٠
Whoever turns away from it - then indeed, he will bear on the Day of Resurrection a burden [i.e., great sin],
20:101
خَـٰلِدِينَ
Abiding forever
فِيهِ‌ۖ
in it
وَسَآءَ
and evil
لَهُمۡ
for them
يَوۡمَ
(on the) Day
ٱلۡقِيَـٰمَةِ
(of) the Resurrection
حِمۡلاً
(as) a load
١٠١
[Abiding] eternally therein,1 and evil it is for them on the Day of Resurrection as a load -
20:102
يَوۡمَ
(The) Day
يُنفَخُ
will be blown
فِى
in
ٱلصُّورِ‌ۚ
the Trumpet
وَنَحۡشُرُ
and We will gather
ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ
the criminals
يَوۡمَئِذٍ
that Day
زُرۡقًا
blue-eyed
١٠٢
The Day the Horn will be blown. And We will gather the criminals, that Day, blue-eyed.1
20:103
يَتَخَـٰفَتُونَ
They are murmuring
بَيۡنَهُمۡ
among themselves
إِن
Not
لَّبِثۡتُمۡ
you remained
إِلَّا
except (for)
عَشۡرًا
ten
١٠٣
They will murmur among themselves, "You remained not but ten [days in the world]."
20:104
نَّحۡنُ
We
أَعۡلَمُ
know best
بِمَا
what
يَقُولُونَ
they will say
إِذۡ
when
يَقُولُ
will say
أَمۡثَلُهُمۡ
(the) best of them
طَرِيقَةً
(in) conduct
إِن
Not
لَّبِثۡتُمۡ
you remained
إِلَّا
except (for)
يَوۡمًا
a day
١٠٤
We are most knowing of what they say when the best of them in manner [i.e., wisdom or speech] will say, "You remained not but one day."
20:105
وَيَسۡــَٔلُونَكَ
And they ask you
عَنِ
about
ٱلۡجِبَالِ
the mountains
فَقُلۡ
so say
يَنسِفُهَا
Will blast them
رَبِّى
my Lord
نَسۡفًا
(into) particles
١٠٥
And they ask you about the mountains, so say, "My Lord will blow them away with a blast.1
20:106
فَيَذَرُهَا
Then He will leave it
قَاعًا
a level
صَفۡصَفًا
plain
١٠٦
And He will leave it [i.e., the earth] a level plain;
20:107
لَّا
Not
تَرَىٰ
you will see
فِيهَا
in it
عِوَجًا
any crookedness
وَلَآ
and not
أَمۡتًا
any curve
١٠٧
You will not see therein a depression or an elevation."
20:108
يَوۡمَئِذٍ
On that Day
يَتَّبِعُونَ
they will follow
ٱلدَّاعِىَ
the caller
لَا
no
عِوَجَ
deviation
لَهُۥ‌ۖ
from it
وَخَشَعَتِ
And (will be) humbled
ٱلۡأَصۡوَاتُ
the voices
لِلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ
for the Most Gracious
فَلَا
so not
تَسۡمَعُ
you will hear
إِلَّا
except
هَمۡسًا
a faint sound
١٠٨
That Day, they [i.e., everyone] will follow [the call of] the Caller1 [with] no deviation therefrom, and [all] voices will be stilled before the Most Merciful, so you will not hear except a whisper [of footsteps].
20:109
يَوۡمَئِذٍ
(On) that Day
لَّا
not
تَنفَعُ
will benefit
ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةُ
the intercession
إِلَّا
except
مَنۡ
(to) whom
أَذِنَ
has given permission
لَهُ
[to him]
ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ
the Most Gracious
وَرَضِىَ
and He has accepted
لَهُۥ
for him
قَوۡلاً
a word
١٠٩
That Day, no intercession will benefit except [that of] one to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and has accepted his word.
20:110
يَعۡلَمُ
He knows
مَا
what
بَيۡنَ
(is) before them
أَيۡدِيهِمۡ
(is) before them
وَمَا
and what
خَلۡفَهُمۡ
(is) behind them
وَلَا
while not
يُحِيطُونَ
they encompass
بِهِۦ
it
عِلۡمًا
(in) knowledge
١١٠
He [i.e., Allāh] knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them,1 but they do not encompass it [i.e., what He knows] in knowledge.
20:111
۞وَعَنَتِ
And (will be) humbled
ٱلۡوُجُوهُ
the faces
لِلۡحَىِّ
before the Ever-Living
ٱلۡقَيُّومِ‌ۖ
the Self-Subsisting
وَقَدۡ
And verily
خَابَ
will have failed
مَنۡ
(he) who
حَمَلَ
carried
ظُلۡمًا
wrongdoing
١١١
And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining.1 And he will have failed who carries injustice.2
20:112
وَمَن
But (he) who
يَعۡمَلۡ
does
مِنَ
of
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ
the righteous deeds
وَهُوَ
while he
مُؤۡمِنٌ
(is) a believer
فَلَا
then not
يَخَافُ
he will fear
ظُلۡمًا
injustice
وَلَا
and not
هَضۡمًا
deprivation
١١٢
But he who does of righteous deeds while he is a believer - he will neither fear injustice nor deprivation.
20:113
وَكَذٰلِكَ
And thus
أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ
We have sent it down
قُرۡءَانًا
(the) Quran
عَرَبِيًّا
(in) Arabic
وَصَرَّفۡنَا
and We have explained
فِيهِ
in it
مِنَ
of
ٱلۡوَعِيدِ
the warnings
لَعَلَّهُمۡ
that they may
يَتَّقُونَ
fear
أَوۡ
or
يُحۡدِثُ
it may cause
لَهُمۡ
[for] them
ذِكۡرًا
remembrance
١١٣
And thus We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’ān1 and have diversified therein the warnings that perhaps they will avoid [sin] or it would cause them remembrance.
20:114
فَتَعَـٰلَى
So high (above all)
ٱللَّهُ
(is) Allah
ٱلۡمَلِكُ
the King
ٱلۡحَقُّ‌ۗ
the True
وَلَا
And (do) not
تَعۡجَلۡ
hasten
بِٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ
with the Quran
مِن
before
قَبۡلِ
before
أَن
[that]
يُقۡضَىٰٓ
is completed
إِلَيۡكَ
to you
وَحۡيُهُۥ‌ۖ
its revelation
وَقُل
and say
رَّبِّ
My Lord
زِدۡنِى
Increase me
عِلۡمًا
(in) knowledge
١١٤
So high [above all] is Allāh, the Sovereign,1 the Truth.2 And, [O Muḥammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur’ān before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
20:115
وَلَقَدۡ
And verily
عَهِدۡنَآ
We made a covenant
إِلَىٰٓ
with
ءَادَمَ
Adam
مِن
before
قَبۡلُ
before
فَنَسِىَ
but he forgot
وَلَمۡ
and not
نَجِدۡ
We found
لَهُۥ
in him
عَزۡمًا
determination
١١٥
And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.1
20:116
وَإِذۡ
And when
قُلۡنَا
We said
لِلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ
to the Angels
ٱسۡجُدُواۡ
Prostrate
لِأَدَمَ
to Adam
فَسَجَدُوٓاۡ
then they prostrated
إِلَّآ
except
إِبۡلِيسَ
Iblis
أَبَىٰ
he refused
١١٦
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except Iblees;1 he refused.
20:117
فَقُلۡنَا
Then We said
يَـٰٓــَٔـادَمُ
O Adam
إِنَّ
Indeed
هَـٰذَا
this
عَدُوٌّ
(is) an enemy
لَّكَ
to you
وَلِزَوۡجِكَ
and to your wife
فَلَا
So not
يُخۡرِجَنَّكُمَا
(let) him drive you both
مِنَ
from
ٱلۡجَنَّةِ
Paradise
فَتَشۡقَىٰٓ
so (that) you would suffer
١١٧
So We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer.
20:118
إِنَّ
Indeed
لَكَ
for you
أَلَّا
that not
تَجُوعَ
you will be hungry
فِيهَا
therein
وَلَا
and not
تَعۡرَىٰ
you will be unclothed
١١٨
Indeed, it is [promised] for you not to be hungry therein or be unclothed.
20:119
وَأَنَّكَ
And that you
لَا
not
تَظۡمَؤُاۡ
will suffer from thirst
فِيهَا
therein
وَلَا
and not
تَضۡحَىٰ
exposed to the sun's heat
١١٩
And indeed, you will not be thirsty therein or be hot from the sun."
20:120
فَوَسۡوَسَ
Then whispered
إِلَيۡهِ
to him
ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنُ
Shaitaan
قَالَ
he said
يَـٰٓــَٔـادَمُ
O Adam
هَلۡ
Shall
أَدُلُّكَ
I direct you
عَلَىٰ
to
شَجَرَةِ
(the) tree
ٱلۡخُلۡدِ
(of) the Eternity
وَمُلۡكٍ
and a kingdom
لَّا
not
يَبۡلَىٰ
(that will) deteriorate
١٢٠
Then Satan whispered to him; he said, "O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?"
20:121
فَأَكَلَا
Then they both ate
مِنۡهَا
from it
فَبَدَتۡ
so became apparent
لَهُمَا
to them
سَوۡءٰتُهُمَا
their shame
وَطَفِقَا
and they began
يَخۡصِفَانِ
(to) fasten
عَلَيۡهِمَا
on themselves
مِن
from
وَرَقِ
(the) leaves
ٱلۡجَنَّةِ‌ۚ
(of) Paradise
وَعَصَىٰٓ
And Adam disobeyed
ءَادَمُ
And Adam disobeyed
رَبَّهُۥ
his Lord
فَغَوَىٰ
and erred
١٢١
And they [i.e., Adam and his wife] ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred.
20:122
ثُمَّ
Then
ٱجۡتَبَـٰهُ
chose him
رَبُّهُۥ
his Lord
فَتَابَ
and turned
عَلَيۡهِ
to him
وَهَدَىٰ
and guided (him)
١٢٢
Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him].
20:123
قَالَ
He said
ٱهۡبِطَا
Go down
مِنۡهَا
from it
جَمِيعَۢا‌ۖ
all
بَعۡضُكُمۡ
some of you
لِبَعۡضٍ
to others
عَدُوٌّ‌ۖ
(as) enemy
فَإِمَّا
Then if
يَأۡتِيَنَّكُم
comes to you
مِّنِّى
from Me
هُدًى
guidance
فَمَنِ
then whoever
ٱتَّبَعَ
follows
هُدَاىَ
My guidance
فَلَا
then not
يَضِلُّ
he will go astray
وَلَا
and not
يَشۡقَىٰ
suffer
١٢٣
[Allāh] said, "Descend from it [i.e., Paradise] - all, [your descendants] being enemies to one another. And if there should come to you guidance from Me - then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in the world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter].
20:124
وَمَنۡ
And whoever
أَعۡرَضَ
turns away
عَن
from
ذِكۡرِى
My remembrance
فَإِنَّ
then indeed
لَهُۥ
for him
مَعِيشَةً
(is) a life
ضَنكًا
straitened
وَنَحۡشُرُهُۥ
and We will gather him
يَوۡمَ
(on the) Day
ٱلۡقِيَـٰمَةِ
(of) the Resurrection
أَعۡمَىٰ
blind
١٢٤
And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather [i.e., raise] him on the Day of Resurrection blind."
20:125
قَالَ
He will say
رَبِّ
My Lord
لِمَ
Why
حَشَرۡتَنِىٓ
You raised me
أَعۡمَىٰ
blind
وَقَدۡ
while [verily]
كُنتُ
I had
بَصِيرًا
sight
١٢٥
He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?"
20:126
قَالَ
He will say
كَذٰلِكَ
Thus
أَتَتۡكَ
came to you
ءَايَـٰتُنَا
Our Signs
فَنَسِيتَهَا‌ۖ
but you forgot them
وَكَذٰلِكَ
and thus
ٱلۡيَوۡمَ
today
تُنسَىٰ
you will be forgotten
١٢٦
[Allāh] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot [i.e., disregarded] them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."
20:127
وَكَذٰلِكَ
And thus
نَجۡزِى
We recompense
مَنۡ
(he) who
أَسۡرَفَ
transgresses
وَلَمۡ
and not
يُؤۡمِنۢ
believes
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِ
in (the) Signs
رَبِّهِۦ‌ۚ
(of) his Lord
وَلَعَذَابُ
And surely (the) punishment
ٱلۡأَخِرَةِ
(of) the Hereafter
أَشَدُّ
(is) more severe
وَأَبۡقَىٰٓ
and more lasting
١٢٧
And thus do We recompense he who transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.1
20:128
أَفَلَمۡ
Then has not
يَهۡدِ
it guided
لَهُمۡ
[for] them
كَمۡ
how many
أَهۡلَكۡنَا
We (have) destroyed
قَبۡلَهُم
before them
مِّنَ
of
ٱلۡقُرُونِ
the generations
يَمۡشُونَ
(as) they walk
فِى
in
مَسَـٰكِنِهِمۡ‌ۗ
their dwellings
إِنَّ
Indeed
فِى
in
ذٰلِكَ
that
لَأَيَـٰتٍ
surely (are) Signs
لِّأُوۡلِى
for possessors
ٱلنُّهَىٰ
(of) intelligence
١٢٨
Then, has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.
20:129
وَلَوۡلَا
And if not
كَلِمَةٌ
(for) a Word
سَبَقَتۡ
(that) preceded
مِن
from
رَّبِّكَ
your Lord
لَكَانَ
surely (would) have been
لِزَامًا
an obligation
وَأَجَلٌ
and a term
مُّسَمًّى
determined
١٢٩
And if not for a word1 that preceded from your Lord, it [i.e., punishment] would have been an obligation [due immediately],2 and [if not for] a specified term [decreed].
20:130
فَٱصۡبِرۡ
So be patient
عَلَىٰ
over
مَا
what
يَقُولُونَ
they say
وَسَبِّحۡ
and glorify
بِحَمۡدِ
with praise
رَبِّكَ
(of) your Lord
قَبۡلَ
before
طُلُوعِ
(the) rising
ٱلشَّمۡسِ
(of) the sun
وَقَبۡلَ
and before
غُرُوبِهَا‌ۖ
its setting
وَمِنۡ
and from
ءَانَآىِٕ
(the) hours
ٱلَّيۡلِ
(of) the night
فَسَبِّحۡ
and glorify
وَأَطۡرَافَ
(at the) ends
ٱلنَّهَارِ
(of) the day
لَعَلَّكَ
so that you may
تَرۡضَىٰ
be satisfied
١٣٠
So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.
20:131
وَلَا
And (do) not
تَمُدَّنَّ
extend
عَيۡنَيۡكَ
your eyes
إِلَىٰ
towards
مَا
what
مَتَّعۡنَا
We have given for enjoyment
بِهِۦٓ
[with it]
أَزۡوٰجًا
pairs
مِّنۡهُمۡ
of them
زَهۡرَةَ
(the) splendor
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ
(of) the life
ٱلدُّنۡيَا
(of) the world
لِنَفۡتِنَهُمۡ
that We may test them
فِيهِ‌ۚ
in it
وَرِزۡقُ
And (the) provision
رَبِّكَ
(of) your Lord
خَيۡرٌ
(is) better
وَأَبۡقَىٰ
and more lasting
١٣١
And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.
20:132
وَأۡمُرۡ
And enjoin
أَهۡلَكَ
(on) your family
بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ
the prayer
وَٱصۡطَبِرۡ
and be steadfast
عَلَيۡهَا‌ۖ
therein
لَا
Not
نَسۡــَٔلُكَ
We ask you
رِزۡقًا‌ۖ
(for) provision
نَّحۡنُ
We
نَرۡزُقُكَ‌ۗ
provide (for) you
وَٱلۡعَـٰقِبَةُ
and the outcome
لِلتَّقۡوَىٰ
(is) for the righteous[ness]
١٣٢
And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.
20:133
وَقَالُواۡ
And they say
لَوۡلَا
Why not
يَأۡتِينَا
he brings us
بِـَٔـايَةٍ
a sign
مِّن
from
رَّبِّهِۦٓ‌ۚ
his Lord
أَوَلَمۡ
Has not
تَأۡتِهِم
come to them
بَيِّنَةُ
evidence
مَا
(of) what
فِى
(was) in
ٱلصُّحُفِ
the Scriptures
ٱلۡأُولَىٰ
the former
١٣٣
And they say, "Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?" Has there not come to them evidence of what was in the former scriptures?1
20:134
وَلَوۡ
And if
أَنَّآ
We
أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُم
(had) destroyed them
بِعَذَابٍ
with a punishment
مِّن
before him
قَبۡلِهِۦ
before him
لَقَالُواۡ
surely they (would) have said
رَبَّنَا
Our Lord
لَوۡلَآ
why not
أَرۡسَلۡتَ
You sent
إِلَيۡنَا
to us
رَسُولاً
a Messenger
فَنَتَّبِعَ
so we (could) have followed
ءَايَـٰتِكَ
Your signs
مِن
before
قَبۡلِ
before
أَن
[that]
نَّذِلَّ
we were humiliated
وَنَخۡزَىٰ
and disgraced
١٣٤
And if We had destroyed them with a punishment before him,1 they would have said, "Our Lord, why did You not send to us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses [i.e., teachings] before we were humiliated and disgraced?"
20:135
قُلۡ
Say
كُلٌّ
Each
مُّتَرَبِّصٌ
(is) waiting
فَتَرَبَّصُواۡ‌ۖ
so await
فَسَتَعۡلَمُونَ
Then you will know
مَنۡ
who
أَصۡحَـٰبُ
(are the) companions
ٱلصِّرٰطِ
(of) the way
ٱلسَّوِىِّ
[the] even
وَمَنِ
and who
ٱهۡتَدَىٰ
is guided
١٣٥
Say, "Each [of us] is waiting;1 so wait. For you will know who are the companions of the sound path and who is guided."
