he turned his back
يَسۡعَىٰ

Then he turned his back, striving [i.e., plotting].1
79:23
فَحَشَرَ
And he gathered
فَنَادَىٰ
٢٣and called out
And he gathered [his people] and called out.
79:24
فَقَالَ
Then he said
أَنَاۡ
I am
رَبُّكُمُ
your Lord
the Most High
And said, "I am your most exalted lord."

فَأَخَذَهُ
So seized him
Allah
نَكَالَ
(with) an exemplary punishment
(for) the last
وَٱ لۡأُولَىٰٓ
٢٥and the first
So Allāh seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first [transgression].1.

إِنّ َ
Indeed

in
ذٰ لِكَ
that

surely (is) a lesson
for whoever
fears
Indeed in that is a lesson [i.e., warning] for whoever would fear [Allāh].
79:27

Are you

٢٧He constructed it
Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? He [i.e., Allāh] constructed it.

رَفَعَ
He raised
سَمۡكَهَا
its ceiling
فَسَوَّٮٰ هَا
٢٨and proportioned it
He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.
79:29
وَأَغۡطَشَ
And He darkened
لَيۡلَهَا
its night
وَأَخۡرَجَ
and brought out
ضُحَـٰ هَا
٢٩its brightness
And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness.1
79:30
وَٱ لۡأَرۡضَ
And the earth
بَعۡدَ
after
ذٰ لِكَ
that
دَحَـٰ هَآ
٣٠He spread it
And after that He spread the earth.
79:31
أَخۡرَجَ
He brought forth
مِنۡهَا
from it
مَا ٓءَهَا
its water
وَمَرۡعَـٰ هَا
٣١and its pasture
He extracted from it its water and its pasture,
79:32
وَٱ لۡجِبَالَ
And the mountains
أَرۡسَـٰ هَا
٣٢He made them firm
And the mountains He set firmly
79:33
مَتَـٰ عًا
(As) a provision
for you
وَلِأَنۡعَـٰ مِكُمۡ
٣٣and for your cattle
As enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.
79:34
فَإِذَا
But when

comes
the Overwhelming Calamity
the great
But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity1 -

will remember
man
مَا
what
سَعَىٰ
٣٥he strove (for)
The Day when man will remember that for which he strove,

وَبُرِّزَتِ
And will be made manifest
the Hellfire
لِمَن
to (him) who
sees
And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see -
79:37
فَأَمّ َا
Then as for
مَن
(him) who
transgressed
So as for he who transgressed
79:38
وَءَاثَرَ
And preferred
the life
(of) the world
And preferred the life of the world,
79:39
فَإِنّ َ
Then indeed
the Hellfire
هِىَ
it
(is) the refuge
Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge.
79:40
وَأَمّ َا
But as for
مَنۡ
(him) who
خَافَ
feared
مَقَامَ
standing
رَبِّهِۦ
(before) his Lord
وَنَهَى
and restrained
his soul
عَنِ
from
the vain desires
But as for he who feared the position of his Lord1 and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination,
79:41
فَإِنّ َ
Then indeed
Paradise
هِىَ
it (is)
the refuge
Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.
